<![CDATA[Sardu commented on Zero Punctuation Takes On You]]> On the whole I do tend to enjoy ZP, but as time goes by I think Yahtzee may be painting himself into a corner - aka going down that dark road towards becoming little more than a hack.

The only other thing I'd say is when you spend so much time picking out every single negative aspect of games you play, and claim to want to be involved in making games yourself one day... well whatever game you make better be the best fucking game ever created.

Yea, I'm looking at you right now too Penny Arcade.

<![CDATA[Sardu commented on Activision Get Heavy With Record Labels]]> As if artists on major labels aren't getting screwed enough as it is. Way to go Activision. Try and steal even more money from the lowest paid people in all of the entertainment business.

And really... it's not as though people hyped the games via posting the song lists long before launch - you know, so that people could see if music they know and like already is in the mix to make the GAME worth buying.

Thankfully Activision has absolutely no way of documenting a direct link to a song played by Player X on their games leading to an actual iTunes sale. Otherwise if this goes through, you can bet your ass that a LOT of bands will refuse to include their music in future releases. Just look at bands like NIN or Radiohead, who've opted to not work with major labels anymore due to the financial rape that occurs - I can all but guarantee that if Activision started asking NIN to pay them for being DLC for their game, Trent Reznor would tell them to shove it up their ass.

<![CDATA[Sardu commented on NPD: 2007 Sales So Far]]> Those numbers obviously don't account for subscription revenue, or else we'd be seeing Blizzard sitting far above everyone else looking down from their own private mountain o' cash.

I'll let you do the math there. :P

<![CDATA[Sardu commented on ESRB: Manhunt 2 is No Hot Coffee]]> I don't see how you could fail to see the difference:

"That content was not disclosed to the ESRB..." makes it pretty clear what the main difference / issue was with GTA.

If a hack to remove the blur in Manhunt were to somehow necessitate an AO rating, then I want to see an AO slapped on the Sims.

<![CDATA[Sardu commented on Cancelling Manhunt 2 "Never" An Option, Says Producer]]> @blodia: You need look no further than some of the Japanese developers like Illusion if you want rape simulators. Then there's the online games like Sociolotron where players can kidnap and rape other player's avatars.

In both cases the people making those games should be lynched. That goes for the people who spend the money that supports their development as well. It makes me sick that people consider that type of thing entertainment. Hopefully evolution will eventually selectively remove them from the gene pool.

Then I see things like this and I realize we're not all doomed to an eternity of torture and suffering after all! HoHo!

<![CDATA[Sardu commented on Atari Gets $10 Million, Couple Months Of Life]]> @shinkuu: My apologies, I'll try and remember to use the "/end sarcasm" tag at the end of comments like the one made above. For what it's worth though, I do agree that Nintendo's main success is based off of A) marketing and B) making games appealing to typical non-gamers. Otherwise they're basically selling yesterday's tech with a new toy thrown in the box that, though it does alter the way you interact with games I'm not sure it will stand the test of time unless some truly blockbuster games are created for the global market. Currently though, they're still basing primary software sales off of existing IPs and gameplay types so aren't necessarily pushing the industry as a whole in new directions apart from a slightly broader user base.

That's all my opinion though, and would never assume to preach that as the gospel truth. Forgive me for having one though, just like I'll forgive you for making a personal attack on me based on a harmless comment on a gaming blog, OK? :D

<![CDATA[Sardu commented on EA Layoffs Confirmed As "Somewhat Routine"]]> I'm surprised you didn't post any of the info that includes the fact that it's the majority of the UO team that's getting cut loose, as they're moving the entire operation to VA in December. On top of the major layoffs that just happened anyone who's not making the move to VA will get the axe just in time for x-mas. And no, it's not just QA testers but the majority of people still working on the project who hadn't already been pulled to work on Warhammer.

So no, this isn't simply routine. It's more a case of them preparing to let UO die out quietly as they shift their focus to the WAR project which they stand to profit from, unlike UO.

<![CDATA[Sardu commented on Atari Gets $10 Million, Couple Months Of Life]]> Atari simply needs to do something new or even a tiny bit innovating to break from their 70s / 80s roots. I mean it worked for Nintendo right? A couple of cheap gimmicks and a mountain of half-assed games later and they're somehow King o the Hill again. Atari, that could be you!

]]>
<![CDATA[Sardu commented on NCSoft Signs In-Game Advertising]]> @Icharius: Dungeon Runners is a free game already ... how much cheaper do you want it to be?

As far as the ads go, it really just depends on the game and context in which they're used. In Hellgate each of the train station hubs has advert. posters on the walls, but they're entirely unobtrusive and all have a somewhat weathered look to them so they don't in any way shape or form stand out or look out of place.

In a game like Dungeon Runners, there's plenty of ways you could post signs on the various posts and shop boards around town that wouldn't be too overbearing. Really, I don't see what the big deal is.

p.s. It seems like a majority of PC games I purchase all have that damn Nvidea add play while the game loads, yet oddly enough people never bitch about that even though it's in game advertising.

<![CDATA[Sardu commented on EBgames Taking Permanent Pre-Orders For Canceled Game]]> A quick phone-call confirms that the Best Buy here still has the boxes for sale, even though I'd given the store manager a couple of days time to follow up on the info that they should be pulled and why.

Obviously it's all part of a grand scheme to ruin the lives of gamers across the globe, and will ultimately bring about the fall of modern civilization.

