Midway Sees $34 Million Loss in First Quarter

Developer-publisher Midway has taken another loss for the fiscal first quarter of 2008, the company announced today. The company saw $29.9 million in sales, more than twice its performance for the same period last year, but nonetheless, Midway's first quarter net losses were $34 million, while it lost much less - $19.8 million - in 2007's first quarter. China is a developing world superpower. At the same time, China is notorious worldwide for their IP piracy. Why should you care? As video games grow alongside China, so too will Chinese piracy of video games. Trust us. Chinese IPR chief Tian Lipu has a lot to say defending his country on the matter—that they've been mislabeled, that they're been actively approaching the problem and even that the Chinese are mostly stealing their own content. But then he dropped this little bombshell:

One generation is not enough here. If you ask me, I estimate it will take three to five generations.

Yesterday, we ran a story about stores in Japan "slashing" prices on the Xbox 360. This was not the case. The price cut is in fact a standing offer for a variety of items in certain electronics stores. Sofmap, and several other stores, offer a discount if you sign a contract with an ISP, an offer that is apparently tacked on to many popular electronic goods for sale in a store. More »
