The internet was rocked. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario and Zelda, reportedly said he was stepping down. It's one of those quirks of history that Nintendo, a company synonymous with colourful characters and fun video games, made its very first independent venture into the world of arcade gaming with...a board game adaptation. More »

It was apparently a contracted hit. Gunpei Yokoi, father of the Game Boy who failed with the Virtual Boy, left Nintendo and was working with a rival on a new portable game device. Yokoi had too many Nintendo secrets. He had to be out of the picture, say the conspiracy theories. He had to be silenced. More »

While to outsiders Japan appears a homogeneous nation (with only 2% of the population being registered foreigners), there are actually key regional differences in the way people behave and the language is spoken. Nintendo hasn't always made video games. It's over 100 years old, and in that time has made stuff like cards and children's toys. Oh, and also love testers, like this one, designed by the man who created the Game Boy. More »

This is a papercraft model of Nintendo's own late, great Gunpei Yokoi. Considering the amount of papercraft we see that's devoted to Nintendo characters, it's a strangely fitting tribute to the father of the Game & Watch, Game Boy, Metroid and Kid Icarus. Today, October 4th, 2007, marks the tenth anniversary of the death of Gunpei Yokoi, the Nintendo engineer responsible for inventing the company's Game & Watch and Game Boy hardware. Yokoi also acted as producer on Nintendo-developed software like Metroid and Kid Icarus with the R&D1 and Intelligent Systems teams. For those who haven't yet watched RobotBling's fantastic piece on Yokoi titled "The Greatest Inventor", I highly recommend doing so. More »
