Ace Combat 6 Hits A Million Downloads

AC6_boxart.jpg Microsoft just sent word that people, lots of people, have downloaded the Ace Combat 6 demo. It has been downloaded a million times worldwide since the AC6 demo was released back in July and gave players a chance to test out an F-16C Fighting Falcon in the campaign's first mission "Invasion of Gracemeria." The current Xbox 360 exclusive will be out in North America on October 23rd, in Japan on November 1st and in Europe on November 23rd. It will sell many copies.

  • I've played the demo. It's a very good demo. Have you played the demo? Because if you haven't, you totally should.

  • I played the demo, which kinda made me not want the full game and really ponder what's so special about the series :)

  • The graphics are great. And the game is typical Ace Combat, so it's good.
I still won't get it because there are too many other games out there that I want much more. Probably will get when it hits PS3 next year or the bargain bin on 360.

  • I read that as 6 million

  • Microsoft should probably learn this now , I thought they had but:

Demo download =/= Game purchased!!! Not even close.

This Xbox Live, where most of us download EVERYTHING when we're sitting there after we get tired of playing Snowbound over and over. My entire circle of friends downloaded AC6, guarantee none of us will purchase it though. Room mate actually hated the game.

  • I loved the over-the-top war movie drama-rama trailer of TGS. It's cheesy as hell. And I am swiss.

  • This demo almost made me hurl when my friend showed it to me on his 10 foot projector screen. Not even the Scream Machine rollercoaster did that. *Urp* Just thinking about it makes me want to...

  • Played the demo, plays exactly like Ace Combat 2-5, and doesn't look that much better than the PS2 versions. I used to love Ace Combat, but just like Dynasty Warriors, its just the same old, same old. 4 was the peak of this series.

And yes, free demo download =/= purchase, not anywhere close. I download every demo when it comes out, because it's a free demo. Sure every once in a while a game will surprise me and I may buy it, but most of the time, I play the demo, then go back to watching the Horton Hears a Who trailer. Damn that trailer is the most high definition high definition thing I have ever seen.

  • Even though i downloaded it and didn't hate it, no way im buying it.

@kryo: My guess is a lot of other people will have that same reaction. I'm not really getting all the attention being lavished on this game. Ace Combats 1-5 were pretty standard arcade-style combat flight sims, and most of them sold around 500,000 copies each. Good, but not really blockbusters. I don't really see any indication that AC6 will be any different. 1 million downloads? Nice, but that's for a free demo. A lot of people just download whatever demos come out for the system. It doesn't necessarily translate into 1 million games sold.

  • I actually preferred the Blazing Angels 2 demo... but yeah, I won't be buying either game.

  • That's very well done. It looks so fantastic, and it was truly something I was looking forward to when I was planning on getting the 360. Now that I'm on the PS3 instead (and not that generous on hard-earned money), I'm slightly hoping that the rest of us will have the option to enjoy this fantastic game at some point in the future.

  • Oh wait, it's just a timed exclusive! I'm content.

  • For some reason, whenever I look at Ace Combat downloads, the demo isn't there. Is it not in the same place that wallpapers, etc. would be?

  • Ace Combat 2 was the best in the series that I've played so far (Which is 1-4). Shall probably bother with this demo at some indeterminate point.

  • Oh it's just downloads of the demo? That title is very misleading. But I've watched the gameplay trailers and they look pretty good. I hope it will come to the PS3 later on.

  • Interesting...

  • Awful lot of hate for AC in this room. Demos DO equal sales. People like to try out games. You've got a better chance of converting with a demo than scaring off someone.

  • Definately getting. Hoping the Asian version is region unlocked as the UK dont get til a full month after NA

  • I'm surprised so see so much dislike for AC, I thought it was a pretty well thought of franchise. Maybe it's only in certain circles.

In any case, the demo made the game a must buy for me at least.

  • Already reserved. Multiplayer could be really awesome, an I would especially enjoy the co-op missions.

  • Image of muu muu at 06:53 AM on 10/17/07 *

I played the demo; it reminded me of one of those shooting gallery games, with a better soundtrack.

  • @brooza: Glad I wasn't the only one!

Didn't think much of the demo but it's not my type of game so bleh.

  • Beautiful game (at least if you don't get too close to the ground) but boring as all get out.

  • I can't wait for AC6. I actually forsook 'The Orange Box' for this game. I guess I'm benefiting because I never played any of the earlier AC games.

  • I think I'm going to pick it up on the (23rd I think it is). Don't forget that if you do plan on picking it up and you're a little more than the casual gamer type that you can sign up for the $15,000 championship now and find a partner. I'm pretty sure you have to do it before the 19th and then the offical signup comes online after that (however that works). It's teams of 2 and the winners split $30,000 I think.

I need a partner. It's not going to allow to multiple live accounts signed in at the same time from the same console to play online multiplayer (like halo, gears, CoD) ...at least that is what I was told. So, if you think you would like to give it a go and you aren't ultra-hardcore send me a message on live "Adam In Texas" or email adamseahornATyahoo.com

  • Haha, forget the link to register.
    [acecombat6.ggl.com]

If you think you might want to partner up go ahead and fill it out (just to cover your bases) you don't need partner info until after the 19th.

  • @Gian:

I thought the Blazing Angels 2 demo was sweet! It made me want to play the full game. I went to rent it and they didn't have it but they had Blazing Angels 1. Not as cool and I played until I was in that ice cave thing and didn't unlock one stinking achievement before I had to take it back.

  • ...and make that $3,000 not $30,000. Damn it.

  • They all probably did the same thing as me...

