splitting is a very easy way to drum up capital. usually after a split the stocks value goes up by a little extra, since it's such a feel good statement. and if those newly split shares went up by even .50, that's a profit of a buck per "old" share. buying just before a split is a reasonably good low risk, instant profit investment.
