<![CDATA[Comments from Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic]]> <![CDATA[Comments from Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic]]> <![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Frankenreview: Final Fantasy IV DS]]> @MysteryMachine: The problem you're getting into there is that a 2D version on the DS would be identical to the GBA version. Currently, the best and only hope for a truly slick 2D version is a PSP title a la Final Fantasy 1 and 2.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Frankenreview: Final Fantasy IV DS]]> @Fnor: Unfortunately your opinion doesn't speak for myself or the scads of other people who found Final Fantasy 8's story compelling. Sorry, but given what a trend it's become for everyone to shit all over everything post-Final Fantasy 6 it's gotten harder and harder for me to take these sorts of comments seriously.

And for the record, graphics are that important if you're trying to tell a story in a game. Believe it or not but some scenes do lose their impact through gratuitous use of chibi characters flailing their manimal paws. Why RPG enthusiasts have such a hard time conceding this to be true in their own genre while accepting it in others will forever perplex me.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Frankenreview: Final Fantasy IV DS]]> @Kuroomu: Meh. Stay on the "pre-Playstation" bandwagon if you must, but there's no arguing that Final Fantasy 8 has some of the most epic and cinematic FMVs the series has seen to date. Even 10 and 12 trail a bit in that regard...though not by much.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Frankenreview: Final Fantasy IV DS]]> Interesting. RPG sites are generally more forgiving with roleplaying games, but not so much when you futz about with a classic.

I've actually found the opposite to be true. Sites like RPG Fan have often posted reviews for which the term "bitchy" is a pale euphemism. Handheld RPGs specifically seem to catch the most flak.

It's both funny and sad that (J)RPG fans and FPS fans so often place themselves at odds with each other...as both genres seem to suffer equally from reviewers who expect the wheel to be reinvented with each and every outing.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Frankenreview: Final Fantasy IV DS]]> @ShadowFFVI: Given how long Square can take to get around to certain projects, you may very well be in luck. I wouldn't be surprised if the rumored Final Fantasy 6 remake winds up on the DS 2...which would likely be the rough equivalent of a Gamecube if Nintendo follows tradition.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on iDOLM@STER For PSP Announced]]> @quen: Sorry for the multiple posts. I also think the reactions of many in this thread are spurred primarily by what the obvious perceived health of the system is if Namco is going to the trouble of making the Idol Master a PSP release. I have my doubts about how many systems this will wind up selling, but then again you never know...

In either case a major third-party which had largely abandoned PSP development is now bringing one of its next-gen franchises to the system. That's pretty huge. And it speaks to what developers may be seeing as a "second chance" with a handheld market nearing saturation on the Nintendo side of things.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on iDOLM@STER For PSP Announced]]> @quen: It has nothing to do with the region encoding (or lack thereof), simply the language barrier. This seems like the type of game where a modicum of Japanese is required for better enjoyment.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on iDOLM@STER For PSP Announced]]> @fuchikoma: I think the idea of the PSP closing a 30+ million gap is more than a little far fetched. On the other hand, there's no denying that my favorite portable has proven that "late bloomers" can occur in the videogame industry...which seems to fly in the face of popular belief that the first year or so will tell you everything.

I do believe that if Sony committed themselves to dropping the price of the unit into the sub-$150 range and threw a bit more advertising revenue behind it in North America we could potentially see worldwide numbers push past the 50 million mark by the end of its life.

Still, as long as it stays this strong in Japan the likelihood of seeing more "Western-friendly" titles produced (and most importantly: localized) becomes much greater. Who knows? We may yet see Devil May Cry or Resident Evil on the system. DKS3713 and TGS '08 should reveal quite a bit about where the system is heading in Japan. (Which is really all that matters to me since Japan is still the Mecca for handheld development.)

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on iDOLM@STER For PSP Announced]]> I'd say there's no chance in hell for a U.S. release, but ever since Game Center CX for the DS was announced for the fall I believe anything is possible.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on CNBC's Jane Wells - Sony Is Winning, My Son Says So]]> @HertzaHaeon: Does your cat actively seek out the most difficult to clean things/places to puke on? Mine (well, one of them) sure as hell does.

And when I try to move her to a tiled or concrete floor before the show starts? She just makes a b-line to an upholstered chair, shelf, or carpet...gagging all the way.

Little shit.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Infinite Undiscovery: Jogging For A Long, Long Time]]> @RuneX21: I think he's referring to the split in market share between consoles in Japan rather than the number of of JRPGs on each one.

(And concerning the latter the PSP and DS individually decimate all three combined.)

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Rumor: PSP 3000 Features Built-In Mic, Already In Production]]> Eh...it's not that I don't believe there will be another redesign of the PSP, I'm just skeptical of the specifics anytime one of these more virulent rumors circulates.

I mean, wasn't Kotaku even itself even backing some pretty wildly off base "credible speculation" on what the PSP 2000 hardware specs would entail?

