Ravenmark: Scourge of Estellion, by Witching Hour Studios, is what happens when a small team sets out to bring the experience of, say, Fire Emblem to a platform that will never, ever get an actual Fire Emblem game.
The result is surprisingly positive: the art is lovely, the strategy surprisingly deep and well-rounded (it's built not only on movement but also positioning and even timing). The story and writing can be a little...much at times, but there's always the option to skip the Roman Empire fan fiction.
If you've been waiting for an excellent turn-based strategy game for the iPad, and refuse to pay Square Enix's extortionate asking price for Final Fantasy Tactics, then Ravenmark may well be exactly what you've been looking for.
Note: the game's also available on the iPhone, but I played it on the iPad.
