Koji Kondo created an earworm of epic proportions when he wrote the theme music for Super Mario Brothers more than 20 years ago. The tune's become one of the most recognizable pop culture jingles of the last 40 years, to the point where tropical birds feel the need to sing it out loud. Concept artist Larry Quach made the Batcave image I used for a piece on Arkham City's upcoming challenge maps DLC. But that's not the only video game-related creativity that the California resident's whipped up. Quach gave a total visual design treatment to the wedding of two friends, with invitations, a seating chart and a take-home mystery box complete with gold (chocolate) coins. Quach had only one other person helping him make all of this elaborate paper art, so his accomplishment's even more admirable. Truly one for the annals of video game wedding history. More »

That bizarre Mario vs. PETA kerfuffle's fading into the rear view but that's not stopping Taiwanese media outfit Next Media Animation from giving us their askew take on the dust-up. Looking at their oddly-shaped version of Mario is enough to give a person nightmares. Those long legs—brrrr!—-and giant feet are bad enough but the crazy eyes Next Media Animation gives Princess Peach's sweetums will haunt anyone who looks upon them. It's not been uncommon to see Mario given the ultra-violent treatment, as in The Brothers Mario. But, something about the exploding turtles and fireballs lobbed at nearly naked protestors by Mario doppelgangers gives this video an extra bit of WTF. More »

Mario's coming to a handheld in an all-new game. That's always cause for celebration and Nintendo's going to be mounting some rather athletic festivities this coming weekend. To commemorate the release of Super Mario 3D Land on Sunday, Nintendo will be setting up an obstacle course in New York City's Times Square on the Saturday before the game's debut, complete with trampolines, warp pipes and a flagpole marker. Along with all the frolicking, attendees will be able to take pictures with Mario and, most importantly, buy Super Mario 3D Land for the 3DS early. No word if they'll be handing out Tanooki tails.
