Sonic for PS3 was an abomination. I can't possibly think of a game nearly as frustrating as that incarnation was.
Let's hold out hope for this. I'm getting a little tired of loading up Sonic Adventure for the dreamcast.

I thought that the last one was okay, it was a bit unpolished and had a number of problems, but outrunning a lava tornado that threw cars at you at Burnout speeds was AWESOME. If Sega made a game that only featured Sonic running fast, that'd be epic.

I didn't think the PS3 game was terrible, but it WAS unpolished. Anyway, if this game features Sonic outrunning a car-spewing lava tornado, I would so buy it.

i just hope this game could make sonic good again...
i doubt it tho, sega can't seem to make it work...ever, but its nice to want things hahaha

They need to keep sonic a rail platformer in 3D or at least get rid of the annoyance of having to move slow to avoid falling of the edge. I'm not sure of what the real solution is but Sega did not give this game due diligence during it's last 3D console incarnation. It was a pity really :(

This looks amazing compared to the origional sonic the hedgehog....
I loved secret rings though, so if they implement those controls (somehow)....
Itd be awesome

well, what few game play screens I see up there, suggests something like Sonic and the Secret Rings, but it's hard to say for certain really.
Course, as far as I figure it, a good Sonic game has three requirements.
First, it must focus mostly on Sonic. One other playable character is fine, but these games with twelve playable characters don't work. Sonic's game play is typically the most polished, the most fun to play. Therefore they should focus on him, so the player actually has a sizable chunk of time playing as him.
Second, game play must be limited to mostly 2D experience, even if the visuals themselves are 3D. The reason for this is relatively simply, Sonic is supposed to run at freakishly high speeds, and the more dimensions of game play you add the more difficult it'll be to effectively control Sonic at that speed. Heck, even in the completly 2D titles he can be a bit difficult to handle at top speed. Secret Rings worked, because even though the environments were 3D, it was mostly a 2D experience. Characters went one direction, the other, or jumped.
In other words, it was simple and straight forward, and that's a necessity for a Sonic game.
And third, no gimmicks. Now, I hope I do not sound cliche here, but I do not want to see Sonic tangling with pirates, time travelers, or Gods, from the future or otherwise. Doctor Robotnic should have a nefarious scheme, it should involve huge engines of destruction, polluted machine bases, and possibly a space station with a huge gun. Do not try to add complexity to settings and characters which were designed with simplicity in mind. Sonic is not Romeo, Blaze the Cat is not Juliet, Knuckles is not Hamlet and Eggman is certainly not Richard the Third.
In other words, the plot is just a simple excuse to run around really fast and destroy robots. If Sega wants to put mini-cartoons between each stage that's their business, but the plot should not distract from this very simple premise.
Okay, hope I haven't been too hard on Sega here. They try, they really do. It's a shame they've lost so much talent in the past ten years, cause really, they were just so blasted good at one point.

Holy smokes! Look at those kicks! Shiiiny!

@WolvenOne: So true, let's hope they're revisiting more simple times.
