However, under the new dashboard you turn on your Xbox and if the DVD is in the drive you just press A to play, as the highlight defaults over the top left corner (even if it is smaller than the centre box).

Under the old dash you had to press UP to navigate to the Plat Disc set of menu's.

To me that is progress.

Yup, with the quarter-end shipment numbers released today, Sony are indeed around 4m behind MS at the same point in time and nowhere near close to your 10m "pluck a fugire from my rear" statement.
Remedy have many times commended about the linear nature of the game being more to do with not being able to tell the stpry they wanted and in the way they wanted and still keep the game open world.

The engine itself is still based on that original demo and that can be seen in those parts of the game where you see an area way ahead of you that you can actually visit, as opposed to titles like Uncharted 3 or Gears 3 where the vistas are just backdrops.

Apologies, I clicked on the wrong reply to.

Anyway, to answer your point - I'll accept that the 360 as of a week or so ago was sitting around 66m (though in the past when Ballmer has said "sold" he's often muddied the water and he meant "shipped to retail")

We know that at the end of the last Quarter Sony had shipped 55.5m PS3's

We also know in the 4-6 week "Holiday Period" they "Sold to Consumers" around 3.9m

We know in the US Sony sold around 250K PS3's in October (by extrapolating from figures we do know)

Again, we know by extrapolating NPD sales and deducting Black Friday week sales (as they will be accounted for in the "Holiday Period" Statement) that there were around 300K PS3's sold in the first couple of weeks of November.

So that's around 60m of sales that we "know" about, not taking into account 6-7 weeks of sales in the Asian, European and other regions.

So as I said, your "close to 10m" number was and is based in fantasyland, whether I replied to the right person or not.

"....1 million units ahead of the PS3 to something closer to 10 million...."

Excellent made-up figure. Exactly what these kind of discussions need.

"Genuine question here...has it really been a success?"

I suppose it really does depend on how you define "success"

Has it been a financial success for Microsoft? Well, if we take the stated sales for early in the year of 10million sold, assume that Microsoft make around $100 per Kinect sold, then you are looking at $1b onto their top line. I'd say that's a success.

Has the technology been a critical success? Gaming journalists are pretty divided over the usefulness of the core technology in games, but the mainsteam media are mostly positive. So I'd say that's a success.

Has it benefited the developers? With the exception of a couple of titles, most Kinect games have disappeared without a splash. I'd catagorise that as a failure.

Has it benefited gamers? That's a difficult one to answer (in my opinion) because it depends on what the expectation was in the first place. It's obvious that, as evidenced by the poor sales, there hasn't been overwhelming excitement about most of the games released, so maybe that could be seen as a failure by some. However, if a gamer looked at it as a specialist peripheral, similar to a Singstar Mic or a Rockbank guitar, then it may be felt a success.

Certainly for me it's now the go-to party toy, but also one in quieter times where my 4 year old can get involved in gaming. I'd say I've had value for money from it and that I think it's a great technology. But not everyone is me and other opinions are just as valid :)
Linking to the Tony Martin story to support your 'Daily Mail Reader' view of the world is somewhat disingenuous.

Rather than using force to protect himself, he shot a burgler in the back as he ran from the house. THAT was why he was charged and if it was truly self-defense he wouldn't have been.
I can confirm that my wife usually isn't all that impressed when I come first.
You need to get yourself one of these [saintmonicaopl.files.wordpress.com]

It's the only cure.
I'm generally not one for being all PC, but I must admit that I found this part of the post somewhat distasteful:

".......so folks with afflictions that give them tiny Tyrannosaurus Rex arms......."

Still, maybe it's just me so move along ;)
In response to the last question in the video.... is it my kind of game? Unfortunately not by the look of it, but it sure is pretty.
Though it's not clear in this Kotaku post, they're giving an additional 30 days on top of a day for each the service was down.
That would be next Wednesday then?
@Brian Ashcraft,

"In some crazy fantasy world, the PlayStation Network breach could carry a US$24 million price tag"

When I read that I thought to myself, "that doesn't sound like much" but then I clicked the link and discovered the craziness comes from the word "billion" and not "million" as in this blog post ;)

Maybe a quick edit is in order?
Who the fuck are Gate Five? I had a quick google to see what their development history is and could find nothing (I admit, it was a very quick search).
I too am concerned about the lack of official updates, and especially because those far too infrequent blog posts from Sony contain no information at all.

Either Sony PR are incompetent (and you don't get to be one of the world largest companies by having incompetent PR) or the situation is so serious that they haven't quite arrived at an angel in which they feel comfortable presenting it to us.

However, the kind of post here, a repost of an unsubstantiated anonymous forum post, is not helpful to anybody and just hightens (a) the concern among customers and (b) the vitriol in the fanboy wars.
I've found the "source". It's an anonymous poster on a minor messageboard who appears to hail from Turkey. As expected, he offers no proof of the statement or that he has any inside knowledge whatsoever.

Why people such as Diablojin feel the need to regurgitate such obvious nonsense is baffling, but I suppose a good rumour needs a bunch of willing sheep to propogate it.
Smells like a bollocks forum post from someone with no more knowledge than the rest of us.
