I'm reading this from my phone, can't check any links.
It's kinda important to know, since good localisations are still rather rare in Russia. Sometimes it's better to just stick with the original.

<![CDATA[MaxS commented on Interview: How Cloud Computing Changes Trion's Game]]> *thin-client -_-

]]>
<![CDATA[MaxS commented on Interview: How Cloud Computing Changes Trion's Game]]> If I get this correctly, they're planning to do a full-blown MMO in think-client format. Kinda neat. It's nothing new, really - just look at all the browser games out there. But I guess they're going for the scale of a "noraml" MMO like WoW or GW or anything, and if they're gonna pull this off, I'm going to be impressed (but I already am with Van Caneghem being involved). If someone doesn't know what a thin-client is - imagine playing a modern MMO without the need to install some 10GB client and the same amount of patches. Basically, the server does everything for you, so you don't need a fast machine to play, and in theory it could be the same on any platform.

]]>
<![CDATA[MaxS commented on Trion Also At Work On First-Party Van Caneghem MMO, PS3 Titles]]> I was wondering for a long time what had happened to Van Caneghem after NWC went down. If I'd be to judge what's coming from this Trion thing by the stuff that he did for Might & Magic and Heroes of Might & Magic (the first 6 and 3 titles, respectively), this is going to be awesome. I still think HoMM with all its add-ons is the best turn-based strategy game ever.

]]>
<![CDATA[MaxS commented on Just Spend £50 And Sing On A USB Mic]]> Hm, so you can use the SingStar mic, which comes with a PS3 game. In that case, since Rock Band is only out on xbox in Europe right now, you either have a PS3 as well as the 'box, or you lose out. Great.

<![CDATA[MaxS commented on AMD Holding Up Their End Of The PC Gaming Bargain]]> @dv8godd: I wanted to answer something to that, but got lost in a whirlwind of thoughts by the time I got to the end of your comment. But kcm117 has a point here - there's thousands of books available now on upgrading pcs, but most people don't even go to bookshops these days.

Anyway, I find it strange that I see people who'd complain today about PC games industy not doing enough to stay competitive, and tomorrow they'd moan about the first steps it's doing in the right direction.

]]>
<![CDATA[MaxS commented on AMD Holding Up Their End Of The PC Gaming Bargain]]> @dv8godd: A) Upgrading PCs is simple - you just get a part that you need, plug it in and install some drivers. The problem here is the huge choice of components that consumers are offered. When you've got a dozen of products to choose from, an average joe would surely get confused.

B) Most games that come out on PC don't require top-end hardware, if you don't put the settings too high. And still, even if you're using medium or whatnot you'll probably get a better picture than most console games.

C) PC never really was competing with consoles, cause it's not an exclusively gaming platform and you can do so much more with it.

In fact, gamewise it actually has a much broader scope than any console. No xbox live or playstore will give you the amount of indie, flash and open source games that the PC has apart from the usual big releases. And no console will (in forseeable future) give you the possibilities for modding and total conversions that give the games a much longer lifespan.

In short - PC gaming stands apart from the consoles and has it's own gaming world, a much more diverse than on the consoles. The only place where it's struggling against the products of MS, Sony and Nintendo is in the heads of some people who think that if it's not as good as consoles it's doomed.

]]>
<![CDATA[MaxS commented on AMD Holding Up Their End Of The PC Gaming Bargain]]> Those aren't simply stickers - to get one a pc would need to meet certain spec criteria and certification, so that what you get is really capable of running games at decent performance. Thus peeps will get what they need even if they dont know anything about hardware, unlike vista-(un)ready crap you get at pcworld. The specs for certification will also be updated twice a year so they wont fall behind.
PS Amd beats intel and nvidia at that it produces cpus, gpus and m/b chipsets all at once.

<![CDATA[MaxS commented on Ian Bogost on Advertising in Games]]> @Makoto: He was a guest editor here at Kotaku a few months ago

On the topic - I think Anarchy Online had one of the best (and probably one of the first) in-game ads, at least in MMOs. I mean, when I first saw Alienware billboards in the cities on Rubi-Ka (the planet where the game takes place) I didn't even know what the hell it was, and it didn't look out of place in an alien world =) Also, I think they had adverts of some gunmaker, but not sure about that. And taht was before they signed a contract with Massive, the online ads company.

<![CDATA[MaxS commented on Okamoto Warns Of Atari Caliber DS Crash]]> Here's a solution, Nintendo. You create a new division that makes DS Housewife Edition and software (I'm not calling that games) for it. And then you leave game-making and everything else to real developers. Deal?

]]>
<![CDATA[MaxS commented on Okamoto Warns Of Atari Caliber DS Crash]]> Why don't Nintendo just create a new division that would make a DSHousewife edition and spit out that kind of software (I'm not calling it games) for whoever wants it? And give us some actual games that are good...
