@dowingba: Especially considering that a lot of people--for better or worse--look at Kotaku while at work.

I was just trying out the beta. I clicked "Next Story" and was soon greeted by a blaring "SUPERMAN THE GAME..." I didn't need those coworker stares.
@surft: That is definitely the best rewards program I've ever heard of. I get "cash rewards," which means at the end of every year they give me a $4 or $5 credit for the rewards I've built up over the past 12 months. Merry Christmas.
The problem with this game is that you will never, EVER be able to get your Sims' hygiene meter above the critical red level.
@notrock: Indeed. In the words of Civ IV, "No, the old ways are best."
@bboy.das: Not quite. I think Chris means "think" on a level apart from the virtual one you're supposedly immersed in. When playing Mario, a skillful player thinks "I need to jump over that gap," and can do so without also thinking "I need to hold down B and then hit A at the right time." The latter statement fades away with practice and becomes implied by the former one.

In the same way, when speaking your native language, you don't have to think about how to say something. You just say it. Whereas if you're speaking a language you know less well, you have to consciously think about what you want to communicate and how you can map that on to the words you actually know.
To those crying unoriginality, the Chronicle of Higher Education claims that sheer quality of this rendering sets its above its Eastern antecedent:

And, important to sweaty-handed administrators concerned about costs, the building was not actually "defaced" in the process of putting it up.
@yourenzyme: Fourth! I'm afraid that's all of us though =(
The locations are probably appropriate to their corporate image. Apple opened their first stores in hip downtown New York and San Francisco. Microsoft decided to go with the suburban shopping mall.
'Reuters adds, "However, regardless of gender, clear correlations were seen between frequent gaming and more frequent alcohol and drug use and lower quality personal relationships, as well as more frequent violent gaming and a greater number of sexual partners and low quality personal relationships."'

Because as any good researcher will tell you, correlation always equals causation. Particularly when you can criticize the soul degrading properties of today's new-fangled trends.

When I saw that snowman, I knew it was from London. Because it may be the "worst" snowfall in 18 years, but it's also the best. It's perfectly suited to the creation of snowballs, snowmen, and random encounters. It's not at all like the icy snow I got very familiar with in Minnesota last winter.
"Every day that passes I feel more and more silly for spending $600 on the 60GB at launch. Then I slip in a PlayStation 2 game and feel much better about it."

Low blow.

I'd just like to add my voice to the throng of Maggie appreciators. As a fellow trooper trudging through the marsh of academia, it warmed by sleep-deprived heart to see you put out favorite hobby in a more analytical light.
Holy crap, AJ, how did you find the time to play through this game more than once?
That'll teach 'em to stop making good games!
Just further proof of the notion that there is no problem money (in the form of exclusive JRPG's) can't solve.
Ah, for one glorious second I saw this on the front page and thought that there was news of another Xenosaga game.

Oh well, the figure is still pretty cool.

Anyone know what some of these games are?

A number of them looked interesting.. (i.e. not the "learn to cook" or "dress up people" games)

I'm increasingly becoming convinced that the notion of "games as art" will suffer until we arrive at the point where there is just one master platform. No one expects that their DVD player will only play certain movies. It would simplify things greatly in the mind of the consumer if there could just be a "game player" that one could hook up to one's TV and play any game on the shelf at the store.

And even if each generation had its own unquestioned champion, a la the PS2, there's no telling that the seminal games of that generation would be playable on the next generation's "winner." Someone who wanted to get the full Metal Gear Solid experience after playing MGS4 would have to spend $100 on an 8 year old console to do so. The same applies to games like Tales of Vesperia or Resident Evil 5.

Unlike those of us reading this site, most people don't want to get bogged down in console distinctions. They want to be able to play their game. Standardization is going to be what brings gaming into the mainstream... not waggle.

Google used to be sleek because they didn't get their hands dirty. Now it seems like they just hunt for horrible markets to enter (virtual worlds, browsers).

They would do better to facilitate the use of streetview and other services by developers for their own games. Google makes money, developers get a cool toy to work with, and everyone's happy.

@ggodo:
No kidding.

The next bit of news about her we get is going to feature a picture of her sleeping. It will be recognizable as coming from a camera phone and you'll certainly be able to see part of the photographer's finger in the corner. And considering some of the comments this post has gotten, I wouldn't be surprised if that upped the page views considerably.
