<![CDATA[shimage commented on Nintendo Facing Controller Ban Over Patent Lawsuit]]> The USPTO is broken. I feel like I'm always having to explain this, but 1) "patent" comes from latin "patere", "to stand wide open" (Dictionary.com), ergo 2) the point of the patent system is to encourage people to explain in detail how their contraption works to save society the costs of reverse engineering. Anything that's obvious upon inspection should be thrown out, regardless of how clever it is.

<![CDATA[shimage commented on Learning To Ride A Bicycle One Pedal At A Time]]> It's easier to stay upright if the bike is moving (as someone mentioned, the faster the better). All that angular momentum and torque stuff. Also, it's easier to stay up on a flat road, but it hurts more than grass when you fall down, so I suppose it's a wash. Perhaps find a grassy hill somewhere? Not too big, though ...

<![CDATA[shimage commented on Going For the Mass Market: Good News or Bad?]]> He presumes that Nintendo is fundamentally different than other developers. Supposing this is true, in what way is he not saying that other developers are, for whatever reason, fundamentally incapable of understanding the mass market (too stupid? too inflexible? who knows).

While small publishers may have problems making mass market games (and I would argue this simply isn't true, based on Majesco's success), none of his arguments explain in any capacity why companies like EA and Ubisoft completely fail at targeting "casuals" on the Wii. Activision has had success with GH3, but I think they were simply benefitting from MTV/Harmonix' indifference to the platform.

<![CDATA[shimage commented on Greenberg: The Wii? Total Fad]]> I don't understand how the Wii can simultaneously be ruining gaming for hardcores and be a fad. <![CDATA[shimage commented on What Are You Playing This Weekend?]]> Finishing LEGO Indy, and maybe starting Final Fantasy Tactics A2. There seems to be a lot of bullshit to wade through before getting to the "tactics" bit of FF Tactics. I guess that's what all the reviews were talking about when they said it was "deep"? I always found the preparation parts of Fire Emblem truly boring and this seems 10 times worse. I like how AW just dumps you into the battle with everything you need to win. It turns out chess is also a pretty deep game, and it only has 6 different units and zero resource management (aside from time).

<![CDATA[shimage commented on Nintendo Channel Reveals Hard Truths About Wii Play, Boom Blox, More]]> Neat stuff. I think I will go play with this when I get home ...

@Espiox: I'm pretty sure that once someone accepts the monitoring, Nintendo gets their full play history. It's not like it isn't there on the console. Or are you suggesting that the Nintendo Channel hasn't been out long enough in Europe for enough people to start using it?

]]>
<![CDATA[shimage commented on Boom Blox A Bust At Retail?]]> I paid $44 for it, and I thought it was worth it. No More Heroes, on the other hand, I noticed was selling for $30 when I went to buy LEGO Indy. It's too late for Grasshopper, but I picked it up anyway, since I figured I could stand to gamble $30 on it; I wasn't going to pay $50 for it. I'm strange like that.

As for 3rd parties consistently failing, there are numerous examples of 3rd parties doing well (RE4, GH3), even with new IPs (Red Steel, Carnival Games, arguably Raving Rabbids). The reason 3rd parties fail is because of marketing. Not necessarily that they didn't spend enough on the marketing, but Boom Blox certainly didn't connect with its audience. The fact that there are people that refuse to buy it based on the name and box art alone is proof of this failure. I didn't hear about anyone not-buying Okami based on the box art, but if that's all I had to go by, I would have left it on the shelf too.

<![CDATA[shimage commented on About Kotaku Reviews]]> I guess it's good to bring everyone up to speed, but isn't this all obvious to anyone that's read any of Kotaku's reviews? Who's the target audience of this article?

I was going to suggest thumbs (not like you haven't thought of them), but then I realised you're actually not very shy about saying whether you liked something or not. So they're probably superfluous. Anyway, the reviews are nice, but I feel occasionally that they're a bit too subjective to be of much value (the "no accounting for personal taste" issue). I don't hold it against you guys and girls, though, since I'm pretty sure an objective metric doesn't exist. To be honest, I mostly use gameplay videos to figure out what I should buy.

<![CDATA[shimage commented on On the Road Again]]> As was mentioned in this morning's article, a strategy of using games like Wii Fit and Brain Age to try and get people not interested in games like Metroid and WoW is doomed to failure. I don't think Nintendo is quite that stupid.

What Nintendo has done is create products that appeal to a demographic that previously had no interest in games. Nothing is going to make Final Fantasy or Gears of War interesting to my mom. Nothing. However, Nintendo are growing the industry by making products that people like my mom are willing to buy (and hopefully use). The reason Crecente's mom forgot about the DS is because she hasn't seen any software for it that she wants. What that means is that there needs to be more of these kinds of "games" that gamers hate.

Is it ruining gaming? Only if its success causes companies to stop making games for "gamers". As someone who spends most of his (gaming) time playing niche games, I've got plenty of crocodile tears for all you gamers, if that ever happens.

]]>
<![CDATA[shimage commented on Wii Fit: Innovation in Gaming or Marketing?]]> To play the devil's advocate, I would like you to consider that no other games get these types of people to even think about video"games". It's not for them. Is it really Wii Fit's problem that there aren't other games that they want to play? Perhaps if there were more effort to create software those kinds of people want to use, they would find more uses for the hardware.

I don't think the trick is to try to lure people that don't like games into gaming via software like Wii Fit. I think if they want that market, they're going to have to write software that these people want to consume. Two of these products are Brain Age and Wii Fit; we don't need more games like that, but certainly if Nintendo wants to sell to these groups, they will need more of it.

And to be fair, I don't think that the average gym membership gets any more use than your mom's DS, Crecente.

<![CDATA[shimage commented on Research Says Video Games Are For Dudes]]> Just thought I'd like to point out that the existance of alpha females does not in and of itself invalidate the study. That'd be like saying that the existance of lesbians refutes my assertion that chicks prefer doing it with dudes. Yes. there are chicks that like other chicks, as there are chicks that have the same response to videogames as dudes. Those are what we call "exceptions that prove the rule".

<![CDATA[shimage commented on First Look At Kristin Kreuk As Chun-Li?]]> I guess I wanted them to pick someone who looked Chinese (and no, she doesn't look Chinese to me at all), but I wasn't really expecting it. I mean, the two stars of "Memoirs of a Geisha" were Chinese, and nobody seemed to care. It only makes sense to hire Ziyi Zhang to play a Japanese geisha and Kristin Kreuk to play a Chinese martial artist, right? Really, the only question is why Will Smith isn't Max Payne.

Yes, I understand the problem is that I grew up in Hawaii. I can tell Japanese from Chinese from Korean, but all Europeans look the same to me.

Just asked a friend of mine what she thought Ms. Kreuk's ethnicity was and she said "Japanese and haole", so maybe she's "asian enough".

<![CDATA[shimage commented on Which Publishers Can Think Globally, Act Globally?]]> I didn't think it was a surprise that Capcom did a decent job. ]]>
<![CDATA[shimage commented on Petition To Stop Underage Erotic Game Characters]]> It's not obvious to me that there's a difference between this stuff and any other game where you do things that you shouldn't in real life. Maybe someone can explain that for me? Laws like this are why "Lost Girls" is so difficult to distribute in Europe, which makes absolutely no sense. I thought that we as gamers embraced the idea that fiction is fiction, and anyone that gets confused about where fiction stops and reality begins is already fucked, and was going to do something stupid anyway. I suppose you can make the argument that people who want this sort of stuff are predisposed towards being fucked up, but that's a slippery slope, especially if you don't have data supporting it.
