FF1: make a party of 4 from 6 available classes
FF2: the more you use a weapon/spell, the stronger it gets
FF3: bare bones job system, affects stats upon level up
FF4: each character has unique abilities; party members join and leave as the game progresses
FF5: job system with subjob abilities
FF6: same as FF4 but all characters can be customized through what magic spells each character learns and stat bonuses at level up from equipped summon

<![CDATA[Velops commented on Iwata Foresees Wii Supply Constraints For Christmas, Again]]> The U.S. economy is in economic turmoil. Many economists believe that it will get much worse before it gets better.

Is it any surprise that Nintendo is wary about ramping up production in an uncertain economy?

<![CDATA[Velops commented on New 360 Dash "Reinvents The Console"]]> I wish someone would ask Microsoft why Xbox Live isn't free if gold members have to deal with unwanted ads on a completely closed service.

This dashboard update sounds suspicious to me. There is no way Microsoft would reduce their current ad revenue. The new interface probably has some insidious new way to shove more ads down the throats of Xbox Live users.

<![CDATA[Velops commented on Why Korea Matters: Learning from Difference]]> Elitism is so prevalent in the western videogame industry it just sickens me. You don't have to like the games made in Korea but you can't ignore their growing influence either. These games were never made for you so why get upset? Audiophiles have tried for decades to steer the public away from pop music into what they consider "real music" in a pointless crusade. The situation is no different with videogames.

Denying the progress Korea has made to break into western markets is a futile effort. Korean companies are here to stay whether you like it or not. Other than Blizzard, western game companies have failed to gain any significant ground in any markets outside of the west.

<![CDATA[Velops commented on Cliff Bleszinski "Can Guarantee" Gears of War 2 Will Be Longer]]> @FranUnFine: It's not your imagination. The truth is, many women are unaware that there is always an underlying tension between males in their interactions. Guys are always on guard not to cross the unmarked line between being a man and being a sissy.

Wartime scenarios tend to heighten this tension by forcing males into forging close emotional ties. This is problematic since many guys are hardwired to equate emotions with sexuality.

<![CDATA[Velops commented on Activision Under The Impression They Can Challenge iTunes]]> Guitar Hero has achieved the success it has because it hasn't been competing with iTunes. Guitar Hero is still a game, not an MP3 platform. Many people would never listen to many of the songs on Guitar Hero without the gameplay.

Elite Beat Agents is a fun game but most people don't choose to unwind by listening to YMCA. The gameplay immersive enough to override any music elitism people may have.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on Cliff Bleszinski "Can Guarantee" Gears of War 2 Will Be Longer]]> Epic is putting all of their eggs in this basket. After the lukewarm response towards UT3, Epic is desperately searching for another IP that will showcase the Unreal Engine in action to prospective clients.

<![CDATA[Velops commented on Mega Man 9 IS Coming To 360, PS3]]> It is clear that Inafune didn't take on this project for the money. It is a labor of love just like Megaman 2. You can't "get back to basics" without recreating the same conditions that led to the series becoming iconic. When you have been in the industry as long as Inafune, you tend to forget your roots.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on New Tales DS Footage]]> @mr_dimsum: There tends to be more experimentation with the less important Tales games. The big profile games in series always use the famous Kosuke Fujishima as the character designer for his signature art style.

The Tales games have traditionally stuck with anime cutscenes so it was a surprise that completely CG cutscenes are being use here. I find it clashes with the character art which will probably be used for the status screen and and dialog.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on Epic STILL Not Interested In Making Wii Games]]> I'm a bit burned out on these rhetorical questions about whether or not a developer will make a Wii game. The history of a developer should give you an adequate answer. Epic has a long history of putting their priority on pushing technology.

Unfortunately, prioritizing technology isn't a healthy approach late in the life of a console. Squeeze an orange as much as you want, but there is a limit to how much juice you can extract. Games that are successful late in the lifecycle of a console must rely on fresh ideas that are carefully executed.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on BioWare Intrigued By iPhone Possibilities]]> I don't understand this obsession with the iPhone as a gaming platform. It is more of a status symbol than anything else. There is no way the iPhone can be a legitimate gaming platform without substantial industry support. Right now, we are only getting wishful thinking from developers and technophiles without any serious initiatives.

<![CDATA[Velops commented on Crafting Compelling Characters for RPGs]]> "Tabletop RPGs have for the past 30 years created personalized story-based gaming experiences for players worldwide. Given their likeness with digital RPGs, it would seem there are some opportunities for leveraging these experiences."

There is a lot of wishful thinking from Anders Tychsen. The biggest strength of tabletop RPGs isn't the mechanics but the experience of playing with other people. The stories are memorable because there is a person running the tabletop game, tailoring it to the needs of the players. Computers have to follow strict guidelines while humans can break rules at their discretion.

