I really do appreciate the avatar rewards (got the ODST helmet & helmet/suit combo, a sweet Monitor accessory, and a Halo hoodie, which I would "wear" if it didn't feature a T-shirt with a big heart in the middle...), and hope more games manufacturers start giving us retroactive freebies tied to achievements. Looking forward to the free videos, too.
I'm Level 32 -- can anyone who hit Level 40 tell me if they ever give you an actual suit of Spartan armor and/or helmet, instead of just the ODST stuff?
@Communist Pope: I'm 39 and am 15 points away from 40... I've got nearly all the achievements in Halo Wars to get, which I should get some this weekend.
Hit me up here or Sup3r T0ngue on XBL. I've got all the achievements in Halo 3 and am missing two in ODST. Too bad there's nothing for a perfect 1750... #halowaypoint
@SuperTongue: Nice. I really should pick up Halo Wars. I'm not a big fan of RTS but I love me some Halo and a lot of the achievements on that game sound fun.
But as far as nothing for a perfect 1750: don't you get the holy Recon grail for that? #halowaypoint
@Communist Pope: From what I've seen, your level has nothing to do with any avatar awards. It might at some point in the future, but for now the rewards are locked into achievements from Halo 3: ODST. #halowaypoint
Edit: By the way, I am level 40...I was surprised when I loaded it up and saw that. I was never a huge fan of Halo, yet I am at the max level. The only reason that I'm so high a level is because I'm a completionist and try to get as many achievements in 360 games that I play.
@Communist Pope: I'm at 40, and you don't get anything there- Awards are tied to specific achievements, not gamerscore or level. In fact, 40 stops about 250 points below 100% (?). Plus, recon is tied to the Vidmaster achievements. Get all 7 of those across H3 and ODST, and you automatically unlock recon.
Also, full Halo: Legends - Babysitter stream tomorrow on Waypoint, so that'll be awesome. They're apparently 4 of the shorts for 24 hours every other Saturday starting tomorrow. #halowaypoint
@CanaryWundaboy: That darn general achievement is the only thing keeping me from being perfect across them all. I'm only at about 52,000 experience points and you need 2.4million, so yeah, that's gonna take a LOT of time. #halowaypoint
I booted it up last night. Saw everything in a total of 5 minutes and turned it off. Forgot about it until I saw this post. Nothing to see here folks. Keep moving. #halowaypoint
I kinda dig it. It's a bit cluttered in the 'achievements' section but overall it has potential. I'd like to see some sort of 'channel' for film clips people have made from Halo 3 MP, even if it's only 'Bungie Pro' subscribers. Just something to connect that community a bit more.
The thing I like most is that now my avatar can wear an ODST helmet with a blue suit and bowtie. DREAMS REALLY CAN COME TRUE! #halowaypoint
@hot_heart: I wish they'd made the ODST suit come without the helmet. Then you could have the seperate helmet on or off, or use the Recon helmet. #halowaypoint
This is the kind of stuff that makes Halo a great franchise, I'm not a huge fan of Halo but the support it gets is amazing, I would love something like this for Modern Warfare. Just a great sense of community and life behind the game that makes you feel like a part of something more than just playing a game, you're part of a family of sorts. #halowaypoint
@DRM.HollyWood: Maybe I'm cynical, but all I see with Halo Waypoint is a way to promote their shiny new game, their anime, and their new books. At first glance, I didn't see any way to interact with other people through Waypoint, though I'll admit I wasn't in the channel for more than five minutes.
But on the plus side, the Star Wars style floating droid thingy I got for my avatar when I installed it and looked around was pretty cool. #halowaypoint
@DRM.HollyWood:
Modern Warfare's characters were too one dimensional. They hardly spend time to develop them. Hopefully they addressed that in MW2 but I doubt it. #halowaypoint
@DigitalHero: I can agree with that completely, the campaign in Modern Warfare was a great shooter but story wise held no emotional weight in my opinion. Although a majority of my play through of Halo 3 was mainly to get my Samurai sword I still felt like the universe of Halo was a breathing entity and I was a part of it. Anyway Half Life 2 and the two following episodes have set my expectations for what a game can be in terms of emotional weight and I don't see anything passing that up in the near future, at least in the genre that I focus on (FPS) #halowaypoint
I would've bought this even if they didn't have Eric Nylund contributing. But since they do, I'm going to buy an extra copy for the bathroom now. :P #haloevolutions
Essential Christmas present for me! I adore anything with Karen Traviss' name on it, and as a big fan of the whole universe of lore the Halo novels have created, this sounds really good.
