<![CDATA[Comments from psycoking]]> <![CDATA[Comments from psycoking]]> <![CDATA[psycoking commented on ESA: This Is The "Golden Age" Of Gaming]]> @gamadaya: @Black-Dog-Howls: It internet and the anonymity it provides has basically turned the fanboy into a raving madman. It doesn't help that this current generation doesn't really have anything to fight about. The currently available games tend to show that both systems perform about the same, with no game so far showing a clear graphical or computational advantage on either system. Also, since most publishers have gone multiplatform, pretty much every highly anticipated title gets released on both systems. Now, most fanboy arguments tend to boil down to petty differences like price or the number of disc a game will have to be on, soon to be followed by namecalling...

<![CDATA[psycoking commented on Shane Kim: Don't Call It A Price Cut]]> Hmm... I remember people being a lot angrier when Sony announced its temporary price reduction when it was trying to clear out its stock of 60GB PS3s. In fact people got so pissed when the 80GB models debuted at the regular price that Sony had to make the $100 price cut permanent. At the time Sony also made it clear that the price cut was temporary, but people didn't seem to get the message. Since the average consumer doesn't follow E3 news, I'm hoping the rage that hit Sony hits MS as well and they make the price cut permanent. I'd like to pick up and XBox soon, and It'd be nice if I could get it at a good deal :)

<![CDATA[psycoking commented on Final Fantasy XIII Coming To Xbox 360]]> 0_0

Wow, the first non-exclusive Final Fantasy game.

Wow.

I guess its kind of karmic the way that Microsoft is flexing it financial muscles in an attempt to slaughter its compitition the same way Sony did to ensure a win for Blu-ray. Still, as a PS3 owner, this hurts.

<![CDATA[psycoking commented on CD Projekt To Sell "Good Old Games" DRM-Free]]> @BaseVilliN: I've had this issue with Vista. Put the game on Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode. That will reduce the frequency of the palette fuck ups. Also, in that mode you should be able to clear any palette errors by alt+tabbing out and back into the game.

]]>
<![CDATA[psycoking commented on CD Projekt To Sell "Good Old Games" DRM-Free]]> This sounds like a great idea, and I would definitely back it with my money. My only questions are if they'll have old 16-bit games, and if those games will work on 64-bit windows?

I run on Vista x64 and it runs all my games fine, however all my old 16-bit DOS games need to be run in DosBox.

<![CDATA[psycoking commented on Soulcalibur IV Adds One More Female Fighter]]> @Placentasaurus: Agreed on Yoshitaka Amano. I'd also like to see a character designed by Tony Taka (Shining Tears/Wind, T2 Art Works) in the game. I think it would fit quite nicely among the new charaters.

<![CDATA[psycoking commented on Sony Have "No Plans" For PS2 Downloads On PSN]]> @SAKY: Both the Xbox and Xbox360 are based on similar architectures; essentially the same architecture that modern day PCs use. The Xbox used a single x86 based general purpose CPU, and the Xbox360 uses a 3-Core PowerPC based general purpose CPU. While there are differences between the x86 and PowerPC architectures, they are both based on the same traditional design that has been powering PCs since the 80s. As Vipre77 said, it would easier to emulate the Xbox on an Xbox360 due to their architectural similarities. Even so, emulating the Xbox on the Xbox360 is hard enough that MS took a game by game approach before quiting earlier this year.

As for the PS2 and PS3, both systems are based on very different and more complex architectures, centered around a single general purpose CPU and a number of special purpose processors: 2 Vector Processing Units for the PS2, and 7 Synergistic Processing Elements for the PS3. As it stands, Sony has managed to emulate most of the functionality of the Emotion Engine on the PS3 (80GB models), but has not been able to emulate the PS2s Graphics Synthesizer (the GS is included in the 80GB PS3s).

]]>
<![CDATA[psycoking commented on Sony Have "No Plans" For PS2 Downloads On PSN]]> In order for this to happen Sony would have to implement a full working PS2 emulator for the PS3, and that is no small task. Saying PS2 games will be available on PSN is equivalent to saying that Sony has solved their BC problems, since there would be no real reason why a game that is playable on the hard drive would not also be playable on disc (unless Sony decides to fiendishly screw people into buying games they already own).

