jgross commented on Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack Trailer did that voiceover remind anyone else of GY!BE's song, 'Dead Flag Blues?'

"The car's on fire and there's no driver at the wheel
and the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides
and a dark wind blows..."

maybe that's why i liked that trailer so much.

yeah, a little over the top, and yeah, it's a trailer for a map pack.

but blizzard started it with the expansion-trailers and why not? it's to build excitement for a release.

worked for me, son.

jgross commented on How Long Until DLC Adopts The Rental System? i think this is a very valid projection. the only thing is that i see the 'used' being out of the question, since really what you're paying less for when you buy a used copy retail is the fact that it could have scratches, the packaging/manual aren't in the best shape, and it's not sealed.

Digital distribution writes those factors out of the equation, as there's no difference between a 'new' and 'used' download, if it's certified un-altered. (code-wise)

since the current platform for distribution is relatively closed to outside tampering (XBL, PSN, Steam), the 'certification' of it being authentic is readily feasible.

if any kind of after-market trading goes on, i see it as an ebay-style bidding or like the faux-market in online games like FFXI, where supply and demand dictate how much you can re-sell it for.

jgross commented on American No More Heroes Manual Is A Black & White Disappointment coming from a guy who does videogame packaging for a living, i'm betting it's a combination of lack of time/budget to get a localization of the artwork, and going with an agency that didn't have any of those assets and the time/budget to do anything equally creative in English.

Sometimes, it's directly the budgeting of the publisher that impacts color vs. b&w, and it seems to happen more often than not with games localized from other markets and the publishers not being sure if the game will be a success, so they cut the corners and go grayscale.

going cmyk can quad-up the production cost of the manuals and a lot of times it's just not at the forefront of the budget.

i think that, collector's editions aside, we're going to see less and less neat internal package components.

at least they're not including them as PDF's. (yet)

jgross commented on Why Isn't CES Filling E3's Gaping, Festering Hole? From what i've seen at CES (particularly this year) is that a lot of the stuff debuted there are prototypes geared towards buyers, at least for the smaller companies. there was some gaming stuff (wii 'lightsaber' and 'pistol' models? hah) there, and dell had their voodoo displays, but i know what you're saying.

it seems like it will be more focused on the sessions next year, rather than the hardware/tech displays.

as gaming and hollywood come closer each year, the panels will (hopefully) continue in the right direction and allow some really interesting insight that can only come from combined viewpoints that originate outside the general videogame industry, and what we see at GDC.

theoretically.

jgross commented on Gamespot Editor Fired Over Kane & Lynch Review? just like the film industry and their pen of 'quote-whores' (Peter Travers, anyone?), the gaming-review-sector is now facing the same pressure.

i mean, videogames have, over the last year or so, moved from a little sidebar in Daily Variety to a couple of cover stories. (This being a single example of how gaming in general has recently 'blown up' in the entertainment industry as a whole)

that means dollars, and from those dollars come suits with vices for parent companies' heads.

and thus the era of the Honest Videogame Review soon came to an end...

sad, if this is true.

sad, but not shocking in the slightest.
