Just in time for Christmas! Microsoft has announced that 360 owners in the United Kingdom and Ireland will soon be able to download and enjoy to varying extents full movies via Xbox Live Marketplace. The service, which has been going strong for quite some time here in the colonies, is set to go live on December 11th with a wide variety of films you've more than likely already seen. Enjoy classics like Risky Business and Superman III alongside new hits such as 300 and Zodiac. Ooo, they've even got Demolition Man, starring Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, and Sandra Bullock, with music by Sting! If you've never caught that masterpiece, you're in for a real treat. Movies in standard definition will run 250 Microsoft points, with HD at 380 points. Now you can finally experience the joy of starting a full HD movie download and then realizing when it finally finishes that you're no longer in the mood to watch it. Hooray!
Top Films To Arrive In Xbox 360TM Owners' Living Rooms This Christmas Movies such as 300, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Good German and much more available to download LONDON - 4 December 2007 - Following the huge success of Xbox LIVE™ Marketplace Video Store in the US, where it has changed the way Xbox 360™ owners view and enjoy video, Microsoft® today announced that Xbox LIVE Marketplace Video Store will open for business in the UK on 11th December.Xbox 360 owners will be able to rent full-length films such as 300, The Good German, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from as little as 250 Microsoft Points (*ERP £2) for Standard Definition movies and from 380 Microsoft Points (*ERP £3.20 [1]) for High Definition movies. This is in addition to over 100 music videos currently available to download from partners Ministry of Sound, Sony BMG, PIAS and Vid Zone.
With this launch, Xbox LIVE Marketplace becomes the first video on demand service to be available in six countries - US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France and Germany - and cements its place as the worldwide leader in online distribution of high-definition gaming and entertainment content.
Robin Truchy, Director of Xbox LIVE for Europe, Microsoft Entertainment and Devices Division, commented: "Xbox Live Marketplace Video Store in Europe is all about adding to the ever-expanding number of entertainment choices that our consumers have on their Xbox 360. We want to give them the entertainment they want, in the format they want, when they want it and at an affordable price. We were already offering HD games, HD music videos and the option to enjoy HD-DVD format films, now we are offering HD movies to download and rent as well. This is very exciting for us and the consumer."
"Providing consumers with more choices and improving the movie experience at home is at the heart of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution's strategy and we're delighted to support Xbox Live for the European launch of their Video On Demand service" said Marc Gareton, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution Senior Vice President International." Microsoft has built a very successful platform, in both Standard Definition and High Definition, and we are happy to make it a home for our movies."
Arash Amel, Senior Analyst, Head of Broadband Media, Screen Digest, commented: "As Hollywood turns its attention towards selling digital copies of its blockbuster movies, the delivery of movie content over the open internet has become a key battleground for a broad range of service providers. Screen Digest predicts that the total European movie download market will be worth €350m by 2012, up from €17m in 2007[2]. The Xbox LIVE Marketplace Video Store, as the first multi-territory hardware-based online movie delivery service in Europe, is expected to be a European market leader for movie downloads. Consumers in both the US and Europe have already made it abundantly clear that they are reluctant to watch two-hour long films on their PC, instead preferring to view them on personal devices or most preferably devices that can provide a link to their large-screen living room TVs and home entertainment systems."
Xbox 360 gamers in the launch countries can access Xbox Live Marketplace Video Store with either an Xbox Live Silver or Gold membership and a broadband connection. More information about the content available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace Video Store can be found at: www.xbox.com