While I wouldn't doubt that Sony wants a solution to the BC problem, I am not completely certain that a full working PS2 emulator is feasible on the PS3s hardware (Note: that's not an insult to the PS3, remember that it takes substantially more powerful hardware to emulate a system that's based on a different architecture). And even if it is feasible, its going to be mighty hard to build an emulator for such a complex system on top of an even more complex system.

<![CDATA[psycoking commented on Ever Re-Name A Video Game?]]> I use to rename TV shows all the time, usually after the main character (ie. Married with Children = Al Bundy show). I don't do that so much anymore, as I no longer watch TV (no cable + bad reception = no sitcoms ). I've never really done this with games, with the exception of a few Metal Gear/Slug mix ups (eg. Metal Slug Solid) that are usually quickly corrected.

<![CDATA[psycoking commented on Blizzard Splashwatch Day Four - Lost Edition]]> The more I see of the splash screen the less I think it's Diablo III. The silhouette in the image looks like a Protoss to me. This might just be SCII related, though that would be a bit anticlimactic since that game has already been announced. Maybe Blizzard is nearing the completion of SC:Ghost, or maybe they're gearing up to announce The World of Starcraft.

]]>
<![CDATA[psycoking commented on Does This Latest Update Prove Diablo III? (Or Not??)]]> @biggitio: Ditto. I headed over to the Blizzard launch page and thought it looked more like rock them ice. However, I'm not about to shout "D3 CONFIRMED!!!", as I originally thought that this was a Lich King promo.

Maybe this is Blizzard tricking us into thinking Lich King instead of Diablo III. Or maybe Blizzard simply ported the Diablo II runes over to WoW for the new Inscription profession.

<![CDATA[psycoking commented on Final Fantasy IV DS Screens Draw Tears]]> Fahey, I thought the same thing when I saw that pic. Final Fantasy IV was the first FF game I beat (with the only other one I beat being FFX). It was such a great game, and I look forward to playing it again when this remake comes out.

Also, I noticed that all the pics with Cecil in them were of Cecil Dark Knight, but where are my pics of Cecil Paladin?

<![CDATA[psycoking commented on Happy Birthday Sonic!]]> I remember the old days when our platforming mascots were from Earth! None of these fancy space furries we got now, what with midget robots ridding on their backs and all. And no sissy elves with talking pet squirrels either! No sir, that kinda stuff wouldn't fly in the good old days.

So here's to you Sonic, a simple hedgehog who didn't need no highfalutin arsenal o' guns to save the world. Nope! Sonic, he had one attack, and, by gum, one attack was all he needed! Happy birthday ya old sun of a bitch! Next rounds on me!

<![CDATA[psycoking commented on RE5 Race Debate Continues]]> Hmm. It seems that Olorunda's post seems to take issue more with the position of minorities in the media in general. Olorunda focuses on the video game industry namely because that particular article was triggered by the RE5 trailer. While I disagree with her position on the game trailer -- it did not appear to me that the Africans in the trailer were being depicted as hostile/evil specifically because they were African -- some of her complaints were viable: specifically, her issues with games featuring black on black violence, and the lack of positive minority role models. In the end I interpreted the article as asking the question "why are minorities the badguy again?" and "where are our minority heros?"

While I don't think RE5 is racist, or that changing the game would "fix" anything (though I'm betting that at least the American release will add a few "tourist" in attempts to solve the issue), as a latino, I wouldn't mind seeing a few movies/games/etc with latino protagonists that are not gangsters (or ex-gangsters), are not fighting badguys of the same race, and do not sound like Cheech Marin or Rosie Perez. I'm sure Olorunda feels the same way about her own race.

<![CDATA[psycoking commented on Rumor: Details On Sony's Motion Controls, No "Break-Apart"]]> Well Microsoft is making a Xiimote, so it would make sense for Sony to release a Piimote. Though, after reading the post it sounds like Sony will just be selling a strap or something that you can use to bind DS3s to your body. After all, they do already sense motion. I get an image in my head of some dude with 4 DS3s strapped on him playing a game like Olympics 2008.

