I don't know about you folks, but one of the most exciting bits of information I gleaned from McWhertor's masterful live blogging of the Microsoft presser during the Tokyo Game Show early this morning had to be the announcement of Arkanoid Live! Xbox Live Arcade is sorely lacking in block-busting goodness, and Arkanoid is the definitive block-busting experience, no matter what Atari tries to tell you. Add online multiplayer to the mix and I will be dreaming of paddle-ball destruction until the game's 2009 release. Check out these first screens of the game, and hit the jump for a fact sheet full of juicy info. <a href="http://kotaku.com/5060957/first-arkanoid-live-screens-deserve-compulsory-exclamation-point/gallery/" title="Click here to read more about First Arkanoid Live! Those of you adding Microsoft points to your account for the upcoming releases of Braid and Castle Crashers this month might want to add a few more than the 800 a shot we're used to. According to the official Japanese Xbox 360 blog, August 6th's Braid will be setting gamers back 1200 Microsoft Points ($15), with Castle Crashes weighing in at 1800 Points ($22.50?) - the most expensive Live Arcade game yet. Note that these are Japanese prices, while also noting that they generally coincide with European and North American prices. More »

As we announced on Monday, this week's Xbox Live Arcade titles are the puzzler RooGoo and Sierra's space shooter Aces of the Galaxy. Now while I've been following RooGoo for quite some time, Aces took me completely by surprise, mainly because it hasn't really been mentioned since it was announced back in October. It's almost as if Sierra forgot to market the game, but now they're making up for lost time with this trailer and a load of screenshots to help you decide whether Aces of the Galaxy is right for you. Go go Sierra marketing squad! More »

In case you weren't paying attention around the end of April, Sierra Online's Assault Heroes 2 is this week's Xbox Live Arcade release. The game picks up where the first left off, with our heroes realizing that the enemy the vanquished in their last adventure was merely a pawn of something much more sinister. The new game features enhanced foot combat complete with a dodge roll maneuver, the ability to hijack enemy vehicles (perhaps to ease you away from GTA for five minutes), and combat that takes you over land, sea, and eventually into the depths of space. Assault Heroes 2 hits the 800 MS point sweet spot and will be available early Wednesday morning. More »

This week's Xbox Live Arcade offerings are brought to you by the letter B! Something old and something we hope you'll really like are coming your way, in the form of the arcade classic Battlezone (400 Microsoft points) and Rocky & Bullwinkle (800 Microsoft points). One is a fast-paced collection of microgames featuring classic cartoon characters from ages past, and the other is vector tank combat with redone graphics and all-new Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag modes! Both utilize the Xbox Live Vision Camera for added functionality, so now it's up to you to figure out which is which. Good luck and godspeed! More »

It came straight from the horse's mouth. Well, almost. Famitsu reported that 5pb—a company working on LIVE ports of multiple titles, including some classic top-down shooters by Cave—is getting the cold shoulder from Microsoft. 5pb's Masaki Sakari explains:
Out initial plan was to port lots of good arcade titles to XBLA. We talked to IP holders of these titles, and persuaded them. We secured these licenses, and finally talked with Microsoft. There they rejected all of our proposals saying, 'We are going to cut down faithful arcade ports.' We felt so frustrated.
So was Microsoft just rejecting the top-down shooter and covering it with a polite, wider message, or are they rejecting arcade classics? I'm hoping for the former, because while I love original games, Microsoft has pretty much nailed their ports on LIVE. More »

Brain training comes to the Xbox Live Arcade this week in the form of Gameloft's creatively named Brain Challenge, 800 Microsoft points worth of brain exercises for children and adults, complete with multiplayer support for up to four players both online and off, and a special Creative Mode that allows you to relax and explore your imagination, a practice men generally relegate to the bathroom. Along with the brain games comes Bliss Island, a 400 Microsoft point game by Codemasters, which puts you in control of Hoshi the Zwooph, a strange blue creature with the power to blow clouds out of it's snout. Not just any clouds - puzzle solving clouds. Yes, this week is all about making you smarter and then letting you show off your newfound wits. Both games will be available early Wednesday morning. More »

