Though hundreds of thousands of gamers swear by Amazon.com when it comes to ordering new releases or old favorites, I've never once ordered a video game from the popular online marketplace. Despite the allure of free launch day delivery and bonus credit, I've limited my game spending to local retailers. I didn't realize why until I finally caved and purchased SoulCalibur V online. More »

When they cashed in on the video game crazy nearly 30 years ago, Jerry Buckner and Gary Garcia didn't have to worry about licensing. Columbia/CBS records took care of that as Pac-Man Fever soared to No. 8 on the charts in 1982. Of course, the price they paid came later, in the form of CBS's insistence that they think up songs about Mousetrap, Frogger and Centipede, and the attendant decline in dignity. More »

SB Nation had a good thing going, picking winners of the first round of the NBA Playoffs using awful games like Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball and IN THE ZONE '98. But then the Miami-Philadelphia series was simulated using Streets of Rage. Streets of Rage is not a crappy video game. More »

This week marks my third anniversary with Kotaku, spending all of that as the site's weekend editor. On my third weekend here, my brother Fletch and I unloaded this post - "Two Brothers Meditating Upon Questions of Pac-Man," originally published April 19, 2008. A hypothetical calculation of Pac-Man's, er, metabolic functions, it became one of Kotaku's all-time humor classics. It's re-presented here, updated for the site's current design, with a gallery now featuring two alternate, unpublished images. More »

With no sequel, no reboot, no spinoffs - just one movie and one video game - The Goonies is a rarity, a phenomenon supported by two decades of nearly unexploited nostalgia. I've finally caught on. The Hoth-themed recruiting booth at Game Developers Conference last month was a clue. The e-mail about rare movie set photos seals it. It's the 30th anniversary of the Empire Strikes Back this year. Last year, the coder who wrote the Atari 400 port of Donkey Kong revealed it had an Easter Egg but it's "totally not worth it." Someone has gone to the trouble of finding it. More »
