I got a chance to swing by the SNK Playmore Suite at GDC to check out some of their offerings. Most of what they had going on on their screens were showings of their various game anthologies including Fatal Fury Battle Archives Vol. 2, King of Fighters 98 Ultimate Match, King of Fighters Collection Orochi Saga, Samurai Shodown Anthology, SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 and World Heroes Anthology. It's a brand new year for the Wii Virtual Console, and Nintendo is bringing out two relatively nice sized guns to get things started in this first VC update of the year. Star Tropics for the NES takes the top-down perspective of the original Legend of Zelda and adds a constant storyline divided into chapters to deliver one of the best gaming experiences on the NES, all for 500 points. Join Mike Jones as he sets off on a quest to rescue his famous uncle that ranges from the tropics to the very stars themselves, hence the title. It is pure goodness. Along with Star Tropics, this week sees the release of The King of Fighter's '94 for the NEOGEO (900 points) - the very beginning of the classic series that brings together SNK's most popular characters in a knock-down, drag-out, fight to the finish. It would seem that SNK's buxom ninja Mai Shiranui is popular with the Japanese gamer. Maybe it's the constantly flaunted T and A? That's just my theory, as I've begun to notice a trend in Mai's poses throughout her recent PVC incarnations. Max Factory took great care to expose both earlier this year, with Aizu Project being a bit more blatant about it. Now, Daiki Industry is giving it a go, artistically exhibiting Mai's obscene proportions with a nice arm shelf and a timely gust of wind. It's due out in March of next year for 14,700 yen (approximately $135 US) and will make for a nice centerpiece. Who's next? More »

Doki doki fever! An in-store trailer for Doki Doki Majo Shinpan has surfaced. As suspected, stills from the clip show the stylus touching clothed jubblies — doubt it will get any saucier than that, though! There are also collectible Doki Doki Majo Shinpan telephone cards appearing at stores around the country, too. Interesting fact: besides the English website, Chinese and Korean Majo Shinpan sites also exist. Does that mean the game is going global? Maybe! I would be remiss if I didn't make some mention of St. Patrick's Day today as it is... you know... today. I was also feeling hard pressed to tie it in to video games somehow so Crecente didn't have me drawn and quartered. A quick search of the internets for Irish video game characters didn't turn up much save Oswald and Krizalid from King of Fighters, one of the Cooper Clan from Sly Cooper and sisters Nina and Anna Williams from the Tekken Series. To say that SNK's Art of Fighting is pretty niche at this point may be an understatement. The 2D Neo Geo fighter saw its debut in arcades in the early '90s, hot on the heels of arcade smash Street Fighter II, but was rendered arguably obsolete by the company's own The King of Fighters series. After eleven KoF games, I'd be surprised if SNK Playmore revisits Art of Fighting in any new way. More »

Japanese toy-maker Yujin just released a King of Fighters Maximum Impact 2 "Girls Collection" that includes the likes of Ninon Beart, Mai Shiramei, Atena, Kula Diamond, B. Jenny and Lily Kane.