I can't wait to read that story about the Elites post Halo 3... ooh ooh ooh! And more of the ship to ship combat! I loved that in the Halo novels, it always reminded me of a sort of Star Trek-esque/Old naval battle sort of fighting. *squees*
.. I think i'll stop gushing my halo-fanboyishness now.
Haha, "green suit of armor with a guy inside of it". It's funny because that's pretty much the most effective way to talk about Master Chief in the first place; in the games at least, that dude barely even registers as a person.
As for this book, it seems like it's essentially "Tales from the Empire" or "Tales of the Jedi" from back in the '90s when people actually bought Star Wars short story collections. #haloevolutions
@Archaotic: Ah ha, I remember when i was a kid, and every time I went to the local library i'd take out Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina and Tales of the Bounty Hunters. I loved those books!
They tried to do it more recently with Death Star, but although I really like it, it just doesn't compare to the nostalgia factor of the Tales anthologies. #haloevolutions
@Archaotic:
"in the games at least, that dude barely even registers as a person."
There is a little humanity. Chief jokes with Cortana on multiple occassions in the games. Given the process that it took to make him a Spartan, it's no wonder he is the way he is.
Less time talking is more time for ass whooping. #haloevolutions
I just can't understand that Mike Resnick did novelisation for Tomb raider (!) and was not part of this... Such a waste. I don't know if covenants get married, but the masterchief would definitely make a great widowmaker. #haloevolutions
Sorry... but this is not right. Halo is selling really well, but this is not right. The only ones who is buying this franchise are americans. Microsoft just want money... Halo Legends they bought best studios to make them anime.
Halo is the most overated game there with weak sci-fi story... It brings nothing new, but microsoft trying to make from it a huge hit. What makes MS PR could not do even Sony with their franchises.
This franchise must not die, but one day it must be shut down or people must realise that there are much better games then this. If it is selling well it is not saying that the game is the best of the best.
@Golgari: If you think every game has to bring something new to be good then you'd miss tons of the best games there is. Chrono trigger brought nothing new, ocarina of time didn't, gears didn't, FF didn't (not always anyway).
Halo had good gameplay and that's all it needed. it's sad you can't appreciate it but your tired rant makes you just seem like an MS hater especially since you brought Sony into it.
I don't get it. I just don't get it... Halo is bombarded by gamers for being over advertised, for being the "whore" of Microsoft. Some people can't STAND the franchise because of the popularity. They spew hate at anyone who mentions how great it was for the industry, which by all means, it's excellent for the industry they love.
These are the same people who worship Miyomoto and Mario. Nothing against Miyomoto or Mario, but there is no difference between what Microsoft does with Master Chief and Halo, then what Nintendo does with Mario. Blankets, energy drinks, hot topic tee shirts, etc. Both series gets them, yet it's Halo that is hated for it. This boggles my mind.
Both series are wonderful games, perfect for the industry we all love, yet I just can't wrap my head around why people bring on so much hate for a video game based on it's popularity. Unfortunately, most people that do hate it, hate it because it's popular. How else would the game sell as much as it did? I guess we're all so jaded that we hate anything that isn't obscure or unpopular. It's unfortunate, really, it would make Kotaku a better place if people would just calm down and stop the hate.
@DeadHex - Now on XBL/PSN: It's the internet. People aren't always going to agree. I'm just boggled by the fact that people feel like they have to hate on games. I don't hate any game unless it's something garbage like Superman 64 and even then, it's not hate. It's not as intense as the fanboyism that goes on.
It is very unfortunate that the gaming community will never come together because of Haters and Fans alike.
But if we really sit and think about it, all these children spewing their hate really don't mean anything.
There are still thousands of millions of gamers out there who play it, so it's not like the community will die off. Also the reviewers & gamers in the industry don't act like rotten kids and keep the successful franchises kicking.