All I'm going to venture is that the next iteration of PSP is either going to be a massive overhaul or extremely minimal...I don't think it will occupy the middle ground a la PSP 2000.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Infinite Undiscovery: Jogging For A Long, Long Time]]> All I can say is this seems to be flying in the face of Square's "we want to support all platforms equally" spiel. Not that I'm really surprised Square's pulled a "Capcom" (i.e. promise big exclusive to PS3, make several exclusives for 360 in the meantime, and then go ahead and release PS3 "exclusive" on the 360 anyway). *sigh*

And while I realize Sony has dug a lot of their own holes this gen, Square (and Capcom...and Namco) must know that they do play a significant role in the relative success or failure of any console...and that contrary to Square's overtures about equal support, their actions seem to be saying they'd prefer Sony take it in the ass this gen.

All I gotta say is that if a Final Fantasy 7 remake/spin-off/sequel is announced for any other platform but PSP/PlayStation 3 at DKS3713 or TGS '08, my sense of aesthetics may take a permanent vacation. (I'll admit my game shelf speaks to a malady that goes a bit beyond OCD).

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Using The Force In Soul Calibur IV]]> With all of the attention the DS gets it amazes me that Namco hasn't bothered to put any of its 32-bit era fighters on it: Tekken 1-3, Tag (arcade ver.), or Soul Edge (Blade).

*sigh*

On topic, hoping someone in my neck of the woods breaks street date in a major way this week...

Anyone in the downtown Los Angeles area have any luck?

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on The Week in Games: FFIV on DS, Joint Strike]]> @Furysetzer: Funny. Of the two I actually thought part 4 showed its age more than part 6. That being said, if certain elements of the new game are a touch less "early 16-bit RPG" then I'd imagine this DS version will place Final Fantasy 4 back among my very favorites.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on The Week in Games: FFIV on DS, Joint Strike]]> Thank god "street dates" are slowly but surely becoming a thing of the past. I fondly remember being able to walk into a Babbage's(sp?) or Toys R Us and picking up a copy of Double Dragon (NES - still one of the best beat 'em ups ever) or Megaman X whenever the hell the shipment showed up.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on The Expert Bias: Reviewing for a New Culture]]> @EditorinChief: Probably because the games industry as a whole can't keep up with the network of geeks that produce/populate these blogs and message boards who constantly scan the net for any tidbit of news.

/End snarky reply ;)

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on The Expert Bias: Reviewing for a New Culture]]> @pandafresh: I would imagine because starting a publication (print or online) of your own takes large investments of both time and money from multiple people. And that the potential (high) risk of failure is not worth everyone's collective involvement.

Furthermore, gamers are frequently so damn fickle and bitchy that getting them to care is an uphill battle unto itself.

Truly, complaining about games seems to have upstaged the games themselves in this last half-decade. Genuine enthusiasm has become a commodity in all corners of the industry - from player to professional.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on The Expert Bias: Reviewing for a New Culture]]> @Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic: It should read "...And I use the term..."

Apologies for any other typos...I find I really have to hammer on my keyboard to get every single letter to appear.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on The Expert Bias: Reviewing for a New Culture]]> I wholeheartedly agree with the notion that games as they exist now are little more than entertainment for the hardcore demographic. An I use te term "entertainment" loosely...as I find it has less to do with genuine interest and more to do with stoking various fanboy fires to generate hits/advertising revenue/"street cred".

There's no denying that the structure as it currently stands is broken (primarily for the reason above), but I fear little can be done about it until games wholly filter out into the mainstream and every publication that normally features literary, film, performance, or music reviews offers opinions on gaming as well.

Related to the issue of reviews catering to the hardcores fetishes is the idea of "fair weather" reviewing. We've all seen it happen...a less popular console plays host to an excellent game which loses a few points because of its platform. Though I feel it's become more pronounced in recent years (Uncharted, anyone?), the practice is still as old as game reviews themselves.

Movies aren't faulted for the studio that produces them, likewise games shouldn't be judged based on their intended destination. But until games have moved entirely into the sphere of mainstream consumption this type of pandering (or exercising of personal bias) will continue.

<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Relive The Thrill Of Final Fantasy XIII's Xbox 360 Announcement]]> @muppetsausages: Or salt in the wound...either way.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe Impressions Of Crow Eating]]> I just couldn't get over how stiff the games felt...it really redefined "dial-a-combo" for me. That being said, there were a lot of elements of Mortal Kombat: Deception that I truly enjoyed and I'd like to see the franchise evolve with a more flowing style a la Tekken or Soul Calibur.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Bionic Commando Has Control Issues]]> I was happy this game provided Capcom/Grin an excuse to do a proper remake of the original NES Bionic Commando. My thoughts on the next-gen update are

A) I was worried that navigating with the bionic arm in 3D would be hard as fuck based on the early trailers...looks like I may be right.

B) This game is like the prize that comes in my Bionic Commando: Rearmed Cereal. It's a welcome bonus if its good, but no deal breaker if its bad...as I'm still in it for the sugary-sweet Rearmed goodness.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Damnation - One To Watch]]> The most recent issue of Play had a pretty lengthy cover story on Damnation. Looks to have some potential.

Side note: Even in a world of nerd-porn, the female protagonist's outfit is completely ridiculous...and this is coming from someone who, as a general rule, prefers slutty, trashy women.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on MadWorld - Black, White, And Red All Over]]> I still think Sin City's brilliant.

