I'm trying to comment on the welcome don't panic story and I guess this is it? But I have no idea. It says start a new thread in discussion threads which seems more like a forum thing but I'm on the story. So if This goes to the wrong place then my apologies. I've been reading Kotaku for years and commeting as well and gotta say that with this redesign I'm switching to Joystiq. I'll check back once in a while to see if it gets better but as it is it's completely unusable. I have no idea if I'm actually commenting on the story. If your on main view it just loads up a random article I may not care about. On blog view I get the same thing twice but once in a smaller version. My star and avatar seem to have disappeared but if I check my profile they seem to still be there. Just awful awful awful redesign.
@Mubtee: I used the word in popular usage. Language isn't a static thing. If it was though I could point out that ethnicism isn't to do with ethnicity and dictionaries won't list it as such. As far as I'm aware ethnic discrimination and racial discrimination are the same things.

Also why do you assume I'm a white, straight male just because I'm British? Seems like a strange assumption.
@MrGOH: Sorry but gamerscore does serve a feature. If I could select to only be matched with people who had more than 5k I would be happy. Because a lot of people below that level are either new accounts because they were banned, brand new and have no idea what they are doing or children who just have like 2 games.

Someone who always cheats or is always hateful is less likely to have a high gamerscore because the more games they play the higher the chance of them being banned because of too many complaints.
@Kyosuke_Nanbu: I actually don't think it's to do with SF4. I just think it's the smaller the game lobby the more it happens. The most I ever got was from playing Gears of War online. Because it's you and 7 other people. So it's very easy to kill someone a lot, have a bad round and your team get annoyed etc. Whereas in big games you kinda get lost in the numbers unless you really mess up.

In a fighter literally everything you do is seen by the other person. And them losing is 100% because of you. So they just focus on you.
@CthulhusKing: I dunno about MoH but I would guess in Bad company it's because if you are talking with someone you are in a squad of at most 4 people. And you basically are relying on them to be helpful.

You start being offensive and you are getting no revives, no ammo, no help etc. I bet if there was a pre-game lobby you would hear it just as much.
Am I the only one that thought it was funny that one of the girls is in a clan called PMS? The type of comment that if you said to a girl gamer they must be pmsing that you would end up on that website. Just made me chuckle.

I think this site does have value though, in exposing people on xbox live who are horrendous. However it's actually kinda strange to limit it to just messages against girls. Why not just make it all hateful messages and have different sections?

I'm British and i've had a fair few racist messages from people.
@Manic0892: Not really. It's a generalisation but definitely not sexist. Companies can simply pull figures on this stuff. I would bet if you looked at games like Gears of war, GTA, Dead space that the audience would be 90%+ male.

I would also bet that while a large percentage of 10year old boys would find Gears or god of war fun. Most 10 year old girls would not.
Wait the extremely expensive 3d tvs with almost zero content that can actually be displayed on them are failing?

I mean honestly if you buy a 3d tv what are you going to do on it? Play the 10games that support it and watch the 10movies that do?
@sg1969: Lol you get those questions both ways though. I think my favourite two were Japanese friends asking if we had starbucks and disney in the UK lol.

Those ones I don't mind so much. It's the ones where one person has said something and everyone just accepts it.

For example snopes lists used panties machines as true and their evidence? Because a few people said so and there is a law forbidding it. This is despite the fact that perhaps the most common picture of a used panties vending machine is a guy standing next to one that is actually selling brand new underwear for men and women. I suspect this is where the rumour started. People seeing a machine and just making assumptions.
@resvrgam: It's called art. Perhaps you have heard of it?
@vonFurious: .... X.x erm was there meant to be a picture there? Because as it stands you just spoke pure madness to me.
@Korbei83: The original was pretty blatantly gundam. It's like suing a company who come out called Cuke with a almost identical logo except it's orange instead of red.

In fact clearly I'm in the right as they had to change their statue to make it less like gundam.

However that isn't even the point the point is you said it's silly to argue about copyright infringement. Which it isn't. If we didn't have it then there would be little motivation to come up with ideas because they would all instantly be copied.
@Korbei83: Yes how silly to argue about having your product ripped off. I hope someday you make something and another company just takes it and you make no money then you can tell us all about how silly it was -_-

The fact it is gundam is unrelated. It's a product and a brand.
Honestly these type of things always happen. I've lived in Japan for a while and I get pretty tired of people asking me things like is it true that dresses with pictures that make it look like you can see the girls arse are popular. Or all the people who say ''Oh Japan you can buy used panties in vending machines'' Which as far as I'm aware was only ever one machine in a sex shop. People just generally believe what they want to.

