Don't let the headline fool you. although this is technically a Japanese trailer, all the titles are in English with Japanese subtitles.
I recently got a chance to check out Umbrella Chronicles at a Capcom event last week and I have to say, despite McWhertors feelings to the contrary, I really enjoyed it. Given my famous inability to aim a gun with a regular controller, being able to just point and shoot was a lot of fun for me. I was also a big fan of the House of the Dead series and UC reminded me a bit of that except that you can use the nunchuk to look around. Let's just say I'll be more than willing to give it chance when it comes out. My zombie addiction knows no bounds.

Why does it take capcom or nintendo to begin pushing/using graphical capability?
Eh?
EH?
Colour me excited. This can't come out soon enough :(
"proliferation"- vocab word! two points! *swoosh*
Wow. I dismissed this game a while ago, but it looks like I'll have to add it to my now. Very impressive. I'm excited at the prospect of the light gun making a comeback thanks to the Wii.
This trailer has finally pushed this into the buy category for me
I rather have this game then the remake of RE4.
this looks fun.
"My zombie addiction knows no bounds."
I'm exactly the same... My heroin and Scopolamine addiction is like that...
... Well... if you can use the nunchuck to look around I am a little more interested.
But still I just don't think I can get behind an on rails resident evil game. Especially after RE4 turned the world on its head.
Also, if you can look around with the nunchuck does that mean single player only? Has there been any talk of co-op? Co-op with look controls on one screen would not work all that well and I won't hold my breath for online play. Is there any info about any gameplay mechanics that might make this feel like something other than dead-aim but on rails?
Just not getting a big warm and fuzzy about this game.
Would it be awful of me to point out that the trailer is tagged as 'Trailer 3'?
Would it?
Would it though?
I just want to see RE2 and RE3 done with updated graphics. That alone warrants the inevitable loss of £40.
@Garcian_Smith:
Updated graphics are ok. But if they could move the originals over to an RE4 style of control... I would send capcom a blank check.
One thing that still pisses me off about this game is the fact that everything in the game seems so desctructable EXCEPT the zombies, I mean, everything you shoot turns into pieces but when you shoot a zombie you just get a weak spay of blood... Come on! It doesnt have to be like "House of the dead" but at least they should show some damage to the enemies...
But obviously this thing wont stop me from buying this game...
Man those graphics are awesome.
Looking forward to this. Capcom rarely release a dud.
Although I love what I'm seeing for this game, I am getting tired of the way that scenes are merely flashed on the screen so fast that it's impossible to take it all in properly. Why can't we see scenes from other areas that last longer than two seconds?
GIMMIE THE BOX!!!!!!
Err..I mean... game.
Seriously, a) that looks hella swish. b) it actually LOOKS hella swish.
The impressive thing about this is that the backgrounds are actually being rendered in 3D, and still look that pretty. I already had this game on my to-buy list, and this seals the deal.
The UNimpressive thing about this is the backgrounds might as well be rendered in 2D, 'cuz you can't move. (I like House of Dead, and this looks fun, but man, I would SO have rather had a RE4 style game.)
Looks like fun. Resident Evil Zero was one of my favourite Gamecube games ever and I like playing light-gun games, so this seems like a near-perfect match.
In regard to that Zombie addiction, Flynn, just remember to wear protection.
So how come your Japanese editor doesn't review games? This game has been out for a while over there. Why post previews when he could be reviewing it?
Are you on rails or is this a free mover?
Totally bored with RE for now. Give me a game with some character.
@Darlan: If it were 2D you wouldn't see the walls riddled with real-time bullet holes or objects on said walls being destroyed dynamically.
@HarmanSmith: Capcom already had an engine on the platform that pushed awesome graphics, so not surprising they're in a good position to continue doing that.
@Qwizatblah: Yes there's been talk of co-op: there isn't any, for the reason you mention. At least in standard gameplay, I don't know if there are any extra multiplayer modes.
