I recently posted a comment regarding the Zelda timeline and it led to a debate as to whether such a thing is even possible. That got me thinking and I wanted to suggest an article topic to the staff here at Kotaku;

"The importance of Video Game Chronology and its affects on a Video Game Series."

I would like to see the opinions of game devs, game players, and game reviewers and how they view the importance of chronology in a game. Does it help when creating a series and its squeals? Does it limit the creative process? Do you just not care or even consider it?

@Taggart6: It's totally possible.

As of right now, we know Nintendo has stated there is a distinct timeline, but not all the gaps are filled in.

We know there are 6 groups of games that are in a direct order:

OoT/MM - TP
OoT - TWW/PH - ST
TMC - FS/FSA
ALttP/LA
LoZ/AoL
OoS/OoA

And we know OOT is the very first game in the series from context and how it has been mentioned in many other titles, and yet the war that happens just prior to the game has never been mentioned in any others, plus said war led to the unification of hyrule, and no games have an un-unified hyrule.

We just need to wait for those gaps to be filled in.

But does it matter? Not really. It's fun to think about, though.

@AchromaticMagus: I think minish cap might be the first game since it starts the whole green cap tradition and has what many to be the original form of teh master sword.

@Taggart6: NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I hate when people say that, ugh. "But it's the game where he got his hat!"

NO. It's the game where a link got his hat.

Besides, again, the war that preceded OOT led to the unification of hyrule, creating the royal family and putting the entire place under one banner, the royal crest.

This crest and family is heavily featured in the minish cap- which could not have happened if it was not after OOT. :D

@AchromaticMagus: Gee, you could at least have capitalized his name... :P

btw, totally agree with you. OoT is the original Link. In fact, since he is the original Link, he's the one that deserves a sequel (after Majora's Mask, of course). The Legend of Zelda: FairyTales. Play as Link as he continues his journey to find a long lost friend. What he doesn't know is that his companion is on a journey of her own, facing daunting perils for the sake of justice in the land of
Coming November 20never.
