Is the Xbox going the way of my sanity? The ever reliable Spong is quoting their favorite type of source, the anonymous one, saying that Microsoft hopes to rid stores of the Xbox in coming months. Retailers are being asked not to list the Xbox in any future catalogs. Spong goes on to say that there are only two million Xboxes left in the world and no more will be produced.
While I think the general idea of Microsoft gearing up for the launch of the Xbox 360 but cutting back on Xbox production, is a good one, I doubt the particulars. First off, if rumors about the lack of backwards compatibility for the 360 our true then there is no reason to completely stop making the Xbox. The longer you can keep a form factor around the more profitable it becomes, Sony proved that with the PSOne. I'm sure Microsoft won't turn a blind eye to all of that cash.
