And what would they get out of doing that? You have a quality title that's beginning to get tons of praise from the media, selling at $40. Put it on any iOS device for anything more than $3.99 and you'll have a herd of kids that somehow can't stand paying anything more than 5 dollars for a game. This is precisely the kind of thing Iwata and co's been criticizing (and the wad of game sites conveniently ignoring, intentional or not).
3ds games can take a little bit of getting used to, especially when you first get the system. I bet totilo's experience could have been 180degrees different if it was the first thing he popped into the system.
I've played Samurai Warriors on and off since JP launch, and the first few days it did give me some eyestrain. Now that I've gotten used to the whole concept? No problems.
Holding the power button shuts down whatever you're running on the fly. So does pressing "end app" after you press the home button.
And I disagree about the touchpad -- I won't want my iDevice to get resistive touch, but browsing webpages and making precise touches on the screen is another story altogether. And unless I happened to have gotten a better 3DS than all of you (or have superhuman thumbs), the touch screen is definitely plenty sensitive to allow for finger touches when absolute finesse isn't required.
a little ironic that news of copyright infringement is sourced from a game blog that is notorious for doing the exact same thing. Hopefully they get taken down eventually as well -- it's sad to see sites that do nothing but manipulate 2ch posts and magazine scans get 5 times as much traffic as websites that actually write their own content (impress, 4gamer, even kotaku.jp to some degree).
the hell, Luke? the website mentions that battery life can change depending on the screen brightness, but makes no mention that this is the "longest running time" or that it's based on low brightness settings. I realize you guys need to rake in hits, but I certainly don't appreciate seeing sites I used to frequent pull stuff out of their ass or jump to conclusions. You guys have a good bilingual reporter, use him.
...then again, the more people that decide it's not worth it, the easier it'll be for me to get a 3ds near launch. Ok yeah, go get them greedy-assed Nintendo goons!
I don't mind some piracy happening anymore -- the allure of something for nothing (well, nothing except for advertising dollars your warez site receives) will always sway people to varying degrees, and this little taste of anarchy is the price of a free-er internet.
What I still don't understand to this day, though, is how some people seem to actually gloat about their participation in what's essentially the digital equivalent of a chinese bootleg DVD market.
Hey #Apple, change the #iPad switch back to screen lock!
Seriously. Congrats to the people that like the change, but I do not. Lots of people don't. A serious change like this one should at least have been an option. When I bought into the apple craze I heard that they cared about their customers, but obviously this has not been the case. I'm sure the antenna crap with the iphone4 would have gone ignored if it didn't blow up in their faces, either.
@Bubbleman! Demands any action RPG fan play Terranigma.: Every time he's talked Komoto seemed pretty damn insistent that AH will not be implemented. Coming from the guy that constantly kept buffing/nerfing everything else to keep Absolute Virtue 'unbeatable' it may take some extra motivation to get something like this to work.
Besides, I've also heard that influx in town population caused by some user-ran bazaar events in Figaro managed to take down the server for some time; if true, the swarms of people that would be around AHs (think Whitegate AH) would probably be enough reason for concern that they couldn't implement it.
That said, it would be nice to see it coming, and it would motivate me somewhat to get the game -- assuming some of my friends still haven't given up.
Gotta love Komoto. If his name doesn't ring a bell to any former FF11 player as quickly as Tanaka's name, he's the idiot responsible for Promathia. Yeah, the one that helped wipe well over half your friend list. The crew seems to love inhibiting progress in the worst ways possible, and this is certainly no exception.
The hard cap on exp this imposes will certainly end up having a bigger effect on the casuals -- the early birds that consistently exp'ed will be at the top of the heap first no doubt, but their position at the top of the heap will stay that way longer, because the average player won't be able to try 'playing catch-up' on the weekends, even if they wanted to. Suppose the up-side to the game getting slammed for this feature now is that they may actually do something about it now.
I also do wonder how much of the game they really implemented at this point -- the cap will allow them a little more time to develop endgame content before people reach level caps and ends of storylines, but not much. Hopefully it doesn't turn out like the Wings of the Goddess expansion for FF11, a storyline arc that's yet to be finished 3 years after its release.