bah!!
still nothing for US customers living in foreign countries...
at least divx support works wonders...
Esta carne es de rata!
@icepick314: The 360 divx support is pretty bad though right now. Lot of files are not working correctly or not playing at all.
I probably wouldn't use this even is I was in the UK.
Now leave me alone, I have to wait for blockbuster to call me to tell me to take a movie back.
Bit pricey isn't it? HD is the same price as a rental from Xtravision/Blockbuster etc. and you don't get anything physical. I'd still probably use this for the odd great flick in HD, like Blade Runner/Bourne Ultimatum.
But most importantly in the words of Vernon 'Vern' Schillinger: "It's about fucking time."
Everyone forgets about us Canadians.
:' (
@NunianVonFuch:
True, you don't get anything physical, but you do have the "convenience" of waiting for it to download while you do something else, instead of having to leave your house.
250 Points = £2.13
380 Points = £3.23
That's not bad value at all.
Screw this, just download your films and such from places like Amazon. Lot better deals
@Kyle81:
yeah...older divx isn't working but newer ones are playing without a hiccup...
it's FAR better than before....
@IronsUK: Indeed. Now it just needs a few decent films ad i might actually use it!
Yay, not an amazing selection but at least it's a start. I hope that we start getting TV shows as well, stuff from the BBC would be good and a lot preferable than their own iPlayer.
@Kyle81:
I haven't had any issues yet and I've tried a ton of my files. Anyone else finding problems?
"Bit pricey isn't it? HD is the same price as a rental from Xtravision/Blockbuster etc. and you don't get anything physical."
@NunianVonFuch: That, to me, is more convenient. No need to drive/walk to the store to get it and return it, more of a chance that the disc is not scratched/unplayable, etc. Mind you, this is for rentals, not purchases. I still want physical media when I buy stuff.
This has UK written all over it. Ireland/UK movie list etc.
I was still a bit confused about the Canadian Video Marketplace so I went and found this: [blog.canoe.ca]
Looks like we won't be getting everything, but it is a long overdue step forward.
I heard that the Europeans have the fastest connections that side of Japan so maybe they'll get content faster. Either way, it looks like this service has made "someone" sour :p
I'm not gonna lie, Demolition Man is a guilty pleasure of mine, it's one of those movies I watch after a rough day, when I just want to shut my mind down.
demolition man! in the future they don't use toilet paper..
@StupidDufus: @FanDam: You can easily get the convenience for less with Amazon's 3.99 a month deal or Screenclick's 7.99e for us Irish folk. Both of them post the dvds to you for free and you just pop it in the post to return.
My point is you're paying extra for getting it direct to your Xbox rather than less even though there's no store employees to pay or middlemen at all.
@Voryn:
I second that sad emoticon. And from the looks of it they think they already have launched it in Canada. This was in the press release:
"With this launch, Xbox LIVE Marketplace becomes the first video on demand service to be available in six countries - US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France and Germany."
Last I checked we are still being shafted.
"Now you can finally experience the joy of starting a full HD movie download and then realizing when it finally finishes that you're no longer in the mood to watch it."
You can start watching a movie while you are still downloading it. Once you get to a certain point in the download, you are ok to watch the whole thing without interruption.
@NunianVonFuch: "Bit pricey isn't it? HD is the same price as a rental from Xtravision/Blockbuster etc. and you don't get anything physical."
And if you went with the rental, you probably wouldn't get it in HD, either. If you only want a standard def DVD, go with the standard def movie download for cheaper.
@drifter13:
Me too *shame*...
It was one of the first DVD's I bought - and the DVD transfer is rubbish. But I don't care, I just want to kill Edgar Friendly.
Finally. Now we can see something on Major Nelson's comments besides "Waaaaaah where is video marketplace in the UK?" As if MS were somehow keepnig it from them on purpose thus loosing valuble profit potential. (and as if Major Nelson would be allowed to comment on it anyway).
@NunianVonFuch: Not everyone has a rental store near them plus there's the hassle of travelling to the store, having to return the next day and no guarantee that the movie I want will even be there. There are things where having the physical product is better value, but when that physical product is only mine for a short period of time during which it's my responsibility to move it between locations then the virtual product is much better suited for the purpose.
@Rectangle: Yeah, but it's going to be a long time getting to the point where you can watch it uninterrupted. I've spent most of the day trying to get Psychonauts and I doubt I'll have any decent amount of time with it before tomorrow. When it comes to movies, I imagine I'll be sticking to quicker SD downloads.
Gorramit, I want movies in Canada. Would I ever buy them? Maybe. I don't like the fact that they've got to stay on my 360, but I also don't like the fact that I'm being excluded. ;)
I can at least commit to buying one movie once the service is released 'ere.
@Kuraudo: See my 2nd post.
Actually I'm going to go back on my earlier comment about price as I didn't realize UK-folk were paying 4.50 -> 6.75e for a rental from Blockbuster in HD or regular SD. It's about 5.50e in Ireland for HD / SD so the only real competition is the subscription services.
It's difficult to tell from this vantage point whether the service will consume the minds of earth men or merely enslave them. One thing is for certain: there is no stopping it; the marketplace will soon be here. And I for one welcome our new rental overlords and would like to remind them that as a trusted kotakuite I can be useful in rounding up others to toil in their underground points caves.

I really wish there was an easier way to make my post stand out.
Although I posted this above, a lot of you seem to be missing it. So here's a great big copy/paste.
This has UK written all over it. Ireland/UK movie list etc.
I was still a bit confused about the Canadian Video Marketplace so I went and found this: [blog.canoe.ca]

Hope these tags help =)
CANADA CANADA CANADA CANADA CANADA CANADA CANADA
That would all be good and fine if it were actually available in Canada! I get the feeling Microsofts left hand doesn't know what the right one is doing!
@bluecell:
Nice find Bluecell. Now i feel a little stupid!
no south park or friends tv shows?...hope it isnt long until the tv shows start appearing
and best of luck to Canada,who have been in the same boat as us in the UK...sure there are other countries who have gone without this service for the last year...but no one has moaned like us Brits and the Canadians..hope you guys get it soon
Hey, Demolition Man was a pretty fun movie. :)
@bluecell: Sweet thanks for posting that! Although seeing those prices converted to Canadian makes me not very excited anymore. Almost $10 to rent a new release high-def? I'm sure that's more expensive than the U.S version and because of the exchange rate that is just ridiculous. So we get it late and pay more (assuming I'm right about the price, I cant find the U.S prices). No thanks MS. The new divx player and aXXo will work just fine.
Hmm, I doubt that the download movies will have subtitles for the deaf. Looks like the HD-DVD drive is the only real option for me, then. Pity, it might have been a nice alternative to shelling out £100!
What a bunch of shit films. There's about three films I'd pay to watch on there, at a push, and I own them all on DVD or recorded off the telly.
Well I Guess America Jr. Will Just Have To Wait Again. Hey Look America Jr. People Who Live 6 km To The South Of You Gets All Of This Stuff But You Gets To Do The Waiting
No late fees, it just erases itself from existence as if it was never there. And you pay for it in points rather than buying the product itself, so it doesn't appear on credit card bills.
And somehow someone resisted using this as a platform for porn. The internet really has grown up after all.
Nah, Microsoft just refuses AO content on the platform. But they'd sell a few dozen million more consoles if they sold porn on demand...
Where's the TV series?
DRM'd, unable to watch how I want, won't be using.
They should be free with Xbox Live subscription
Any xbox insiders know if/when this is going to occur for Australia?
I don't have any photo id with my current address so the blockbuster won't let me sign up without it so this is perfect for me!