]]>
<![CDATA[Sardu commented on EBgames Taking Permanent Pre-Orders For Canceled Game]]> I was in a local Best Buy two days ago that still has 10 copies of the pre-order boxes for GnH sitting on their shelves for sale. Before leaving the store I spoke to the manager and explained that they need to remove the boxes as it's a canceled project at this point etc. Their reply was something along the lines of it being out of his hands until he receives the info from the distribution center to pull them.

In other words this isn't just EB trying to screw customers over. There's every chance that they're simply following protocol and the listing will remain in place until word is given directly from someone at Perpetual that the game is no longer in production.

Or you can decide that EB is trying to screw people over and write alarmist articles without knowing all the facts.

If it's not ONLY EB still selling pre-orders then it's simply wrong to pin blame on them - If anything this is a management oversight at Perpetual. All you're doing here is shooting the messenger.

]]>
<![CDATA[Sardu commented on Frankenreview, Team Fortress 2 (PC)]]> For possibly the first time ever I actually wish I'd given in to the non-stop pre-order rants at my local game store.

After checking with 5 locations in the area, not a single one of them have, or plan on ordering stock copies of the Orange Box beyond customer orders.

I asked the GameStop manager about this and he said "it isn't considered to be a big enough title". I heard similar statements at other locations as well. He then proceeded to spend 15 minutes trying to get me to pre-order Crysis, which he says will be a massive game.

I checked with EB, Target, WalMart, Best Buy, GameStop - not a single one of them planning to sell the Orange Box for PC.

Has Valve even bothered to market the thing to retailers? Or is this just their way of trying to push people into using Steam?

]]>
<![CDATA[Sardu commented on Second Life, IBM Want Open Source Avatars]]> That's simply not going to happen until a company (or companies) create a game world that allows you to import your own avatars. Yes, this already happens with mods on a regular basis, but I'm talking about your core game. Think of it this way - if people could import their SL avatar complete with detachable penis into WoW something tells me there's be a mass exodus vs. it seeing a sudden influx of new players.

I'm all for open-source projects, and use quite a few of them on a daily basis. But if it were the future in gaming then why isn't GIMP the industry standard rather than Photoshop? Why isn't more effort being put into Blender to make it as highly polished and user friendly as the costly 3dsMax? People do in fact have all of the open-source tools they need currently to make entire AAA games, so why don't we see any being made and distributed for free?

]]>
<![CDATA[Sardu commented on Gods & Heroes Sleeping With The Celestial Fishes]]> From the bit I played of the beta, I thought the development was going along fairly well with consideration of the newly projected launch date.

I'm curious to see how the folks who bought Perpetual out are going to handle the fact that pre-order boxes have been on store shelves since August. Even if the Star Trek game has a green light all the way up until launch, I think there's going to be a fair few gamers unwilling to purchase another pre-order from them. And we all know what an angry, bitching, whining bunch the vocal minority of gamers can be. Speaking of...

@drunkentyger: I'm glad to see you're among those perpetuating (bad pun intended) the forum-jockey/troll, tinfoil hat wearing quasi-opinion that SoE = all things evil in the world.

The only game they've done wrong by is SWG, and if you'd bother to learn the facts the NGE was the idea of Lucasarts who forced the changes on SoE. SoE's only fault in the whole thing was not giving players warning before the changes took place, a mistake they've very vocally apologized for many times over.

<![CDATA[Sardu commented on How Many Exclusives For Each Console This Christmas?]]> Good for Nintendo. Sure, that's yet more quasi-impressive data without going into the titles that make up said list. But then once you take a closer look and see that the vast majority of those games take less than half of the development time / resources / effort to make it looks a tad less impressive.

I think there's a saying that seems to fit fairly well here, "Quality over quantity".

<![CDATA[Sardu commented on EverQuest: The Movie Grinds Closer To Reality]]> Actually I did a bit of digging to find out what the plot would center around.

Sure.Fire.Hit!

<![CDATA[Sardu commented on Diablo 3 Talk From Blizzard's Ex]]> Blizzard, by and large has seen it's success grow over time by going the safe route. Note the next to confirmed releases: A WoW expansion that follows the formula of the first, and Starcraft 2, which is mostly an updated/upgraded version of the original. Both are safe bets, and I have no doubts will make Blizzard even more mountains o cash.

Starcraft Ghost? Uses an existing IP but in terms of gameplay simply isn't a safe enough bet. Speaking of bets, anyone wanna bet on how many years until we see Blizzard create a new IP?

At any rate, I'd love to see Diablo 3 branch out and add to the gameplay in ways that Starcraft 2 doesn't seem to. I don't see that happening though since that version of D3 is already being released, only it's called Hellgate.

<![CDATA[Sardu commented on EverQuest: The Movie Grinds Closer To Reality]]> You know, it really would be funny in a tragic kind of way if the EQ film and the WoW film opened on the same weekend...

@mossberg: Don't forget all the scenes where the screen is blocked by a spell book for 5 minutes at a time while characters meditate!

Anyway, I'd be interested in seeing what they come up with - to be honest the lore of Norrath has a shit load more depth than the vast majority of video games out there, so at least the potential exists for a compelling story. They should hire Bill Trost at least as a consultant since he penned most of the lore way back when...

<![CDATA[Sardu commented on SCEE Explains PS3 BC Backpedalling]]> The local GameStop still has a MASSIVE PS2 section that pretty much dwarfs everything else in terms of shelf space. The PS3? A mere sliver of a corner tile at the back of the store. Maybe the damn consoles would sell better if retailers would bother to act like the thing existed. You have to admit it's sad that PC games have more shelf space (which is near the front of the store to boot) considering people pretend THAT doesn't exist either.

What does this have to do with the topic o this post? I'm not sure :D But that's OK. Yep.
