"Yeah my first question Brian would be what diagnostics have you run on the machine, and secondly how good your backup situation is, do you have a good solid HDD big enough to make a complete backup of the machine as is? I'd do your backup first (Time Machine works, though I have a preference for either CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper personally), then restart from your installation disc (probably the one that came with your machine, if handy) and run disk utility from that disk."
