I don’t know anyone who had “Dragon’s Dogma 2 gets a whole expansion” on their Nintendo Direct bingo cards today. The game is over two years old, and Capcom hasn’t said or done anything to suggest it would be giving Dragon’s Dogma 2 the same loving treatment it did to the original Dragon’s Dogma with its Dark Arisen expansion. But it is, and it’s even also titling this new expansion “Dark Arisen” as either a joke, a nod, or a suggestion that this is going to be somewhat similar to the widely praised first game’s Dark Arisen expansion.

I loved Dragon’s Dogma 2 a lot. I’m stoked this is happening. But after poking my nose into my Dragon’s Dogma 2 save file just now, I’m a little worried it’s going to be too much work for me to actually play it.

For those who are unfamiliar or who, like me, have forgotten over the last two years: Dragon’s Dogma 2 only allows players to keep a single save file. When you load up the game, you can continue either from your last save, or from the last inn that you slept at. But that’s it. There’s no saving the game and then rolling back decisions you made if you screw up. That is admittedly half the joy of this game: Dragon’s Dogma 2 has some gnarly stuff that can happen, right down to horrible city-destroying diseases and character death, and it really ruins the effects of it all if you can just save-scum your way out of it.

But there’s a problem that arises when you add DLC into the equation. Now, we don’t know much about the new Dark Arisen DLC just yet. According to social posts from the official account, it will add a new region to the game complete with new characters, dungeons, weapons, and skills. That’s cool! I want to do that! We don’t yet know where or how the new region will be accessed, or if you’ll need to meet certain level or story requirements to get into it. In most games, this isn’t a big deal for folks like me who played the game a year ago, as we’d just boot up our near-the-end-of-the-game save and waltz right in.

But in Dragon’s Dogma 2, things are a bit different. I don’t want to get into specifics for fear of spoilers, but there’s a very, very significant point of no return at the tail end of Dragon’s Dogma 2 that, if taken, will leave you stranded in a situation that is…not exactly conducive to exploring a new continent. And there’s no way back from it. The only way to get back to the original state of the world is to start a brand new game from the beginning. With only one save file, if you went past that point of no return (and you would have had to, to get to the game’s true ending), you’re locked in.

There are a lot of ways Capcom could deal with this, and to its credit, it seems like it’s setting things up to make things as easy as possible for returning players. New Game+ brings you back at the same level you ended the game on, with access to high-level pawns and all the vocation levels and abilities you had before. You could just start a New Game+ and beeline it to wherever you’re going. But even if you do that, it’s still a pretty time-consuming process to get back into things. Dragon’s Dogma 2 has no fast travel outside of portcrystals which require the use of ferrystones, a pretty scant consumable resource, and those don’t carry over into your new save. So you’ll still have to run all over the map and probably knock out at least a few quests you’ve already done before to even get to the new content. That’s probably not a big deal for die-hard fans playing the game many times over, but if you’re a one-and-done gamer like me, it’s irritating.

I’m pleased to see that in the lead-up to this release, Capcom is adding a bunch of quality-of-life improvements, including improvements to fast travel and movement as well as non-descript “save system improvements” which could mean multiple files, though that doesn’t exactly help me now. The DLC itself will also add new customization options to the character creator for both players and Pawns, and new Arena dungeons scattered around the existing world will help break up the monotony of revisiting places you’ve already been if you’re replaying it. So Capcom’s clearly trying. The best thing Capcom could possibly do is make the DLC accessible very, very early in the game if you know where to go and are a high enough level to survive it, and make it super easy to get to either via an oxcart or something else. But for now, without that reassurance, I’m looking at my newly begun New Game+ file sideways and wondering if I should even bother.

Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s Dark Arisen DLC is out on October 9 alongside the launch of the game on Nintendo Switch 2. It’ll be included in the Switch 2 edition, and be a separate paid expansion on all other platforms. Quality-of-life updates arrive on June 10 (tomorrow), and more coming at the end of August look to ease your New Game+ speedrun to the DLC, so keep an eye out for those and get your Arisen ready for a journey to the frozen north, provided it doesn’t require another 60+ hours of game to get there.
