Hooray! Kotaku Purchases GameCakes.Com

It's a wonderful day in the history of video game cakes! Back at GDC 07 when I first approached Crecente about my idea for an all video game cake website, he told me that it was a great concept, and that it was destined for great things. Now, a year and a month later, GameCakes.com proudly becomes a wholly-owned member of the loving Kotaku family. I'm so excited! I never thought when I first started the website that things would skyrocket like they did.

From here on out, GameCakes' unique coverage of all things interactively epicurious well be bolstered by Kotaku's in-depth, up to date coverage of the video game cake scene, backed by their industry clout and trademark wit and charm.

Rejoice, for a new age of gaming cakes is upon us!

Crap, Kotaku Purchases GameCakes.com [GameCakes.Com]

I Hunger... For This Fabulous Sinistar Cake!

Seems we're back on the cake(s). This one, a remarkable achievement unearthed (read: re-blogged) by the eagle-eyed gang at Arcade Heroes, was created for a Killer List of Video Games message board poster and presumed Sinistar fan by a co-worker. We can only assume that by "co-worker", the poster means "best friend in the universe" and "the only one who understands my true passion." It's really quite glorious in it's full-sized form, but remember that there are only about three Sinistar jokes one can make and I've already made one of them. Comment carefully!

Happy Birthday PS3, The Cake

While we're still a day away from the PlayStation 3's first birthday, Sony is already sending out some cakes to celebrate. This particular sugary concoction didn't go to us, but here's what recipient Russell Heimlich had to say.

Sony sent our office a birthday cake celebrating the 1 year anniversary of the PS3. The picture is one of those sugar print outs. The cake tastes a bit sour kind of like the price of this outrageous gaming machine.

Not Another Nintendo Mini-Cake Collection!

Things tend to get a little hairy on NPD sales data day, which, by the way, is not over yet. Media Create sales are due any minute now, so we'll see precisely how well Sony performed with its new 40GB edition of the PlayStation 3 and we expect comments from The Big 3 within the hour. Given all that, Super Mario Bros. cupcakes, specifically, would be a nice break right about now. Something short, sweet, pick up and eat, with that thick leathery frosting might cleanse the palette of bitter fanboy tears.

More detailed pics of these fine pastries at the Flickr photostream.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Caker

What hath a new video game cake post wrought? A flood of new video game cake submissions! While I certainly don't plan on making a habit of publishing daily posts on nerdy wedding desserts (or fashioning awful pun headlines), someone's gone ahead and done something awesome again, forcing my hand to set this post to "Publish" status. Reader Ash and her husband had this fantastic The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker cake made for their wedding day, writing that "this was the one way we could really express ourselves in the wedding without making parents go crazy." Full shots after the jump. More »

The Zelda Vodka Luge (And Um... Mario Wedding Cake)

We're well aware of the fact that some of our readers are so humorless, so singularly focused on complaining between bouts of waiting to die, that the posting of kitschy video game cakes makes their blood boil. But, when someone delivers frosted awesome into our tips inbox, giving us a view into their wedding day baked goods, we're just pleased as punch. Take, for example, newlywed Cory of Blizzard Entertainment who had this gorgeous cake designed to commemorate the last day of his bachelorhood featuring a three-tiered Super Mario Bros. stack of deliciousness.

Not quite sure why the underwater level is hovering over world 1-1... but who are we to nitpick something this tasty and gorgeous?

While cake may genuinely be my favorite thing to ingest, alcohol may come a close second. That's why I was doubly impressed to see the wedding's ice luge.

Martha Stewart Wii Cake Made By Human

Ah, yes. The Martha Stewart Wii cake. Not exactly something easy to make! But Flickr user rufus50 did just that: he actually made one, writing:

My attempt at a Nintendo Wii cake and you can eat it Martha Stewart

Yes, she probably could.

