In an interview with Canadian radio station KBS, Metallica's outspoken and occasionally loathed drummer Lars Ulrich explains — albeit vaguely — why his band is a Guitar Hero band, not a Rock Band band. He says that the gang behind Guitar Hero was "ready to step up on a number of fronts and it's been great," whatever that means.

"We had to make a decision, and it was one or the other, and we felt that Guitar Hero were more suited for what we were looking for," Ulrich said. You know, Lars, we may not be thinking of the same reasons, but that actually makes perfect sense. More »

Look. Before we go any further. I know. There's zero gameplay footage, there's zero announcements (because we knew the product itself was coming in 2009), and with no gameplay and a s-s-s-haky cam, there's always the chance it's a fake. But you know what? As a community service to anyone who is still a Metallica fan, here you go. This trailer is apparently bundled with Guitar Hero: World Tour, and comes complete with corny "Ride the Lightning" tag line. More »

Folks are saying that the sound quality of the new Metallica album Death Magnetic is rotten. The Guitar Hero version, however? Much better. (In case you missed the comparison, feel free to judge for yourself here.) Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has no clue what people are bitching and moaning about. Dude's been listening to the CD in his car, and it sounds "fuckin' smokin'". Continuing, Lars continues:

Somebody told me about [people complaining that the Guitar Hero version of Death Magnetic sounds better]. Listen, what are you going to do? A lot of people say [the CD] sounds great, and a few people say it doesn't, and that's OK. You gotta remember, when we put out ...And Justice for All, people were going, 'What happened to these guys, this record? There's no bass on it. It sounds like it was recorded in a fuckin' garage on an eight-track.' And now ...And Justice for All is sort of the seminal Metallica record that supposedly influenced a whole generation of death-metal bands. The difference between back then and now is the Internet.

The Internet gives everybody a voice, and the Internet has a tendency to give the complainers a louder voice. Listen, I can't keep up with this shit. Part of being in Metallica is that there's always somebody who's got a problem with something that you're doing: 'James Hetfield had something for breakfast that I don't like.' That's part of the ride.

Let me state it right here and let me state it once: We hate it when James Hetfield eats bran for breakfast.

Previously we brought word that the sound quality of the new Metallica CD is a disaster. Ted Jensen, head engineer at Sterling Sound, who mastered the album, allegedly responded to fan concerns, writing "I'm not proud to be associated with this one, and we can only hope that some good will come from this in some form of backlash against volume above all else." Metallica fans contend that the album is overly distorted, that clipping distortion from the album being mastered too loud, are making for bad impressions. However, the Guitar Hero version sounds great! The above clip compares both the CD and the Guitar Hero version. See if you can spot the difference — and remember, we're talking about sound quality here folks, not whether or not you actually like Metallica.

Metallica fans are pissed. The release of the metal outfit's latest album, Death Magnetic, isn't quite what they were expecting, at least from a sound quality standpoint. Yes, there is a Guitar Hero: Metallica game coming, and it's slated to ship by March 31, 2009. Yesterday, we learned that Metallica's upcoming album Death Magnetic would be made available as Guitar Hero III DLC the same day it went on sale in stores. As for Guitar Hero World Tour, well, that was all a little vague. It's a lot less vague today, with Activision confirming that the entire album will also be offered as DLC for Guitar World Tour, with the full-instrument support that implies, meaning your inner Kirk can finally be bossed around by your inner Lars while your inner James drinks himself to death. More »

Red Octane's Kai Huang said during today's Microsoft address that there'd be some Metallica DLC coming for Guitar Hero, to coincide with their latest album, Death Magnetic. Well, it's not coinciding with it as much as it is the album, with a note on Metallica's homepage informing fans that, on the same day the album's released in stores, you'll be able to download all of its songs in Guitar Hero III. They also say there'll be Death Magnetic content for Guitar Hero World Tour as well, but info on that isn't quite as specific. More »

Red Octane founder Kai Huang took the stage today at Microsoft's E3 2008 presser to toss out a few pertinent Guitar Hero related tidbits. First up, REM DLC is coming, and Xbox 360 owners will get first shot at it when it drops. Then Huang revealed that Van Halen and The Eagles will be completely exclusive to Guitar Hero: World Tour. No Hot For Teacher for Rock Band? Not fair. More »

The next artist to get top billing in the Guitar Hero franchise is Metallica, as Wedbush Morgan analyst Edward Woo uncovered the fiscal 2009 release of Guitar Hero: Metallica in a recent filling with the SEC. Said to ship by March 31 of '09—the end of Activision's financial year—it appears that the metal outfit will get Guitar Hero: Aerosmith style treatment with a heavy dose of heavy rock. Metallica's "One" was already featured in Guitar Hero III, with additional tracks already available on Rock Band. More »

Rolling Stone magazine caught up with Metallica last week at their Record Store Day signing event in California, where they interviewed drummer Lars Ulrich, demonstrating the sort of hard-hitting interview questions that have made Rolling Stone a shining example of everything good about pop culture journalism.
You signed a lot of Guitar Hero controllers. Is that cool?
In response, I'd imagine Ulrich propped his leg up on a table and scratched his chin thoughtfully, pondering the level of coolness he'd experienced on that day.
It's fucking way cool.
Whoa. You just don't get that deep with People magazine...people. Then Lars went on to ruin the illusion by making a valid, heartwarming point.
Our kids love playing Guitar Hero and Rock Band. It's awesome. There's something really positive coming out of video games. It's so cool to sit there and have your kids talk to you about Deep Purple and Black Sabbath and Soundgarden.
Wow, he's right. That is fucking way cool. More »

I wrote up a pretty nice three-page package on Rock Band and Guitar Hero 3 for the Rocky Mountain News before I left for Australia. Most of it is geared to a pretty general audience, meaning it's a lot of explanation, impressions and factoids, but one of the stories in the package is pretty packed with interesting details for even hard-core gamers. More »