@ITR: I'd rather have both! Call me greedy. But sure, if I had to pick only one, I'd much rather have the new game over a remake of something I already played (even if I'm looking forward to that too).
I like Resident Evil, but this really looks rather lame. Its a lightgun shooter, sure, but even a lightgun shooter can look more interesting. The hit feedback, movement and everything, it looks extremely basic and simplistic. I have some serious doubts about this game, especially after RE4. They should have just reused that engine and gameplay instead of going lightgun.
Cool I'm ready for this one. This with dragon ball Z(the sweetest fighting game out right now for the WII seriously it's just like the show!), MK, Madden and yes the controls are that nice and now this. This is coming from a person with a G80 and some other top end PC games. Good presentation goes along way on this system. Man this summer is looking sweet. Me and my brother totally stopped playing sport video games because they took no practice(ie skill) yet that game is truly a breath of fresh air 4 real! About to finish up paper mario too! I'm not really seeing the tacked on controls issues? It's totally simple and doesn't get in the way
Man once you understand how the game is programed you can totaly dominate and the controlls being unreliable is actualy due to set up error. Hell dragon ball actualy tells you to sit closer if your too far away for the thin to be accurate! I'm really impressed with 3rd party use of the controller right now. It's actualy played in your classic gamer stands with your arms reasting on some thing just like real games.
What ever they do with this game I'm sure it will be fun. I was worried and hey if MK can get Wii control fighting right and have a steady accurate cursor then I got full faith in these guys. Now all I need is a B-ball game and some hockey! Soccer is already coming out. It's funny though but the Wii drought seem to be artificial because I got plenty of good games now after ignoring some of these review scores. I bet i could fix just about any ones Wii remote problems right now and having a good collection of game help show me ways developers are actualy polishing the Wii mote controls and waggle is actual the worst way to use this controller, Try that in MK and your a goner, try that in madden and you won't even be able to get the kick off going or throw a pass. The controlls are very presice and you will need to pay close attention to what they are saying really.
Gasp--- Now with all that being said IF EA and MIDWAY can get this right I got full confidence in capcom and who knows may be Ubi soft is seeing other have greatly out done them control wise and even graphic... it's very possible they can step it up.
Well now I guess I'll move on to metal of hunor soon and splinter cell just to be sure they are crap, far cry... I say give them another try and maybe but the first one deserves no love at all!
Sorry to jump subjects but if you havn't played these game and you still think the Wii mote is junk and un responsive just post here. It's crazy but it would halp a lot if the developers told you what parts of the controller they are using as some don't use the tilt controls for some thing while others are actually using the pointer.
I've been meaning to get around to this but I just went out and bough a whole mess of games and rented the ones that where know losers...LOL
You guys should try it. it's like when it works it really works every time... it's really really weird cuz I'll admit not every thing was strippers on ponies dancing in my front room if you know what I mean. Well may be you don't but It reminds me when I first jumped into FPS on the PC and sports ... it was hard there till I figured out the mechanic to it. Man I wish I could invite you guys over cuz you may not even like foot ball but madden is like Wii sports on steriods when you get use to it and it really works to!
Sorry about the long post but I'm pretty happy my set up is final completly free of issues and a lot of stuff that I didn't want to learn just started really working... It's weird but I gotta think MK for that! I'm a SF man so thats saying a lot!
Also too. to me this game has always been a light gun shooter except you used the lame analog sticks. You had some health management things to do yet those where not that heavy. You walked here and some thing jumped out then you struggled to shoot it , now I will actually have fun dropping about 12 rounds into these things. Yes you could move but did it really help? Also too if you look at RES evil 4's cut scenes you knew this was coming as the whole thing(this game) plays out like a cut scene now. I'm more of a fan of the shooting rather than the roaming which it seems this is what you guys want. Thats cool I'm getting this one and the other one next week too. It's getting really fun shooting stuff on the Wii and this is what I was hoping for. That was my first worry. Man did this system take some unlearning! Now I can enjoy whats coming down the pipe! If capcom takes the easy route then some one else will surely give you guys what you want as the developers are getting better with this system it seems. With control almost becoming a non issue they can focus on graphics again! Who knows? Hell the only game I haven't played now seems to be the games on the casual list. I though this was a casual gamers system? Weird? This thing is making me get more in touch with my hardcore side again and it feels good! It's like the jump from atari to the nes or some thing really! I know I know you may not agree but hey if your having problems with your controls then post here I'll try and help.