It constantly amazes me just how easily people accept things.

P.S. As of the time of my writing this Kotaku has EXACTLY 100,000 people liking it on facebook. CONGRATULATIONS!
@DeadnBuried: Wow a lot of replys. Think the most I've ever had in such a short time. I will get around to addressing all the points and thanks to everyone who replied but start from the bottom I guess.

I never said Sony shouldn't bother because the DS is more successful. However guess what both companies don't happily co-exist. Sony has taken MASSIVE losses in recent years and their gaming divisions can't be just doing well enough to get by. They need to be making big money.

Yes the PSP sold 60million units which is fantastic. But look at software sales on it. For a console with such a big userbase and that has been out for so long it's million sellers are pretty poor. No one is doubting the PSP success as a piece of hardware. But as a games machine I think it failed. The gamecube with around a third of the install base. Had more million sellers and it's best seller was bigger. Don't forget the PSP is a system where some developers stopped putting multi-plat games on it.

To me it seems pretty clear that people liked the PSP hardware but not the games. Unfortunately generally speaking Sony loses money on the hardware and makes money on the software. To me the NGP seems like a step in the wrong direction. More expensive tech, high development costs, less portable experience.

Someone mentioned the PSP audience having deeper pockets. When really the PSP has a horrendously low attach rate.
It's funny seeing everything repeat. This is just my opinion but it seems like Sony has made the exact same mistake as with the PSP which is that instead of trying to make a handheld they tried to make a console portable.

Everyone is getting excited about dual analogs, amazing graphics, console like experience etc. The same things they did about the PSP. But I haven't really seen people discussing the fact that this isn't what portable gaming is about. The most popular Iphone game? Angry birds. A game you could realistically pull off easy enough on the DS.

I don't think the majority of the market want a console experience on the go. Let's take MGS as there is a tech demo and it is one of the Playstations biggest games and uncharted since it is very popular at the moment. Instantly MGS as on the PS3 doesn't work as a portable game. Who is going to play a portable game where at any moment you could be in an hour long cutscene?

Uncharted. A visually stunning game, with amazing fidelty in graphics. Works fantastic on a big screen. But you suddendly have tiny ledges and bad guys in the distance, mixed into a jungle environment on a 5inch screen and suddenly the game is very very hard.

I mean the best selling DS game is New super mario bros with around 25million copies. A game that graphically is pretty simplistic. It also outsells the top 5 games on the PSP combined. Which all are graphically miles ahead.

I just don't feel like the handheld market wants a more console like experience but that is what Sony wants to give them.
I'm sure someone will take issue with this however not once (disclaimer: see end of the post) have I ever played with a girl gamer who didn't herself make a huge issue of the fact. I mean I used to play with a guy who was Scottish and the moment anyone asked if he was Scottish he would make a huge issue of it and so instantly people latched onto that and just ripped into him. There's really no difference. If you go into lobbies and make an issue of something yourself then people will do the same.

I remember one girl on Halo 3. Everyone on our team was just like ''Hey'' and all the guys just replied hey. Then the girl says hi and immediately goes into a speech about how she doesn't usually say hi because people treat her differently and blah blah blah. And she herself just made a huge issue of it while we were all just trying to play.

Never have I once treated a gamer any different because I thought they were a girl or I knew.

However I have been accused of picking on players because they were girls. When in reality they were just bad and attacked me so I beat them. If it was a guy then it wouldn't have been an issue.

However on the flipside of this and to make myself seem like an idiot. I'm sure I have played with lots of girl gamers who simply played and as such were impossible to tell apart from normal gamers. To those I say kudos.
@gigawings: Those subs seem wrong man. There's nothing about a box there at all. And looking at option 3 me and my GF (who's Japanese and I speak it) both looked at it puzzled. I wondered if it meant insert but she said that wouldn't really make sense. It could mean to cut someone off mid-conversation.
@DukeOfPwn: You do realise that in RE4 you used tanks of nitrogen to freeze a boss so you could damage it right? You know the same game that had regenerating enemies. The game that Dead Space is basically a version of in space.

Dead Space is a fantastic game but I would imagine the developers would be quite open that RE4 was a huge inspiration. It's pretty ridiculous to accuse RE5 off ripping of dead space.
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: Thanks man. Looking at the Kotaku pic I couldn't figure out what was wrong with that pic. When you can't see the person's body and can't see that there are no feet it is a bit more understandable. Still kinda a stretch though.
