Sony Online Entertainment has announced the first ever Gamers In Real Life (G.I.R.L.) design contest scholarship winner. Nearly 100 applicants submitted their video game concept art and essays for the contest, which kicked off in early April, and from those entries Julia Brasil of San Francisco was chosen to win a $10,000 scholarship at The Art Institute of California and a paid internship at Sony Online Entertainment. It was a rainy night as we headed out to the Sony Online Entertainment party for The Agency. Being all about promoting diversity in the games industry, I wanted to check this particular event out because it was featuring a panel of women from Gamers In Real Life (G.I.R.L), as well as some of the female producers of The Agency and SOE execs including Director of Corporate Communications and PR Courtney Simmons, SVP Global Sales and Marketing Rep Torrie Dorrell , SOE Seattle Producer Sherry Floyd , Director of Global Brand Marketing Laura Naviaux , Media Producer Heather Sowards, Game designer Tracey Seamster and Publicist Taina Rodriguez. Two little darlings have won a scholarship to go to National Computer Camp through WomenGamers.com. Briana F. (age 16) and Elizabeth H. (age 12) both wrote winning essays, and not only will they get money towards the camp, these girls could steal my job any day of the week. In fact, I'm not even sure I could write a complete sentence at age 12, let alone win a contest with a competent string of insightful thoughts and ideas. Slashdot directs readers to a piece in The Esacapist where author Shannon Drake discovers that the Penny Arcade dudes, Jerry "Tycho Brahe" Holkins and Mike "Jonathan Gabriel Gabe" Krahulik plan to introduce a Penny Arcade scholarship in 2006. The International Game Developers Associationg will present qualified students with full access to all sessions, roundtables and keynotes at the big show.