Shmupcrafters Warashi have updated their website to indicate that the arcade to Dreamcast to Xbox Live Arcade translation of Triggerheart Exelica will be hitting Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday! Triggerheart is about humanoid weapons systems that just so happen to resemble cute anime girls, fighting to save humanity from the Ver'mith. You're good, they're bad, shoot them. Both ships have different weapons but both have the power to perform an anchor shot, snagging enemies to use as a weapon or shield. Not sure I am ready for this yet, as Omega Five is still kicking my ass on a regular basis, but I suppose when it comes to shmups, the more the merrier! The only problem? While it will definitely be out in Japan next Wednesday for 800 points, I am seeing now official word on other regions, though Xbox.com did just add a page for the game. Can you hear the music? Those thirteen notes that sum up the movie Tron so perfectly should once again be hitting Xbox Live Arcade next week as Disney readies the arcade classic Discs of Tron for release next Wednesday. Not to be confused with the Intellivision title Tron Deadly Discs - the sole reason my first computer was an Intellivision Aquarius - TDD is the game that featured one on one disc battles versus a computer controlled Sark. The game comes in both standard and enhanced flavors, with the latter delivering updated graphics and sound. All this, plus four (sadly offline) multiplayer modes: Classic Versus, Speed Versus, Co-op, and Deadly Disc Versus. Great job Disney! Now go make us another Tron movie! More »

SouthPeak games is entering the Xbox Live Arcade ring, partnering with Load Inc. - the creators of XBLA racing game Mad Tracks - to create Things On Wheels, an RC car racing title due out this summer.
"We've been looking to move into Xbox LIVE Arcade titles and Load Inc. wanted to do something brand new with the racing genre. This really appealed to us," said Melanie Mroz, CEO of SouthPeak Games. "Competing with real life remote control cars is great fun, so why not do it in a videogame?
So completely new! No one has ever done the mini-cars racing through large environments thing before, unless you count all those Micro Machine games, or the RC series, or maybe Mad Tracks for the PC and XBLA. Other than that - and countless other titles - no...never been done. Let's hear it for innovation! More »

Merry Christmas, old-school soccer gaming fans! A post over at the Codemasters Community Forums has confirmed that the remake of the classic Amiga (now there's a machine) sports title, announced way back in September of 2006, will be hitting Xbox Live Arcade on the 19th of December, just in time for the long holiday. The game features both a classic mode as well as an enhanced, prettier version, along with online multiplayer that has fans of the original quietly doing unnatural things to themselves in anticipation. For me, SWOS marks the sweet spot of soccer video gaming, with just enough soccer to be recognizable without all the complicated bits from later footie games that confuse my poor American mind. In short, hooray! More »

Every time I write about Undertow I have to spend a good fifteen minutes giggling over the developer's name. Chair Entertainment (heehee!) has revealed that their Battlefield meets Geometry Wars, Unreal Engine 3 powered shooter is hitting Xbox Live Arcade on November 21st, the day before Thanksgiving. If the game turns out as fun as I hope, I'll spend Turkey Day playing my PSP while the annual familial fight breaks out, wishing I were at home drowning myself in the 15 single player levels or two different 16 player multiplayer modes of Undertow. Lucky for me the other Thanksgiving contest my family participates in is the 'Who can leave the fastest after dinner' competition. The key lies in parking at the curb. More »

Hudson continues to painfully tease my shmup hunger, releasing bits of information on the upcoming Xbox Live Arcade shooter Omega Five while I continuously refresh my Arcade downloads screen just in case they decide to release the game itself while no one is looking. This week we meet Ruby, the scantily clad vixen who brings sexy to the battlefield, along with a vulcan laser cannon, reflecting laser beam, and a lightning gun. I'll let you decide which of those four is the most important. Ruby also has an alternate attack that sends out a satellite that can latch onto larger enemies, dealing damage as well as providing a lock-on target for her normal attacks. Where she stores this satellite when not in use is not something I really want to think about. Lovely! Game please.

