"Uncharted 3's story is so powerful..." - I'm not entirely convinced. Having played through it twice, I still have some fundamental problems with the villains in this game. Who the hell is Talbot? And what is his motivation to continue traipsing along with Marlowe? The game never really addresses it. I also feel like Marlowe was a missed opportunity- she seemed very sinister from the onset, but never really developed into more than a "I'M THE VILLAIN!" character. Why was she so hellbent on on finding the Iram of the Pillars?
It’s strange- I swore I’d never come back here to comment after the Arkham City spoiler post, but alas here I am. I feel compelled to respond to this article, because I like your posts.
You say that you’re tired of being a "woman in games." I’m tired of the gaming community in general. We’re subject to anonymous racism and sexism while gaming online, and it still feels juvenile to call oneself a gamer proudly. I hesitate to tell strangers about my avid appreciation for this medium- if that’s insecurity, so be it. But it also is indicative of my own disappointment with this industry. I keep asking the same damn questions- where is the diversity in videogame protagonists? Why is someone always shouting some racial slur on Xbox Live? Will there be a game that endorses post radical 3rd wave feminist principles? Why do I always seem to be shooting things? Will Mirror’s Edge 2 ever be made? And the list goes on. But these are my questions- topics that I wish someone would discuss that I care about.
I think people seek validation and reach out to you, because the issues are still taboo. Not enough gaming websites devote their blog posts to cultural and gender discussions- gamers realize that maybe you can represent them in some odd way (whether being a female gamer, a prominent journalist, an avid Bayonetta fan, etc.). And they want you to broadcast some of the issues that are troubling them- which is completely unfair. You are your own writer, and a fine one at that. Unfortunately, you don’t speak for many gamers that do feel neglected, or offended by issues that seem silly to you to write about.
And yet there are other prominent games journalists, male or female, that seem to have the position to speak on such issues and choose not to. Videogame journalism needs a complete upheaval. We need new reviewing discussions- not just number attributions for scores. We need better analysis on gameplay written by journalists who are capable. And we need more discussion on issues like eliminating sexism to help the gaming community understand how to gain credibility, respect one another, and practice that "empathy" you mention.
Jesus fucking christ. I've been coming to this site for years, and even with all the spoiler discussion that happens around here, most fucking editors are kind enough to leave it off the main page. What could be so hard about explaining that this discussion will delve into the plot of the game after clicking on the article RATHER THAN SEEING IT ON THE MAIN FUCKING PAGE.
I'm just disappointed. No, I didn't read your article. Maybe you clarified this wasn't the case. But if this does happen in the game, and you've ruined it for many of your readers, please fuck off. Entirely.
I've just been going through Resident Evil 4 again- it's so fucking wonderful! That and maybe some Mercenaries online with the 3DS and some Harry Potter- Half Blood Prince to get in the spirit for the movie. It's raining over here on the east coast, so it's quite the excuse to stay in and hang with Leon~!
This list needs some Shadows of the Damned! A wild ride from start to end, and stylistically it looks and sounds fantastic! dream team developers united!
