Video game hate doesn't seem to be a partisan issue... it's seems to be more of an age issue. Older politicians just don't get it. President Obama (a younger politician) has given mixed messages on the subject of gaming. Like many politicians it seems to depend upon who he is talking to. He has made statements saying that video games are a health issue because they prevent some from exercising (which can be true) but he has also said there is nothing wrong with gaming in moderation. He did buy his kids a Wii for Christmas... so there is a video game in the first family's living quarters of the whitehouse, for likely the first time.
I realized just how biased Fox news could be a few years ago. I'd been following the Valerie Plame story (covert CIA agent working in counter terrorism that was publicly named by Bush admin officials) on the internet for almost two years. FINALLY the mainstream media picked up the story when Karl Rove was issued a subpoena to testify on the subject. I switched from channel to channel during the noon news hour just to see how each outlet would handle the story. EVERY SINGLE station EXCEPT for Fox ran it as their headline story. Fox news ran it in their second half hour.... right behind a story about a Florida zookeeper that was bitten by an orangutan. A zookeeper getting bitten by an orangutan (and not seriously injured) was a higher priority than a major whitehouse official getting subpoenaed to testify about what could potentially be treason? No... they are no more biased than anyone else.
Been waiting on this receiver for a few months now. It's time to upgrade my Onkyo 606... and IMO the 800 series has always represented the best price vs feature value in the Onkyo lines. The upgrades from what I currently have that I am most looking forward to are the greater power, the Audyssey MultEQ XT, the Burr-Brown DAC's, the Dolby PLIIz so I can add height channels... and the dual simultaneous HDMI outputs so that I can display computer content simultaneously to my two HT's in adjacent rooms when I have parties.
I agree that socializing during game play makes it that much more fun, which is why I play online multiplayer almost EXCLUSIVELY. As a 42 year old woman... there just aren't that many people in my peer group who want to sit around and play video games with me. They will play Wii and Kinect.... but a hardcore FPS? fugedaboutit!
Very cute! If that were an American 4 yr old... they'd be flailing about however their little heart desired, and then have a kicking, screaming conniption when they got an F. Then their parent would sue MS for damaging their child's self esteem.
I just respond with "of course I am fat and ugly, and YOU are a pimply nerd virgin who plays games 24 hours a day in their grandma's smelly basement. That's why stereotypes are so AWESOME... because they are always RIGHT!"
@Nethlem: I wouldn't say nobody. There's not a day I sign on when I don't see people on my friends list using Netflix or party chat or other features that would only come with gold.
@Microshock: You are mistaking COST for VALUE. Cost is typically very easy to determine, because it is usually clearly spelled out. Value, on the other hand is very subjective. What may be a good value for one may not be for another. The way one determines if something is a good value for them, is to break down it's total cost into usage units; in this case days, since many XBL users do use it almost every day. Do they not teach simple economics in high school anymore? Or did you skip in in deference to Profanity 101?
@WilFTW: Because I get hours of entertainment a day from it. I'm paying more than $3 a day for satellite and use it about the same number of hours I use Live... so it's more expensive. I pay $8/month for Netflix.... and only use it a couple of times a month. I pay $50/month for internet and don't use it for entertainment for more than an hour a day. About $20 per blu-ray that I'll watch three times top. It is definitely MY cheapest entertainment expense.
@Microshock: Right.... and when you are buying a house.... you pay for the whole house, yet a GOOD realtor will still tell you the price per sqaure foot to help you determine if the house is a good value.
@pfc.joker: Been there done that. When my PS3 got the YLOD, I just bought a standalone blu-ray player instead.
Sure there aren't as many annoying 12 year old voices on PSN, because there just aren't as many voices at all. It was not uncommon at all to go into PS3 game after PS3 game and not hear a single soul talking at all. That's not my idea of fun multiplayer gaming. I just mute the annoying people on XBL and enjoy talking strategy, trash, or even the weather with the rest.
I don't get all of the crying about this. Live is the single most feature filled online gaming service. Most Gold subscribers probably use it at least 250 days a year, yet it costs less than ONE dinner for two at a cheap restaraunt. It costs less than one cheap pair of shoes.
@Microshock: That's not stupid at all. It's incredibly common AND sensible to assess the cost to value ratio of something by how much usage and enjoyment you get from it. Unless you do all of your gaming for the year in one marathon session, then looking at the daily cost for Live vs your daily usage of DOES make sense.
So instead of 13 cents a day.... it will be 16 cents a day. Considering the average number of hours a day that I use it... it is still the cheapest entertainment expense in my household.... by a HUGE margin.