THQ is gearing up for a big push onto Xbox Live Arcade. SpongeBob SquarePants: Underpants Slam!, which sounds like the worst Denny's meal ever, is expected to hit Xbox Live sometime in November, along with a new original title called Screwjumper, which is almost as suggestive. These two releases will be followed by another two THQ originals, Elements of Destruction and Rocket Riot. The SpongeBob title marks Nickelodeon's debut on the Live service.
"We're excited to add one of our hottest properties to the Xbox LIVE Arcade line up of games," said Steve Youngwood, executive vice president of digital media, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group. "SpongeBob has been a top kids' video game franchise worldwide, making it the perfect property for Nickelodeon and THQ to bring to this downloadable platform."
A downloadable SpongeBob title will be a boon to parents everywhere, saving them the time and humiliation involved with having to go pick one up at the store. More »

My opinion of the game aside, people are really digging Ninja Bee's Xbox Live strategy game, Band of Bugs, with its level editor allowing them to create and share levels with their friends. Once again the company is rewarding the stalwart fans of the game with an expansion pack - and this is one I may need to check out myself. The expansion is called Ninja Sticks of Fury, and adds the world's most deadly assassins to the mix. Players will guide a Ninja named Vail and their band of mercenaries across the snowy mountains beyond the insect kingdom in order to thwart a mysterious group of evil doers. The pack also introduces the snowy terrain type to the level editor so players can create their own winter wonderland to kill each other on. The expansion is now available via Xbox Live Marketplace for a measly 250 Microsoft points. With Halo 3 just around the corner, Microsoft has released a boatload of statistics regarding the state of Xbox Live and the 360, perhaps as a way to take a snapshot of before and after the game's gigantic launch week. The stats cover everything from Xbox Live play hours (3.2 billion, or 376,000 years), Xbox Live content downloads (over 290 million), games sold per console (6.3 on average), and just oodles more. The most interesting thing to me is that before this console generation, most of these stats didn't even apply to gaming consoles, so aside from being a big opportunity for Microsoft to pat themselves on their backs, it's an interesting look at how the face of console gaming has changed over the past few years. Hit the jump for all the numbers! More »

Hudson is set to release the second of it's Bomb-Up expansion packs for the Xbox Live Arcade's Bomberman live, and in addition to ten new characters, two new levels, new leaderboards, and a new game mode called Bomb Shelters, the expansion features a cameo by Destructoid's mascot, Mr. Destructoid.
"Not only is it an honor to have Destructoid represented in Bomberman Live, but it may also be the first time an online community has been immortalized in a popular gaming franchise," said Niero Gonzalez, Creator of Destructoid.com. "We're grateful that Hudson has extended our brand in this unique way, and invite all gamers to wreak havoc as the infamous Mr. Destructoid."
Interesting to see the gaming press actually represented in a video game, isn't it?

The world of Eternity's Child sounds very depressing. Once a vibrant planet teeming with life, pollution cause the ice caps to melt, flooding the planet and killing a majority of life. In the aftermath, the wingless began a campaign of genocide against the winged creatures fueled by jealousy. Mechanical automatons were created to make the world seem less empty, but as all robots do they eventually turned, destroying life instead of imitating it...or maybe they just learned from watching their masters? The social commentary is thick in this former Xbox Live Arcade title, now making the switch to the Wii and DS due to size constraints. You play Angel, an orphan whose wings were amputated to ensure his survival, as he sets out on a quest to find others like himself. Rescued from XBLA limbo by UK publisher Alten8, the Wii version sports completely hand-drawn graphics and orchestral soundtrack, as well as two-player co op. Eternity's Child could end up the most beautifully depressing game ever.

Labor Day weekend is so close I can taste it, and it tastes like half-price Xbox Live Arcade games! From Saturday the 1st at 5PM PST to 4:59PM PST the next day, Small Arms and Zuma Deluxe will cost you only 400 MS points, while arcade classics Gauntlet and Dig Dug will go for a mere 200. The sale was announced alongside next week's Live Arcade Wednesday titles, Cyberball 2072 and Fatal Fury Special. While better Fatal Fury games have come and gone, I cannot begin to count how many quarters I've spent over the years on Cyberball's robotic football goodness, and the promise of multiplayer over Xbox Live just sweetens the deal. Both will be available starting Wednesday for 400 MS points. A fine price for excellent football without any of the dog cruelty guilt. More »

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix has landed on Xbox Live Arcade, and it is everything you'd expect it to be. The game looks highly polished and crisp, with the odd exception of the actual characters you play who look like blurred versions of the same old sprites from the original PlayStation release. Still, 800 Microsoft Points is a small price to pay for SPF goodness. Joining it on Arcade this week is Streets of Rage 2 for 400 points, which proves that you should never make friends with Blaze and Axel because it'll only get you kidnapped. I'd be amazed if anyone returns their calls anymore. Hit up Xbox Live for demos of the two titles, or just skip that bit and download Super Puzzle Fighter. More »