Regarding Mad World, its definitely one of several recently announced titles that's tipping the scales in favor of purchasing a Wii. I still think I;m going to wait and see what this year's TGS holds...since that seems to be where all the new software announcements I care about happen anyway.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Playing to Perfection in Mirror's Edge]]> @LittleBigPlaneteer: I'd say that is only largely true in a mass media capacity. As an individual, I've still found myself enjoying some pretty overhyped (and by the standards of many: under delivering) titles when they finally hit store shelves.

It's part of the reason why I'm largely withdrawing from any type of "gamer community" once again...my opinions/tastes/etc. just seem to be in direct opposition to the mainstream nine times out of ten. And you can only preemptively see "You're wrong. You're wrong. You're wrong." so many times before the thoughts and editorializing of others holds no value whatsoever...even as entertainment.

But I digress...I think you're correct to have apprehensions, particularly about an FPS (for lack of a better category). Titles in this genre more than most seem to have an unfortunate habit of turning out bad or just completely dull. Kind of like platformers in the 8- and 16-bit eras.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Flower - Petals On The Wind]]> Yes...my anticpation for this game continues to grow. I may be pissy about certain announcements from the competition and a lack of them from certain other parties, but damn if I'm still not satisfied with what is being done with the PlayStation 3.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Tretton Explains the Long Road to Home]]> HOME is important to Sony...next gen. I think that's the point many are missing. Sure it's going to be an asset to the PlayStation 3, but like Live on the Xbox vs. Live on the 360, the service needs time to grow and mature...and most importantly to become familiar to consumers.

Sony needs to start somewhere guys. Sorry if anything short of a finger snap won't do the trick for you. In the meantime I think they're growth in terms online experience is impressive...the new PSN video service (for example) is pretty damn slick.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Liveblogging Konami's E3 2008 Press Conference]]> A proper U.S. release of both Snatcher and Policenauts would be nice...hopefully on either DS or PSP.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on No, Valkyria Chronicles Isn't Coming To PSP]]> @brainwav: I hear ya. Frankly so is two or three games...or ten. Taking a plunge on one new system is easy, but I've always found that once my initial purchase is made my criteria for picking up a companion console(s) becomes pretty strict.

(Though there are a few franchises/wishlist items I would pick up another console solely to play. Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes was pretty much the only reason why I bought a Gamecube.)

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Sega: No Plans For Shenmue III, Seaman 2]]> I'd just like to see Shenmue 1 and 2 ported to a platform so I can finally play them the way they were meant to be played - with the transferable data.

PSP would be ideal just because awesome game + portability = extra awesome game.

Though I wouldn't begrudge seeing it appear on home consoles either. Considering that Sega has remade, ported, or done a direct sequel to virtually every title that appeared on the Dreamcast except Shenmue it makes me think they really do want to abandon the franchise and never look back.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on No, Valkyria Chronicles Isn't Coming To PSP]]> I'd actually chuckle if Sega decided to make this a muli-plat title out of pure spite for that blunder.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Tretton: Sony Considering PSP with Harddrive]]> @LittleBigPlaneteer: Agreed. Still, Sony could've done a lot more to make studios aware of that fact.

It just reminds me on the one hand of how much I love the PSP (I do think it's the best handheld to date) and on the other how maddening it was to watch Sony completely mismanage it at every turn for the first two years of its life.

I've likened it to watching a retarded child trying to solve a puzzle behind several inches of sound proof glass...no matter how much you yell and scream and gesture that square peg is still going into a round hole.

Even now there's a lot of room for improvement in Sony's PSP strategy, but it's still worlds better than the way they've phoned it in for the last couple of years.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on E3 Roundup Day 2: Sony]]> No arguments to most of what I've seen here. The only shock was Final Fantasy 13 heading to the 360. Apart from that swift kick in the junk to Sony, I didn't see anything really spectacular from any camp. Still, we've got a couple days left so who knows...though truth be told I find most of the announcements I care about come from TGS anyhow.

The only real high point for me was seeing Sony roll out the new PSP titles which at least means the system is safe from what I worried might be an impending demise.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Fat Princess, On PSN, Could Be Our GOTS]]> This game could've been a heartwarming tale of acceptance and understanding and the title alone still would've been worth the price of admission.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on God Of War III Debut Trailer]]> I do think Sony's missing a bet by not releasing a "blooper reel" starring Kratos.

It's a shame development costs are so high these days as I'd love to see more developers put their serious characters in gag games.

<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Ubisoft Announces I Am Alive For Spring '09]]> @wageofsins: True. But they at least have to be likable. My gut reaction would be to slap a couple of Dave Matthews bumper stickers over this guy's eyes and plunge him head first off the nearest precipice.

]]>
<![CDATA[Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic commented on Ubisoft Announces I Am Alive For Spring '09]]> Looks intriguing. It seems like it could have some promise. I can't say that environment really screamed "Chicago" though...and the (presumably) main character does look like kind of a choad. (Though perhaps I'm being too judgmental...I'm probably just biased from having to ride the L with too many genuine douches who were pretty much dead ringers for that guy when I still worked downtown).