Very little about what makes tabletop RPGs fun deals with game mechanics and customization. These elements are just there to inspire creativity. The unpredictable social interactions between players are much more important.

<![CDATA[Velops commented on Missing Handheld Gaming's Golden Age]]> @Emperor_Guam: FFTA2 is light on the story side. Gameplay is improved over FFTA while also adding in new content. Not all battles require killing everything in sight to win. The difficulty can also be set to hard mode from the start if you want a challenge.

Many wax nostalgic about the political drama of the first FFT. The problem is that 90% of all SRPGs follow suit. Without the story, FFT wouldn't have aged so gracefully.

<![CDATA[Velops commented on Professor Layton, Hookers and Coke]]> That was a nifty Sherlock Holmes reference at the end.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on Miyamoto's Secret To Quality Control: Less Sega, More Mario]]> It only seems like Miyamoto is only rehashing Mario games but that isn't true. The new IPs that he works on like Wii Fit don't have mascot characters. The closest thing to a new character he is responsible for are the Miis. The problem lies in the audience disliking all the new IPs he has created.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on Microsoft To Let Other Companies Build, Release 360 Consoles?]]> @creid: The problems were mostly the result of design flaws. These flaws were not caught during beta testing since it was rushed to market. A better hardware manufacturer would help but that is only half of the equation.

A good team of engineers and industrial designers is also necessary. Microsoft placed most of the focus on technology with the 360. Not enough work was done to address concerns about form factor, operating noise, and other annoyances that industrial designers would tackle.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on Nintendo Hooks Up Hospitalized Kids With Wii Fun Centers]]> @nick.soapdish: Why are you still holding a grudge? Nintendo has been working with this charity for 16 years. This is long before Child's Play and Penny Arcade existed. Can anyone still blame a company for not equally supporting two charities that have the same goal?

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on 'Metal Gear Solid 4' And The Lack Of Sad Games]]> Sad games are difficult for many reasons. All attempts at drama can fall apart due to the nature of games. A player may hate the protagonist such that the dramatic tragedy loses any impact. Humans have a limited tolerance for truly depressing atmosphere. This is a problem when games take too long to finish. Comic relief is very important to offset this, but good comedy is hard to execute. Videogames also have to deal with pacing since players are in control of how quickly certain parts of the game progress.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on GTA IV "Beginning Of The End" For Next-Gen?]]> @Raian1: The issue has nothing to do with a particular genre. The argument is about cost which does fit into your film and music analogy. Films and music that have the highest production values are positioned to target the mass market in order to recoup the hefty costs. Hardcore film and music lovers prefer indie projects because they are on the cutting edge despite suffering from low budgets.

This trend will eventually happen to videogames as well. Most big budget titles will be aimed towards the mainstream. Niche titles that appeal to hardcore gamers will be made using smaller budgets but not suffer from the creative restraints of appealing to the mass market.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on Sega Creates Robotic Girlfriend]]> Don't be fooled by the price, it's just a gateway to buying tons of expensive peripherals like the iPad to maintain it.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on Konami Creating Blue Dragon CCG]]> @Spoony Bard: The main problem with Blue Dragon is that the game feels too manufactured. Microsoft told Mistwalker to make a Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest hybrid. Talented developers can't truly shine if they aren't give enough creative freedom.

Games that follow established genre conventions are easily forgotten. Videogames are still an entertainment medium where the audience wants to be surprised. You can only do that with new and exciting concepts.

<![CDATA[Velops commented on Square Enix Final Fantasy Album Screws Up Human Eyes]]> This would make a great jack o'lantern pattern if it weren't so seizure inducing.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on Nickelodeon Expands Its Games Biz With New Divisions]]> Nickelodeon just uses their games as a means of advertising their programming lineup. Everything that comes from these divisions will most likely be glorified banner ads.

Virtual worlds are the new plague to hit the internet and I place sole responsibility on Second Life. Second Life was overhyped to the point that stupid executives were fooled into thinking that making their own branded virtual worlds would lead to bathtubs full of money to bathe in.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on "DS Hardware Demand Has Now Peaked Globally, Software Downturn To Follow"]]> The DS and Wii have proven time and again traditional thinking is not enough to explain their success. The industry has dramatically changed this console cycle such that the old rules no longer apply.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on Why Aren't There More Console MMOs?]]> @behemoth01: The text log still keeps a record so you can scroll back to read it. With voice chat, you can't filter through multiple people talking at once. Once anything has been said, there is no log that you can refer back to if you missed a message.

Text communication in MMOs is very important because you will be getting messages from your friends, your guild, private messages, and people in your general area. Very often it happen at the same time. This is very different than a game like Team Fortress 2 where you are only talking to people in the match.

