Unlike mammals where only the outer surface of the brain does the computing (which is why our brains have all those crazy folds in them, to maximize surface area) the Bird Brain uses the entire interior volume for computation, which makes them crazily more efficient.
They also have a much faster metabolism without ending up using too much energy as they balance it out by going into torpor (basically a mini-hibernation mode) whenever they doesn't need the extra power (like sleeping/resting/etc).
So they can basically overclock themselves for extra performance whenever they want.
Adding both of those traits would probably allow us to cram a lot of additional processing power into our heads without running out of available space.

Afaik there was an article here on io9 a (long) while back that some researchers discovered that was how some (large) species of spider (Tarantulas? I forgot) managed to stick to surfaces while climbing despite their larger size.
