Darwin Yamamoto's not that different than other gamers. He spends a lot of time looking at the faces—or, more accurately, the backs—of the medium's heroes and heroines as they open up new worlds on his TV screen. But Yamamoto's also an artist and user experience designer who's done work on the look of Valve's Steam platform and for various Microsoft products like Bing. After hundreds of hours of gaming, the New York City resident decided to render the faces of some of gaming's biggest franchises in a series of minimalist portraits. Following the outcry from European officials, Italian publisher 505 Games has decided not to release the controversial evil little girl game, Rule of Rose, in the U.K. The British Video Standards Council gave the game a 16+ game rating, causing politicians to call for a closer look at how video games are rated. In an interview with British publication MCV, the BVSC vehemently defended their decision and says the the government's claims are preposterous. More »

It seems that Rule of Rose is becoming Europe's version of Bully. Last week, the Mayor of Rome called for the game's ban and now it has escalated into a Europe wide issue. The controversy has even managed to make it to the front page of the UK Times right next to a story about prisoner abuse. Last night I finally was able to grab Rule of Rose. I made Lady Grey tea with lots of cream and sugar, put my hair in pigtails and didn't leave the couch for the next two hours. There's some new Rule of Rose stuff over on MTV's game site, Overdrive (which runs like complete crap on OSX Firefox), and it's completely without context. Who's talking in the clip with the broom goblins? The subtitles don't seem to correspond with anything. The music is pretty, but extremely repetitive. A lot of it is inappropriate for the variety of scenes it's laid over. More »
