Square Enix's new Los Angeles studio is <a href="http://kotaku.com/5091308/square-enix-desperately-seeking-programmers-for-us-dev-studio">still hiring</a>, but they now have a small core staff of coders. To ease the new kids gently into the world of Squeenix development, the new studio is going to focus on downloadable games. <a href="http://kotaku.com/5094879/square-enix-la-working-on-downloadable-games" title="Click here to read more about Square Enix LA Working On Downloadable Games">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

Even before <em>Dead Space</em> is out of the door, the development team behind it are hopeful that they can carve a chunk (this may be literally true, given Dead Space's rep) from the game engine market. <a href="http://kotaku.com/5048213/dead-space-engine-hoping-to-dismember-middleware-market" title="Click here to read more about Dead Space Engine Hoping To Dismember Middleware Market">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

        <div class="FloatHack"></div>

Officially the umpteenth publisher and developer to do so, Square Enix announced today that they, too, will be licensing Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 for upcoming titles. What's it mean to you, fan of Slimes and androgynous protagonists? More space marines and Final Fantasy first person shooters? Doubt it. With the added cross-platform power of the UE3 middleware, don't be surprised to see fewer console exclusives from Square Enix as the company is rumored (read: expected) to adopt a more platform agnostic philosophy. <a href="http://kotaku.com/231358/square-enix-hops-on-unreal-engine-train" title="Click here to read more about Square Enix Hops On Unreal Engine Train">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

Sun Microsystems is <a href="http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1418&Itemid=2">getting into the MMO game</a>: with a little chest-thumping they just announced (probably quite rightly) that their "massively multiplayer" experience of running Wall Street's trading systems probably qualifies them rather highly for running an MMO's back end. <a href="http://kotaku.com/133993/sun-to-release-mmo-middleware-most-robust-evar" title="Click here to read more about Sun To Release MMO Middleware: Most Robust Evar?">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>