As a long-time fan of the Bomberman franchise as well as one with a deep obsession for all things bunny related (don't ask), it is with great pleasure I bring you the announcement of Bomb-Up Pack 1 for Hudson's Bomberman Live for Xbox Live Arcade. The add-on, which weighs in at a modest 350 Microsoft Points, will feature two new environments (casino and zeppelin), a new game mode called Frag which allows you to set the number of enemies that need to be offed in order to win a match, as well as ten new characters. Among the new characters...Little Bomby Foo Foo. A bunny. With bombs. Y'all need to give me a minute here. Go read a press release or something. More »

You won't find any rehashes of decades-old arcade games popping up this Wednesday on Xbox Live Arcade. This week sees two all new original games kicking your ass at 800 points a pop. Street Trace: NYC is a new entry in my what could be favorite genre of all time: the hoverboard racer. Something about traveling at high speeds on a stylized plank while leaving a glowing trail in your wake appeals to me. Street Trace features several game modes, different arena and street tracks, and online multiplayer for up to 8 players via Xbox Live. Then there's Space Giraffe, Jeff Mintner's tribute to Tempest, with 100 levels of colorful shooting goodness with special moves and power ups thrown into the mix to keep things interesting. A couple of really nice titles for sure. Me? I'm just glad I don't have to use the phrase 'enhanced graphics and sound' this week. More »

Schizoid Debuts At GameFest 2007

Microsoft's GameFest 2007 is underway as we speak, and a game I've been looking forward to since I first spoke with its creators back at GDC in March is finally officially announced. Schizoid is the first developer created Xbox Live Arcade title built exclusively using XNA Game Studio Express. It is the product of Torpex Games, itself spawned from two of the top talents in the gaming industry, Bill Dugan and Jamie Fristrom, and I go into great detail with them about how they came to create the game in this post here. Dugan especially has a great way with words.
"We truly believe that if you and a friend spend two minutes playing Schizoid, you are going to ignore food, drink, your job and your family and play until they load you up on a gurney and head to the hospital. Schizoid is that rare game that comes along once every few years and we are very proud to make it our first release for Xbox LIVE Arcade."

Well my life is officially over. Not only does the Xbox Live Arcade get a version of Ecco the Dolphin for 400 points, complete with leaderboard support as well as enhanced graphics and sound, but also the sequel to the game I've spent the most time with on Xbox Live Arcade, Hexic 2<s>: Electric Boogaloo</s>! With all new pieces, new formations, and a new multiplayer battle mode, it is almost guaranteed that I will start having the hexagon nightmares again. 800 points nets you gaming's equivalent to crack cocaine this Wednesday. More »

Once again it is time to unleash the vibrating fingers of doom upon the unsuspecting public. This Wednesday's Xbox Live Arcade release is the game that had arcade managers bitching and moaning about replacing buttons every other week, Konami's Track & Field. The six button-punishing events from the original are spiced up with four player multiplayer via Xbox Live, voice support, enhanced audio, and enhanced graphics including special effects and hand-painted sprites and backgrounds - or you could just play the ugly older version. Your choice. 400 points is the price you pay to be completely humbled by my freakish tapping speeds this Wednesday. More »

As a man with a lot of surface area, I despise bugs. Mainly because they could be on me right now and I wouldn't know, as proven during last weekend's multiple wasp sting car ride fiasco...which I will not explain any further. Suffice it to say that after having nearly driven off an embankment thanks to the little buzzing bastards, I was ready for some payback *insert movie voice*...but to get revenge I would have to become that I despise most. Enter Ninja Bee's Band of Bugs. More »

And it would be the most glorious furniture ever, but I am speaking of independent game production company Chair Entertainment, who have entered into an exclusive deal with Epic Games to license the Unreal Engine 3 for just about everything the company is putting out, including PS3, 360, and PC games. The first title from Chair to use the technology will be Undertow, an upcoming Xbox Live Arcade title that will offer 15 single player levels and online co-op for up to 16 players - all delivered in a 50mb download. More »

Tomorrow might be seeing the sad return of the single game Xbox Live Arcade Wednesday, but if ever there was a game that could stand on its own, it's Mad Tracks from D3 Publisher. It's 3D racing with stackable power-ups and quirky tracks that let you drive twelve different mini-cars around giant environments. The game includes six races and nine mini-games for up to 4 players split-screen or via Xbox Live. More »
