The Seattle Sounders will be joining the the MLS next year. Means they need a big-time sponsor. Lucky Microsoft were just up the road, then, because it's been announced that the team's sponsor for next season will be...the Xbox 360. As such, the team will have "Xbox 360 Live" splashed across the front of their kit, and the Sounders' home ground will also be referred to as "The Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field" during games. Last time a console was the major sponsor of a football team was when Arsenal's home kit had Dreamcast all over the front of it around a decade ago. That did not end well. Lucky for 360 fans, I don't think it costs quite as much to sponsor the Sounders as it does Arsenal (whose last deal cost Emirates airline $200,000,000). Oh, and the shirt's green! Newly-appointed manager of the England football team, the astute, snappily-dressed and very Italian Fabio Capello, has wasted little time in stamping his authority on the perennially underachieving national side. Gone are visits from friends and family before a game. Gone are mobile phones once the team's checked into a hotel for a match. And gone are videogames. Capello believes the England team's obsession with their consoles had contributed to a "PlayStation culture", which was distracting them from the job at hand. Sounds harsh, but then if I was being paid millions of dollars a year to play football and all I had to do was not play games a day or two before a match, I think I could manage. More »

Instead of running up and down sports courts in a zebra-striped costume, referee Robert Mruczek watches video tapes of recorded games of Pac-Man or Joust that he's been sent. This profile, by Stephen Totilo, looks at Robert Mruczek's life as a referee. Essentially, Mruczek watched videos of players completing tasks, some set out by him with large bounties, to see world records broken. This is a different kind of competitive gaming than the FPS fragfest or Madden-bowl that might otherwise come to mind. These competitions are for speed runs or high scores. Totilo's piece does an excellent job of showing a different aspect of pro gaming, one that doesn't garner CBS 60 Minutes reports on Fatal1ty. More »