Finaly some thing to get me off quake 3!
..Thats no small moon!
It's a wall of text!
the game looks great!
But who wouldnt pay for a resi 4 - style remake of 2 and 3?
No-one. Everyone would buy it.
When I first heard about this game I was disappointed. I was hoping for an RE game similar to RE 4. An on rails, light gun game didn't sound good. This trailer has me excited. The game looks great. It seems fast paced and intense. I hope Capcom delivers a great game so I can add it to my already large Resident Evil collection.
I don't know, is Wesker supposed to be sexy, or something?
They keep showing us close-ups of him without him saying anything.
I get it. Wesker's involved in Umbrella, can I have some gameplay, please?
Also, I love those "VERIFY YOUR AGE" things, look at me, everybody! I'm 100 years old!!
First, let me say this game looks amazing. When I played the shooting sections of Rayman Raving Rabbids, I remember thinking how cool it would be to have a full on-rails shooter like House of the Dead come to the Wii. Clearly Capcom feels the same way now we can all have fun shooting things!
@Runna: I agree with you on two major things: 1) the Wii controls really are that good and 2) in many ways the Wii does feel like as much a "hardcore" system as a "casual" system.
I mean think about it: I remember in the old days, me and all my friends played our games on Commodore 64 computers. Then when the 64 was getting old, Commodore followed it up with the Amiga. The Amiga was a fantastic computer with _amazing_ jaw-dropping graphics (I owned both an Amiga 500 and a 1200 so I know), but it was expensive, had a crappy joystick, slow load times (off the 3.5-inch floppy) and you needed a computer monitor to see the graphics in full detail.
The NES came out. It's graphics weren't nearly as impressive and the lack of a keyboar meant it couldn't play as sophisticated games, but it was cheaper, had no load times, was simple to set up, had a cool, unique controller, easily connected to your TV and looked good sitting on top of your VCR. And it had great games that anyone could pick up and play.
Result? The Amiga floundered and the NES sold millions.
IMO the DS and GBA are also really hardcore. Great side-scrollers, fantastic RPGs, virtually limitless choices in any genre. Hey if you saw someone in the bus with an old 1989 black and white Gameboy, what would you think? You'd think "Wow that guy's old school!" Not "LOLZ GAEMBOI GFX R TEH KIDDY!"
Sorry kind of off topic but just my two cents.. hardcore gaming is about more than HDTV and online profanity..
Damn. Must...resist...buying a Wii. Jill in RE3 slutty outfit+arcade style shoot-em-up RE game= WIN.
What's with people writing essays?
=/
Awesome I get play RE0 and REmake again, but now its on rails.
I wonder who gets tired of zombies LOL!!!!
Anyways the simple fact of not having those "opening door loading" things , Im saying this because in the trailer they shot down a door, in the dinner room door exactly, OMG I hope this game rocks, especially since Billy Coen makes a comeback since RE:0 and I liked his badass style
DAMN, MAKE IT HAPPENING...CAPCOM
This is why you don't need a PS3 to have technically excellent graphics.
I've gotta take that last bit of the trailer with a pinch of salt though... 'Witness the end of Umbrella"..? I think not.
@aelfin:
If it takes you right up to before RE4, then they'll be showing you the end of umbrella, because in RE4 umbrella is gone.
I have a feeling we'll see a comeback of Umbrella in RE5. Maybe it's just wishful thinkging though.
I expect a full runthrough and plot-hole fillers from the series. There's still questions to be answered.
After watching this trailer I'm most likely going to purchase this game.
