Are self-doubt and uncertainty purely human traits, or do other members of the animal kingdom experience these feelings? A team of scientists made monkeys play video games because it's awesome. Oh, and to address the whole self-doubt thing. More »

The folks at the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) dropped us a line today to let us know they were sending a thank you gift to Sega for pulling advertisements for Samba De Amigo that featured chimpanzee actors. After the lovely, uplifting information PETA passed on to the publisher I can't see that they really had much of a choice. More »

Talk about a perfect fit. First rumored, then seemingly confirmed by a scan of a Nintendo Power cover, and now officially confirmed by 1UP through Sega of America, the delicious taste of monkeys and maracas will once again grace our television video game playing device as Samba de Amigo is coming to the Wii. The game is being developed by Gearbox Software of Brothers in Arms fame, so you know they'll do an excellent job with the World War II firefights, should they choose to include any. Somehow I doubt it. More info should be coming down the pipe on the triumphant return of musical monkey mayhem soon. More »

Ape Escape may have already gotten the anime treatment in Japan, but here in the States we'll be getting our first shots of Ape Escape animation in early 2008. Frederator Productions is teaming with Project 51, Hawaii Film Partners, and Showcase Entertainment to create a series of 38 2 minute long animated shorts based on the monkey bondage video game series. The shorts should begin airing in early 2008 on the Nicktoons network. Frederator has a production blog up gives some entertaining insight into the whole monkey business. Today's Onion-esque story comes by way of humor tech site The BBSpot, which "reports" that Bungie has decided to do what most companies these days like to do when they want to do things better and cheaper - outsource the problem to another country. The company will be recruiting people all over the world to play Halo 3 instead of spending the money to get programmers to redesign the AI to their liking. More »

Hunt for fake monkeys with integrated GPS. Bandai's Java-based Chimpan GPS for DoCoMo phones with satellite-navigation has players run the application and then physically search for the simian target. Players using phones without GPS log-in and act as assistants, apparently. That sounds boring! Game costs ¥315 (US $2.66) , but memories of wondering city streets looking for fake monkeys are priceless. Brian Ashcraft More »

Stray Bullet Games, a game development studio founded by key developers from Shadowbane creators Wolfpack Studios, has announced that they are working on a brand new massively multiplayer online game. They will be using an undisclosed 3rd party game engine to create the as-of-yet unnamed game, which will feature a completely original setting and theme. More »

Play-Asia.com has gotten posted sad confirmation that the Wii is completely region locked, and that includes Gamecube software as well. This means that while the innovative and imaginative Japanese are using the Wii to cook, learn new languages, and turn their children into walking supercomputers, we'll still be hurling our Wiimotes through our televisions like rabid monkeys trying to bowl. On the plus side they have tested the Gamecube Action Replay on the Wii, and it still allows you to play imported Gamecube games, so that's something at least. More »

When I started writing for this blog, I had one goal: post a video of a chimpanzee playing Ms. Pac-Man at least once. And now I have. Crecente, I quit! Florian Eckhardt More »

Little children have little hands. Using a standard PS2 controller can be more than a handful. Good thing there's the LiLiCON, a mini-controller for pint-sized players. Created by Japanese toy maker Happinet, the LiLiCON stands for "LIGHT&LITTLE CONTROLLER." There's also a turbo button to help along tikes that haven't mastered the fine art of button-mashing. The controller is covered with an Ape Escape and goes on sale July 13th, the same day Ape Escape: Million Monkeys drops. Fitting, because all children, like my son, are chimps. Brian Ashcraft More »

Watch A Chimp Play Ms. Pac-Man

We love primates at Kotaku. We love to watch monkeys and apes bathe cats, smoke cigarettes, quench their thirst via their own urine. A little bit of trivia for you here: Brian Ashcraft's favorite movie of all time is Every Which Way But Loose. Seriously, he owns this on laserdisc. That's why we're so pleased to present you with this fascinating video of a chimpanzee (a bonobo, possibly) playing Ms. Pac-Man. Monkey boy isn't really that good, but at least seems to grasp the basic concept. Maybe it's all just random luck. More »
