From my understanding, the problems with porting MGS4 might have more to do with the way the game streams information. It streams most of the game-data (textures, etc) from the Hard-Drive, and it keeps most of the sound-data on the first layer of the disc. The Installation files, to my recollection are on the 2nd layer, since they don't need to be accessed immediately like sound data.

While its concievable that one could use 4.7 gigs of space per disc for the game data, that's also neglecting the slower-access speed of the 2nd layer on a DVD9 (effectively half-speed).

So either, load times will be absolutely atrocious, or assets will have to be downgraded to fit per-level.

Several people here have already stated "if a game has DRM I'll pirate it". Well, no. You see, you didn't buy the game, so you don't get to play it. Its akin to trying to have your cake and eat it too. If you dislike DRM so much, don't buy it. But that doesn't give you right to play it for free because you don't agree with a business decision. (Clearly, I think the PS3 should have 1 gig of total RAM, so I won't buy one, I'll steal one instead). What kind of bizzaro world logic is that?

Secondly, in my experience, in all forms of piracy, the people who "download to taste" something, almost never actually buy anything. Take (for an extraordinarily geeky example) Japanese animation, or anime. Many alleged fans will download entire series (currently available on store shelves), watch 50+ episodes to "see if they like it" then proclaim the ending was crap so they aren't buying it. The same applies to videogames. The sheer number of people I know who download a game, play through the entirety of it, then say "eh, I didn't like the ending" or "eh there's no replay value" is utterly astonishing.

The key to everything here is something called entitlement culture. People today feel they are entitled to things. They are entitled to whatever they want in life, and if someone won't give it to them with a minimum of fuss, they'll steal it, plain and simple. In digital piracy, there's no backlash because nobody wants to be "that guy" who calls his friends a idiot for having 40+ PC games burned onto DVD's that he downloaded.

Lastly, the whole "a download does not equal a lost sale" argument is essentially a red herring, primarily because there shouldn't be any downloads in the first place. I'll never understand this. A game is not good enough to spend money to purchase, but somehow several hundred thousand people are spending time downloading it, and playing it, so clearly there is some value to it. Its black and white. Either you feel the game is good enough to warrant a purchase, based on price, or you don't, and you don't purchase it. Developers wouldn't care about how many people were downloading games illegally if instead they just weren't buying them. That's when the game companies start to look at their pricing structures and ask "just how much can we charge for this game, and how many more people would purchase it if we dropped that price?"

Essentially, the counter-arguments are all rather flimsy excuses as to why someone deserves to get something they want, for free.

Just wanted to mention, the DVD9 discs that 360 actually have only about 7gigs of free space. MS uses 2 gigs alone on some sort of pointless copy protection.

Also, the read-speed that DVD9's provide is halved when reading from the second layer. In essence, its possible that the BD-DVD is going to be streaming data faster, since my guess would be the sound-data is all stored on the first layer of that.

The game is streaming from both the BD-DVD and the HDD at the same time, whatever monster engine Kojima put into it, it requires a lot of throughput, almost certainly more than the 360's DVD-drive can provide.

Furthermore, most of the games audio is not uncompressed.

One simply needs to look at the lower sound-quality, heavy use of blur filters and fog, and lower texture quality to figure out where the majority of the space was saved.

We know that the compression technology used in the PS3 is on-par with that used on the 360.

We know that the drive is marginally slower.

We know that the data on the MGS4 disc is compressed due to installation and audio format.

What exactly is there to not understand?
