7ucky commented on MADD Demands AO Rating for GTA IV @What The Geek: Yeah, I agree with you, but I think we're making slightly different points. I said I think the ratings system needs to be refined and tried to do so without going into too much, because, what the ^$%& do I know? I'm not a research or behavioral expert. So, without getting into too much detail, allow me clarify.

What I meant about merging them is that there shouldn't be a different rating that applies to 17 year olds and one that applies to 18 year olds. A 17 year old brain can comprehend and act upon the same stimulus that an 18 year old brain can. Also, I personally don't believe that AO games should be prohibited for sale in stores, but as I can't offer a solution to that can-of-worms we'll just stay away from that. So, I was assuming that if those where the current conditions of the rating system, I'd think the game should be a AO game.

To address your 'Halo' and 'Call of Duty' point, I don't think sex is the end-all-be-all determinant of what would be AO (in the ideal, hypothetical new rating system) and thus the rating shouldn't be solely associated with explicit sex. I think the level of reality of harmful and violent elements should determine the rating of game ("violent" in all sense of the word, not just violence). It's another can of worms though, right? What's worse: simulated sex or simulated violence?

Like I said, I don't know of the right solution, I just believe we can do better.

7ucky commented on MADD Demands AO Rating for GTA IV @El Patricko: Yes, you correct sir! Thanks, I'd overlooked that difference between AO and M. It's just a system that needs more refinement.

I'm with you and don't think the actual effect that a game's rating can have should be an influencing factor for developers.

7ucky commented on MADD Demands AO Rating for GTA IV Rabble rabble! Let's all get mad over something that has little bearing on most of us! It's kotaku tradition after all I guess.

First, unless you're 17 there's no reason to be complaining about this. You have the game don't you?? Then shut up and play it and quit acting like a group to prevent nearly-retarded teens from killing themselves and others is infinging on your rights. Because they're not.

I think this game should be Adult Only, but more importantly I think the ESRB should merge M and AO into one tweaked rating or reform their system because it's obviously too much of a contention point.
