Very useful indeed, thank you. I actually knew most of this (I've been avidly following the game since it was announced) but this the sort of thing I feel should have been explored in this article.
I'm sorry you didn't like the first game, but this isn't a helpful preview at all. So there's a poorly implemented contextual button press that if you fail, you die? That is something that should be elaborated on.
Furthermore, this is actually a marked shift from the original game's tutorial; you are unable to die in that until you reach the boss at the end, and after that you aren't given a chance to retry. The level seems very short if you were able to reach the boss in only 30 minutes your first time playing through it.
What was the level design like? What was the sound design like? What was the enemy design like? How does it compare to the original graphically?
You're given a limited number of item based heals, as opposed to munching grass you find. Did that change the dynamic of combat? What was rolling like? Blocking? Magic? There's a jump button now, is that useful at all? Enemies respawn when you do; do traps reset as well?
Even if you had enjoyed your time with Dark Souls I'd be writing this, because I need someone who understood the nuances and mechanics of the first game to share their opinion.
I hope the online community continues to be just as strong as in the first one, despite being split over two platforms this time. It flourished even with the different Asian/US/Europe separation so here's hoping.
Cross region play sure would be great, though cross console probably won't happen.
Seems like Xbox owners will have something of an advantage with the co-op play as they'll have voice chat, but that can be worked around. Honestly, DS was at its best played alone, so you could really experience the crushing solitude.
Loving the scale and variety of the enemies seen so far, I hope they're common occurrences and as nasty as BP dual katana skeletons as we won't be getting world tendency this time.
This could be a real chance for Sony's PSP2. Provided it's not more than $300 and continues to be region free, it could be a genuine contender outside of Japan.
I won't be getting a 3DS til it's got a Pokemon title and some interesting exclusives, which'll be a while away yet.
@Xaif: Yeah honestly I can't say I grudge them the price. I just know that it is highly unlikely that I'll be getting the console for a very long time indeed.
@Killer Toilet: Wow, both of those options are massively unappealing :P
I would probably choose the former if only because I'm not especially competitive, but leaving games unfinished is like not reading to the end of a book.
...Though in this day and age, I could probably just check the plot synopsis on various wikis.
Second, I remember you being disappointed with the direction Blizz had chosen for Cata. Have your doubts been mostly assuaged, or are you just rolling with the punches and enjoying what you've got?
@Hey_Blinkon: Some DS games assume you use your right hand to hold the stylus. This means that it can be very awkward to play them if you're expected to move with the directional buttons and interface with the touchscreen.