There are many people in MMOs with the ability to use voice chat but prefer not to.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on How Casual MMOGs Are Making Money]]> The secret to the business model is low operating cost with a massive user base. It is very deceptive to calculate the average income per user per month. Only a small percentage of users actually spend any money at all on these games. The lack of a monthly subscription attracts enough players to make this a non-issue. A small minority of players that do spend real money pay a lot more than the monthly rate for a subscription game.

The high profit margin occurs because these games are designed to cut out goldfarmers and other shady companies out of the equation. Thus, players that typically use these services now pay the the game company itself for conveniences like extra gold without the threat of banning. Traditional subscription based games tend to demonize these players and as a result miss out on a lot of income.

<![CDATA[Velops commented on Mario Breaks From Princess Saving To Shill Some Hockey]]> @Does Not Equal: Dying is easy. Comedy is hard.

Sarcasm and subtley don't translate very well on the internet unless you have pages of text to set it up.

<![CDATA[Velops commented on PlayStation Store Update Raises Prices On PSP Downloadables]]> @Cam_Au: It is still a bad precedent to set since videogames are not like other commodities like food that have a short shelf life and limited/seasonal availablity.

<![CDATA[Velops commented on Interview: Pachter Says Console Sales Still OK, But Expect Holiday Price Drops]]> @SpishackCola: I find him entertaining as well. You might not know this but Pachter is a gamer himself unlike some of the other industry analysts. He is a big Desktop Tower Defense geek with very high scores. Some might complain about his overexposure but he is the only industry analyst that is deeply involved with the industry.

<![CDATA[Velops commented on Mike Myers' Mii A "Frightening Representation"]]> There is a resemblance to his Mii but I think it doesn't look enough like him. I'm guessing that his self-image is distorting what he should look like as a Mii. Everyone tends to have a skewed image of what they look like. I used a mirror when I made my own personal Mii. All it would take is a few minor adjustments to get a better likeness.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on Fitness Instructor Reviews Wii Fit]]> The exercise industry is very hypocritical. It is a multi-billion dollar industry that has failed to stop the growing rate of obesity yet continues to profit from it. The industry continually makes false promises about achieving amazing results in a short amount of time. It is completely out of touch with the average person.

Most people don't like to exercise because it feels like work. That is why people call exercising these days "working out". Wii Fit tries to make exercise fun without trying to make absurd promises about health benefits.

Running outside is free but most people don't find it fun.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on Mario Breaks From Princess Saving To Shill Some Hockey]]> @Does Not Equal: You are confusing the swimming pool game Marco Polo, the sport water polo and regular polo.

Polo is a team sport where people ride horses on a field and hit a ball using long-handled mallets into a goal. Water polo is a team sport that takes place in a swimming pool where players score goals by throwing a ball into a goal.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on Mario Breaks From Princess Saving To Shill Some Hockey]]> @Lazlo: If it's a Mario game why would they ride horses? Players would definitely ride Yoshis.

<![CDATA[Velops commented on Lunchtime With The Brothers Chap: Strong Bad's Creators Speak And Eat]]> I can't help but use SBCG4AP for this game. It's so catchy.

I wonder if the Poopsmith will make an appearance in the first episode.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on No Place For Hideo: MGS 4's Hidden Themes]]> @jamesb2147: I also believe the meaning is personal but that doesn't necessarily exclude the parallels with the videogame industry. Kojima has spent a lot of his life working in the industry so it is no surprise that some of those experiences would synch up with his own explorations on the issues of war. It may not have been his intent, but many creative works often have unplanned results.

I do have a problem with applying a western viewpoint to explain his motivations. We shouldn't forget that he is still a Japanese developer with distinctly Japanese sensibilities. It is a very slippery slope to assume that Kojima is criticizing the glut of violent FPS games set against the backdrop of war. Are gamers in the West trying to shoehorn their own opinions into MGS4? We can't really be sure since this is a common criticism of held by gamers in the West. Separating your own personal opinions from that of a creator is difficult.

<![CDATA[Velops commented on Jeff Bell Departs Microsoft, Shane Kim Gets Promotion]]> A high executive turnover isn't a good sign. New leadership means a new change in focus and strategy. There is nothing wrong with change when a business becomes becomes stale. Problems arise when frequent changes plant the seeds of consumer uncertainty.

<![CDATA[Velops commented on Colbert Invokes Katamari, Tetris, Mario While Mocking Japan's Election Coverage]]> It's kinda sad that the Colbert Report's smaller budget still manages to churn out a few digital graphics when necessary.

]]>
<![CDATA[Velops commented on Disgaea 3 Trailer (Now In English!)]]> @fuchikoma: The hype about stupid hard levels is very deceptive. The Disgaea games favor damage output more than anything else. There are lots of options on what method you use to deal the damage, but it all boils down to maximizing your damage output in the shortest span of time. Some people like this style of game, others don't.

The Disgaea games tend to be a mix of love it or hate it elements. It is hard to stay neutral about the series.