BUT plz let it be widescreen, and not fake widescreen like Super Paper Mario (you know where there were boders of about an inch on each side of the screen)
Hopefully it'll be as fun as House of the Dead arcade machines =D
@liamtoh669: Yeah I'm with you on that. I'm just surprise no one else has said it. I mean really every review is like hey the graphic could be better. Yeah sure but I watched my bro really wanting to buy sports games after playing madden on here. Me and him are dropping big money on PC for the up and coming direct z 10 goodness yet I would have to swear most people posting on here saying they have a wii may be don't have one or either they really don't like gaming all that much.
It's also weird to see people complaining about res evil being on rails when there is suppose to be a game drought. If all you bought was zelda and RPG then your not into gaming you more into D&D and the classic games or may be you should go rent more movies? I don't know... Suddenly I'm very cool with not having any known sequel on this system and I would rather see new stuff.
Hell I'm just happy to be gaming on a console and getting some thing new out of it. I was afraid it would be hard for every one and actually that seems to be the case with more reviewers.
I guess we are writing essays since alot of people claim the controls are floaty and un accurate which is very untrue. Wii sports and all aren't the best indicators of this either which is surprising to me because at first they seem to make best use of the remote. The other games out really do bring some thing to the table.
Also too Alot of fighting game ideas came to me and one way to make the play more intuitive is on screen character reaction to every thing. Like in MK when you press the B button they should take a stance then as you complete your motion you should see indicators in your characters movement to what you are doing. That would be very sweet ass you could fake moves then too!
Seriously though If you got problems I got answers to your remote problems... As for res evil... 28 days later type of zombies would be sweet! The story...well thats cool, it's alittle out there just give me some good old action!
One more reason why nintendo should have an internal online service... players do help out other players.
To all those people asking for an RE4 style game:
You do realize that RE5 is currently in development, right?
There was a long time ago when the graphics of those Gamecube Resident Evil games really impressed me, but they really look dated now, even by Wii standards. Seriously, I actually think that the zombies in RE4 might have looked better than the RE1 section there.
Anybody play that last Light-Gun Resident Evil game? The one for the PS2? You know, that steaming pile of shit?
Meh.
Not a fan of on-rail unless it's really different, like Killer 7. That game was weird as hell, so it distracted from the inability to turn off-course.
The best Resident Evil game to me was the remake of RE1 on the GameCube. Not only was it relatively gorgeous, but it scared the hell out of me. It was different enough from its PlayStation counterpart to make it actually worth playing again.
Resident Evil 4 was a far superior engine, definitely, but I was never scared. Not even once. It was disappointing in that respect. RE1 remade again with the RE4 engine? Instant orgasm.
Resident Evil 2 and 3 being remade with that engine would be exciting too (2 more than 3). Much more exciting than a compilation roller coaster with none of the suspense and excitement of its predecessors. Alas, Toasticus is right. Resident Evil 5 will likely deliver on that front enough on its own.
Hopefully Chris Redfield will get the same badassedness upgrade that Leon did in RE4. It would be a shame to see him upstaged by the newbie.
"My zombie addiction knows no bounds."
My thoughts EXACTLY!!
Honestly, I want to start a webcomic called "Just Add Zombies" kinda like you always hear just add water but instead with zombies! Because seriously, I heart zombies with a passion and I think anything is better with zombies in the mix.
o( ^.^)o
This really can't tell you anything about agmeplay. I would bet money on the destructable enviorments being set. A in you shoot a lamp it falls a certain way no ragdolls or anything cool like that. I'll play it but. It doesn't really look fun. I was excited about this game but. It really doesn't look fun.
It reminds me of House of the Dead (a series I love for its action and wacky dialog), set in the Resident Evil universe. Which for me, is awesome! With RE5 in development, this looks to be alot of fun and maybe clue us in on what really happened to Umbrella. And its got Wesker in it...Wesker!
Oh boy oh boy! Mmmmm, Zombies!!!!
