Just as in Japan, "anime" includes any cartoon, like Spongebob Squarepants, but outside Japan, "anime" is animation from Japan, because there would be no point to borrowing the term otherwise. I would say that "otaku" implies a certain level of obsession that goes beyond what counts as "geek" though."
