It's easy to empathize, because we've all been there, or close. You have your 9 to 5 job, it's a good gig, the work's interesting. Then an amazing once-in-a-lifetime opportunity comes along and you have to sneak out to chase it. Grace Kim, as Activision's PR lead for Guitar Hero, was in that spot a year ago in October 2007. "I was giving so many excuses," Grace said, "I even went to CVS and bought crutches, and pretended I had a fractured ankle. At this point, Activision was getting annoyed. They were really heavily promoting Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, and Guitar Hero for the DS. My boss was getting really upset." Finally, on the fifth straight day away from the office, she couldn't think up any more alibis. So she quit, but she couldn't tell Activision why. They not only went safe, picking Bioshock as their game of the year, but went with their demographic, opting to choose the 2007 game with the "Best Jiggle Factor." It might not have been my choice, as I like my gaming girls covered in slime, but I suppose Heavenly Sword deserved to walk away with some sort of accolade this year. As far as tall bald guys in suits go, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President Phil Harrison seems alright. Sure, he's said some stupid things. But, he's also said a few clever things. With all the negative mainstream press games get, it's nice to see someone not blindly follow the herd. Playboy Magazine has short article in the July issue about how games are good for you. Here's how they back it up: University of Rochester researchers state that gaming helps "sharpen visual acuity," researchers at Ontario McMaster University state that gaming improves short-term memory and the International Sports Science Association recognizes the Nintendo Wii as a legitimate fitness tool. Playboy opened its doors to a herd of game journos during the recent pro gaming draft. Siliconera snapped a few pics of Hugh Hefner's gaming den, which includes retro cabinets like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong as well as newer ones like Hydro Thunder and Police 911 2. On the walls, there are scoreboards listing high scores. Hef is apparently quite good at Pac-Man. Besides video games, there are pin ball machines and two bedrooms off to the side with mirrors on the ceiling. Gotta love the Playboy mansion. Does not disappoint. Brian Ashcraft More »

Seriously, I don't care if I'm a girl, I'm obsessed with Playboy. I may not care for the magazines (too much Photoshop!), but I do watch "The Girls Next Door" religiously, and that Hef is one marketing genius. Playboy has finally flung its doors open to the Second Life public where they will host a number of events and "social opportunities". They will also feature a Second Life retail store for Bunny paraphenlia from its site Playboy.com and Shopthebunny.com where avatars will be able to buy merchandise for both their real life and Second Life characters. Playboy magazine is opening up shop in Second Life to everyone's surprise ("Playboy isn't in Second Life?"). Although it's unclear what form the Playboy presence will have in the virtual world, as a brand this is a very modern step for Hugh Heffner and his girls. Unlike most of the companies who have set up shop in SL, Playboy seems like it would fit in with community quite seamlessly and they are getting into the virtual business at the perfect time. More »