Martha's Wii Cake - The Recipe

Crecente was completely right about the Wired Martha Stewart Wii cake. My head did explode, and once I got around to shoveling the various bits back inside of my skull I immediately started searching for the recipe for this wonder of wonders. Then I got sidetracked by something shiny and forgot about it completely until Kotakuite Chilly directed me to the New York Post of all places, which has posted the recipe in its exhaustive entirety courtesy of Lesli Heffler of the Sono Baking Company and Café. The recipe isn't easy, and it certainly won't be cheap. The cake portion alone requires a recipe for two 8x2 inch cakes multiplied roughly 24 times. That's over 72 cups of flour, 48 cups of sugar, and 144 ounces of butter. The only thing more staggering than the list of ingredients is the sheer amount of effort needed for the massive undertaking, which is why you won't see me making one of these any time soon. Remember kids, glory doesn't come cheap.

The Jello Jiggly DS

Cakes schmakes. The next big thing? J-e-l-l-o. Some dude's wife made this pastel jelly DS. Nothing says "yum" like paste! Over at Monroeworld Forums, that dude writes:

I say she almost nailed the exact thickness of the Lite, do you agree?

Yes, yes I do. Right below the Jello post, another forum member wrote, "Send it into Kotaku.com they always like showing game based cakes and deserts." Kotaku.com, your source for gaming cakes, jello deserts and other things that rot your teeth. *Sigh*

Vault Boy The Game Cake

Luke spoke of this feeling once. Sure, you can look at pictures of game cakes all day long and feel slightly impressed, but nothing compares to seeing one in the sweet, cakey flesh.

The big cake is called the Bloody Mess cake, and features happy-go-lucky mascot Vault Boy shooting another Vault Boy in the head. YAY! Accompanying this masterpiece were two slightly more mundane cakes, which we were allowed to eat.

The assembled press at the after presser party in Washington DC were in awe of the magnificent creation, which Bethesda's VP of PR and Marketing Pete Hines said was inspired by the Food Network's Ace of Cakes as well as Gamecakes.com. One attending press member was so enraptured they were heard to exclaim, "I want to taste Vault Boy in my mouth." Now that's love right there.

Goomba Cake

Reader Mario P. sent in pictures of this Goomba cake his girlfriend made for him the other day. While not reaching the heights seen in some of our technically brilliant game cakes, Mario notes that she made it "for no reason at all!", so I have to give credit for some on-the-fly artistic impulses.

Mumbai's Gears of War Cake

For a while, it seemed like we were posting game cakes every damn day. It actually got so bad that I begged for a game cake ban. Didn't happen, but eventually, the game cakes kinda petered out. We haven't posted a cake in a while, so here goes... More »

Clip: Wii Music Mod

Super awesome crafty deliciousness that doesn't involve cakes! Let's just get off the sugary snacks for a second. We're mature adults, we don't just lie around eating cake and playing video games (...on weekdays). We're creative people, we also do amazing things WITH our video games. More »

The Cactuar Cake

Kotakuite Shaunomacx's girlfriend loves Cactuars. According to him, she eats, drinks and sleeps Cactuars. So, for her birthday, Shaunomacx made her this terrific Cactuar cake! These little anthropomorphic cacti have made an appearance in every Final Fantasy game in one form or another since Final Fantasy VI, so my guess is that the girlfriend is probably also a big Final Fantasy fan. As Shaunomacx succinctly put it in his email, More »

More Damn Cakes

Okay people, apparently we are going a bit cake crazy as of late. I am scared to open my inbox for fear of cake spilling out all over the place, making me spend hours scraping frosting off of press releases and screenshots. Take this one, for instance, from Kotakuite Adam's wedding rehearsal dinner. More »

Let Them Eat Game Cakes

In a world of DIY everything and the rise of The Food Network, everyone is jumping on the cooking bandwagon. In the last year or so, game themed cakes have been all the rage and we've seen some really incredible ones like the Mario Brothers wedding cake which pretty much puts all other game cakes to shame.