Interesting that none of the blogs are touching on the part about SCE being in excess debt towards the magnitude of $100mil. Probably the most hotly debated part of all this on the 2ch threads, and it certainly changes the story dramatically -- they're essentially taking away the remaining possible profit source (networking division) and getting ready to spit the rest (SCE) out either to rot, or to sell off to some prospective buyer.
Of course nothing might happen, but the prospects are interesting indeed.
@Pahibiont: oh I know, that's why I said 14 and 15 (there are people in this world that will insist that the only FF that counts is 1-10 and 12-13). The writer behind the Windurst scenario is leading the entire 14 plot so it'll most definitely be some good shit.
A lot of what he says is unfounded. Western RPGs taking a sandbox approach? Definitely, but that's their way of disguising what's really a linear plot sprinkled with a bunch of side quests. Decisions made in the side quests make little difference to the final endgame, but it makes users think they are in control anyway.
And that's probably what they're missing, that regardless of the game they need to sell you on the "illusion" of freedom, regardless of its impact. And it's not like this hasn't been exploited well in the past -- your choice of brides in Dragon Quest 5 makes little difference to the game itself (or to the plot), but its presentation makes it a huge part of the mid-game. In FF6 you can save Shadow and you can save Sid. Again, fairly minor additions to the game but touches that add to the illusion of control.
I think their decision to stick with pre-rendered cutscenes really cut into their options -- you don't want to be making extra scenes for 1 character either being there or not, after all. Square themselves have already shown us numerous times that you can have a linear, free, thriving world; if the press decides XIII didn't quite do it for them, well by all means I hope they resolve that issue for XIV and XV, as they sure as hell have the talent to do so.
@Sabre_Justice: Okay, no more long name.: oh yeah, definitely. After all, this is just one of the venues that highly talented, but less than lucky, people go to unleash their creative prowess. Hell, a fairly recent winner of the Naoki award -- one of the most prestigious literary awards in Japan -- was originally in the H-game field.
There's definitely an overwhelming tendency for the writers to be pieces of shit, but there are certainly people amongst them that are using the extreme freedom in creativity (long as there's some sex in there everything else is fair game) to create some stuff that put the best video games and even novels to shame.
I don't think this is the 'most delayed' game btw.
'Lovers' was announced in 2001 winter's Comiket for a April, 2002 release; after about 10 delays it came out in October 2003. More recently I recall 'Sakura Sakura' taking control of h-game threads over how long it was delayed.
On the console port side, White Album for the PS3 was intended for release with the anime version @ early 2009, and is now due out for a summer 2010 release. Guess it'll be snowing in Australia...
@Sabre_Justice: Okay, no more long name.: there ARE people who pay for this stuff (hence the reason there are businesses built around it). And they're also dropping like flies thanks to rampant piracy, probably because there are ways to get them for free.
It's slightly ironic though, that there are quite a few hotshot writers involved with the more successful games -- there's quite a few major light novel authors that started out as H-game writers.
if this really is for the 'popular' vote why are we only given the options to vote for these more-or-less 'editor' favorites? Sure, MW2 may not have been the best thing out this year compared to everything else, but it also sold a shitton and there are MANY people out there for whom it was the only holiday game. Your job as journalists is obviously to show these rednecks the other great games that're out there, but it shouldn't be done at the expense of skewing the results. Don't give me the BS that the 'other' slot should take care of that, because there's an obvious psychological barrier there between something that is listed and something that isn't. Same goes for Mario Wii, and many other games that deserved to be mentioned but wasn't.
Not that I voted for either of those -- my vote went to Steins;Gate. First game in a long time where I committed myself to the game-eatwhilegame-game-sleep-game style of gameplay.
If the law calls for up to 7 years, then great. Most likely the jury will tone down the duration of his stay (there's a good chance you'll have 'compassionate' people in the jury who'll give even the most hardened criminals and liars a break -- I was repeatedly facepalming myself when I served and half the people thought it was cruel to punish a thief), and he'll be doing way less than 7yrs.
