Red Herring is reporting that the parents of a 13-year-old in Tianjin, China are suing Blizzard, saying that their son jumped to his death reenacting a scene from World of Warcraft.
The Chinese anti-Internet addiction advocate Zhang Chunliang is also backing the parents' claim.
The RH story didn't have a lot of details about what specifically the boy was hoping to achieve by jumping to his death, but in my mind it's no different from the slew of kids in the 70s who jumped out their bedroom windows with trashbags tied around their necks trying to fly like Superman.
I actually convinced my friend to do that when I was six or so. We were both supposed to jump, but seeing him squirm around on the ground with a fractured leg convinced me that it wasn't such a hot idea.
WoW is no more to blame for this kids death than TV was to blame for my friend's broken leg. Unfortunately, it looks like Red Herring has already decided that the game was to blame, judging by their headline.