<![CDATA[psycoking commented on MMO Business Models: Subscriptions vs. Free To Play]]> Micro-transactions seem like a smart idea. While I'm sure subscription based MMOs will never die, we are already seeing a flood of free-to-play MMOs, and I'm sure we will soon see a few subscription based MMOs supplemented by micro-transactions. I'm pretty sure Ragnarok Online already does this.

These micro-transactions do not necessarily need to unbalance the game either. Rather than having players pay to get uber weapons and armor, developers offer gamers services which can make for a better experience in the game. Take a look at Mabinogi's Shop. For about the price of a WoW subscription Mabinogi gives its players extra bank space, the ability to set up there own shop, rights to create a guild, and a handful of special potions and items to make traveling and leveling a bit easier. For extra cash, you can expand upon the options available at character creation to have a more personalized character. Wow, this all sounds like an ad for them, but my point is that there are micro-transaction services that are not necessarily unfair or unbalanced to players who refuse to pay a premium.

Since there's cash in it, it would be smart for larger MMOs, like WoW, to pick up on it. In the case of WoW, character personalization items would probably be best, like the ability to purchase a special mount. This mount wouldn't have anything special over other in game mounts, but would just look cooler and cost money. Hell, Blizzard is already doing this with their card game and no one seems to mind that.

]]>
<![CDATA[psycoking commented on Petition To Stop Underage Erotic Game Characters]]> Touchy subject. I won't argue about it directly as I have my own opinions about it, and I doubt airing them will change the opinion of anyone else whose already made up there mind either way, especially since a majority of the arguments for both the pro and con sides have already been made (eg. no need to regurgitate what has already been said).

Instead I will focus on one of the tangents that this law will end up effecting, namely (non-pornographic) anime in general. Now, I won't argue, as some here already have, that this law will force the exclusion of all perceived underage women from appearing in anime even in a non-sexual manner, as that argument makes little sense to me. Instead, I wish to mearly point out that such a law, if inacted, would close of a major creative vein for the anime industry. I take it that many of the people participating in this discussion are anime fans to at least some degree, so I believe that it is important that people realize that many popular anime series originated as erotic games. Fate/Stay Night, Air, Utawarerumono, Shuffle!, Kanon, and many others first appeared as eroge, and all of these game feature women who are under 18 years of age. If this law is passed, then the creative line from which these anime are drawn will be cut. While I'm not saying this law would mean the end of anime altogether (it certainly wouldn't), I'd hate to imagine all the great anime series we would be missing out on because a group of people felt uncomfortable about "underage" drawings.

<![CDATA[psycoking commented on ESA, Game Critics' Awards Debate "Best Of E3" Eligibility]]> The problem is that the Companies that have left the ESA and E3 will still technically be participating in the E3 festivities. While they may not be on the main floor, I'm sure Vivendi, Activision, and other companies still plan on having their own mini-shows in the area around the LA Convention Center where E3 is being held. Like Keighley said, in the past games that where shown off of the E3 floor (like at a publishers private party, or at a one of the big three's Pre-E3 shows) were considered for awards, so why shouldn't they consider those games show outside of the convention hall this year?

<![CDATA[psycoking commented on Soulcalibur IV Ups Its T&A Quotient Again]]> @damienchowder: I would say instant sale, but I realize this type of gameplay would grow old rather quickly (see DOA:Xtreme Beach Volleyball). Plus it would be rather hard trying to control the game with my controller in one hand and my joystick in the other >_<

Ok, enough of that.

I find the comments stating that SoulCalibur "sold out" rather unfounded, not to mention insulting to the game's developers. The reason I find in unfounded is that the T&A has always been in this series. Not only that but each subsequent installment has shown a growing amount of T&A (both figuratively and literally). Personally, I would find it odder if the series had decided to go in the opposite direction and toned it down a bit. For those of you thinking that SCIV finally brings the T&A factor to the point of being ridiculous: sorry, that happened in SCIII. If you are embarrassed that someone might see you playing the game and think that you are a pervert, I can only offer you this advice: You shouldn't care what other people think. If you know you are not a pervert then you're not. Simple, see ^_^

When I see damienchowder's above described SoulCalibur:Onsen, then I'll consider the possiblity of the series selling out (shortly after I preorder my copy, that is).