"Wow, a fighter plane demo. I wish I could fly planes and shoot stuff!"

    (Plays for an hour)

    "Wow, that was boring..."

  • Did they officialy anounce Ps3 or PC version yet:

  • The Ace Combat 6 demo is one of the most boring demos on Live. Seriously. It's a terrible, terrible demo! What were they thinking?

They basically enabled the God mode cheat, and infinite missiles/ammo. It's impossible to die (unless you fly into the ground), impossible to run out of ammunition, and auto-aim is waaaaay too forgiving. There is no challenge. There is no fun. The game consists of lining up an enemy plane on the horizon and pressing the "missiles" button. Over and over.

I was really looking forward to this game, because I used to really like combat flight sims on PC. But now that I sampled this casual-ass game, I have absolutely no plans to ever buy it.

Seriously, the demo is just terrible.

  • @cmsjustin: I think the demo is boring too. I haven't even played it for more than about 5 minutes. I swear Ace Combat 5 was way less boring...at least I remember it being when I played it compared to the demo.

Is there another control scheme on the game? I thought there was a sim version of the controls. They seem weird to me.

Actually I decided to check. That was Over G Fighters I played. Maybe I've never played a full Ace Combat game. Well, imports on the PS2 for a little bit but that's it.

  • @kryo:

Fact is it was never special to the Xbox demographic.
Any many 3rd party publishers that walked away from their staple market will be in for a rude awakening.

  • Hmmm, Over G Fighters only got a 6.1 on IGN but I thought it was pretty cool. They gave all the PS2 AC games like 8.8 or higher. Anyone who has played full versions of both that can tell me if I'll like Ace Combat? In your opinion how different are they?

  • Ace Combat has gotten boring to me because well.... it's the same exact thing over and over again. It was a while ago that they pretty much ran out of ideas for missions and such, they can only do so much with the gameplay and style of setting they have. Storyline presentation is only thing that really keeps these games going. But after 5, I really couldn't bring myself to play much of 0 or X, and after trying the demo on 360, I just still not feeling it.

The one thing that is attractive though is the prospect of online play.

  • As someone who has only played Ace Combat 3 on the PS2 I really liked the demo. I would surely get the game if Hellgate: London and Mass Effect wouldn't be released in November. But as it is, it unfortunately landed on my "must buy later" list.

  • I don't know, I have bought everyone of these games, but I am also a fighter jet nut. I can see where it may not be popular with every demographic. There is not a super amount of variance in the game play, but I love playing through it because of the jets and the air combat. I guess the same could be said for Madden. Not a super huge variance in game play, but the football nuts love it. I hate the fucking game. So I guess what I am saying is that Ace Combat could be considered the Madden for console flight junkies.

  • My Flight Stick bundle was secured with 30 bucks the day after I checked out the demo. I recently thought about not getting it because of the sale at Toys'R'Us but then took another look at the flight stick photo. I've been waiting for something like this to finally hit a console with good peripherals.

  • This is still the #1 reason why I want to buy a 360. But for now... Solo Wii Pixie.

  • Ace Combat doesn't really work well as a demo. It's more about the story, and for that you have to start at the beginning.

  • You don't get to play the game until you play it on Ace difficulty.. then the "boring after an hour" dilemma is easily remedied.

Ace mode makes it less of an arcade flyer and more of a combat flight sim with more action.

And yes.. one shot and you're a goner.

Sad it's a 360 Exclusive though. Still not enough for me to jump on a 360.

  • I was on the train today, on the Den-en-toshi line, and saw a commercial for this game on the LCD above the door. I didn't catch the very beginning of the commercial, but even at the end, I didn't see any sort of logo for Xbox360 (or Microsoft). Only Namco-Bandai.

Thought it was a bit odd. You would think they want to inform people which platform it's on. Oh well.

  • I've had the flight stick reserved since the day it was announced, I've loved Ace Combat since Ace Combat 04. Some of my most dramatic gaming moments happened there like accidentally being forced to fly through the tunnel of the game's final rail gun upside down. Epic.

  • Have it use my giant Steel Battalion controller and we'll talk. Don't feel like buying another expensive controller only one or two games use.

Actually, it would be pretty cool if I could use the mech controller with Ace Combat. Use the shifter as a throttle, pedals as rudders, plenty or buttons for whatever functions...

  • MS fail to realise that alot of people just download any demo when it comes out.

Although a million downloads is good, its not a good reflection of what sales could be.

After all I downloaded the VF5 demo.. but I have the full game on PS3 ><

  • you would think this is big news for developers. 1 million people checking out your game is a lot of coverage.

To the people who are saying 1 million downloads is nothing: How come we don't hear about more demos getting 1 million downloads?

  • @Kum0:

Does microsoft have an auto-download feature for demos? I know they do for the arcade demos. It would be bad if they were bragging about Totemball getting 6 million downloads or something (because it was autodownloading for everyone)

Seriously though, I'm glad other people download every demo that comes out at least long enough to try it. I recall getting the Bee Movie, Shrek, Cars, and who knows what else. It didn't stay for long though and I would never buy them.

  • @jacksinn:

I'm still on the fence as far as the flight stick goes. It does look sweet but when you look at it in a bigger picture like this one those red, blue and yellow buttons look really cheap for some reason. Also, the gray buttons on the throttle look like they don't belong almost. Well, to me it looks like they are just stuck on a little nub that is coming out of the control like they might come off after a little use.

Wish I could see one in person. I really like the quality of the official Microsoft brand stuff though and would hate to pick this up and it be the equivalent of a Gamestop brand 360 control.

Im just going to buy the flight stick for the hell of it, but damn and I running out of space in my place. Its
