One year ago today I started officially blogging for Kotaku. What better way to celebrate this anniversary than by ticking off a list of journalists that appear in video games? More »

Amazing. Currently up for auction is this 2003 set of Hot Wheels toy cars. Boring, right? No. No small metal car with Jet Set Radio emblazoned on it is ever boring. More »

Oh dear. You've gone and done it, Sega. You've gone and done the one thing you needed to do to get us interested in Samba De Amigo again. You brought in a Space Channel Stage, with an Ulala cameo. Ulala and monkeys and (simulated) maracas? It's like a Dreamcast reunion party. You know how to get a man mildly excited, Sega. Oh, along with the Space Channel news, they also released the final tracklist for the game, which you can find after the jump. More »

Remakes are all the rage these days! Whether it's literally remaking a classic, or just putting out "reimaginings" of long-running franchises, we can't get enough of the good old stuff. By re-releasing Rez on XBLA, you'd think Q's Tetsuya Mizuguchi would be big on the idea of remaking more of his classic titles, right? Like...Space Channel 5, maybe? Sadly, he's not, telling Eurogamer there's no "really special reason to remake Space Channel 5 now". Reason being that Rez was an experience, which could be improved upon with HD graphics, 5:1, etc, while SC5 is "funny, like a comical TV show. I don't feel the need for much more resolution in that!". Oh dear. Just because YOU don't need to see Ulala in a higher resolution, Miz, doesn't man WE don't need to. More »

We've been hearing rumblings about a Space Channel 5 appearance on the Wii, bringing Tetsuya Mizuguchi and United Game Artists' rhythm game born on the Dreamcast back into the limelight. The only problem with those rumblings are the sources. Joke threads on 2ch, the never-reliable Magic Box, and something in German that we couldn't make out. Sega? They aren't talking, outside of telling IGN the rumors had no validity. While that sounds like a fine outright denial, we just can't shake the feeling that Mizuguchi is hiding something, being very cagey about a Space Channel 5 update. More »

Sega, capitalizing on the two things it does best, creating original tennis games and pumping out Sonic the Hedgehog appearances, is bringing the two together with Sega Superstar Tennis. Like the PlayStation 2 EyeToy cash-in Sega Superstars, the tennis game brings together franchise leaders Sonic, Ulala from Space Channel 5 and Amigo from Samba de Amigo, puts them in various Sega themed tennis courts and lets them duke it out. Other franchises are sure to be represented in Sega Superstar Tennis, in good hands at Sumo Digital, and we have our fingers crossed for representation from House of the Dead and Altered Beast. <a href="http://kotaku.com/312481/samba-de-amigo-tennis" title="Click here to read more about Samba de Amigo... While chatting with Tetsuya Mizuguchi, we touched on a variety of things. Things that matter. Like new Rez, more Ulala and Al Gore. What would be better than Rez remake? A Rez sequel. Miz didn't explicitly mention a totally new Rez, but did hint at his interest in doing a Rez sequel. So, why start off with the HD port? More »

Now that Rez creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi is hopefully finished doing the umpteenth reiteration of Lumines, he's ready to do something different, something virtual, something Second Life. Miz has agreed to create a virtual Tokyo for the pc game, and so far he envisions his creation a "museum of Japanese culture." I must've missed the Sega PC announcement for Sega Splash! Golf, as I was genuinely surprised to see that Sonic the Hedgehog was hitting the links. He's not doing a Mario Golf-like stint, simply appearing alongside other Sega trademarked characters for an online, Japanese only golf game. It looks like he'll be joined by regular sidekick Tails, Ulala from Space Channel 5, NiGHTS, Opa-Opa from Fantasy Zone and a puyo from Puyo Puyo as one of the guest stars in an otherwise uneventful cel-shaded golf game. Michael McWhertor More »

Upon looking over the games I've been playing lately, I realized that quite a number of rhythm games have been creeping their way into my collection. Ouendan!, DDR (I'm trying to shed a few pounds, so sue me), Guitar Hero 1 & 2, Donkey Konga, Space Channel 5. Now, these are definitely not games I play all the time, but I like them because they provide a great counterpoint to the often long winded games I love to play like Twilight Princess and Final Fantasy III. After wandering around the same part of the game map for an hour or two trying to level up, it's somewhat of a relief to take a break and pound out the beats on a couple of Ouendan! songs. They are quick (but not easy!) and can be played for a little while and then put down without fear of forgetting what side quest you were on when you saved last. More »

Tetsuya Mizuguchi, the man behind Rez and Lumines, talks with The Guardian's Alek Krotoski. Miz, like usual, is a good interview with much to say about music, clubbing and those evil Lumines Live micro-transactions. And he offers this back story on working with The King of Pop: <a href="http://kotaku.com/234839/whats-it-like-working-with-jacko-ask-miz" title="Click here to read more about What's It Like Working With Jacko? Kotaku sister site Idolator reports that former Deee-Lite singer Lady Miss Kier (a.k.a. Kierin Kirby) just lost a lawsuit against Sega Japan alleging that Space Channel 5's character Ulala is ripping off the Lady's schtick. More »

The question isn't what inspires Lumines creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi, but what doesn't inspire him? Giving a speech at the Develop Conference in England, Mizuguchi stated: <a href="http://kotaku.com/186942/mizuguchi-gets-deep" title="Click here to read more about Mizuguchi Gets "Deep"">More »
