Back in April we reported on Blizzard's jobs site listing positions opening for a "next-gen MMO", which of course led to wild shouts of "World of Starcraft!", "World of Diablo!", and my personal favorite, "World of Lost Vikings!, while some speculated that the job listings were simply for work on a World of Warcraft expansion. The issue was brought up in the WoW forums earlier this month, which garnered the highly-revered blue response!
No, it is an unannounced Next-Gen MMO.For those of you with lives, the blue post on the WoW forums is the color of Blizzard staffers - in this case Drysc - and considered sacrosanct by the WoW community. While we still don't know exactly what it is, we at least know what it's not.And that doesn't mean an expansion for World of Warcraft either.
New MMO from Blizzard in the works [WoW Forums via GamesIndustry.biz]

finally, a warcraft killer :)
Hopefully we'll see some brand new IP. Yes, we all love the sequels to things we love, but everything is so.... tried and done.
Only another MMO made by blizzard themselves would have the chance of de-throning the power house that is WOW.
So, by "Next-Gen", they mean the X-Box 360 Pyramid, or the PS4 or the Wii HD, right?
I hope it's not something to do with Starcraft. I really want to play the next Starcraft and still have a life.
Finally Diablo 3!!!!
World of Guitarcraft?
This thing probably won't be out for 5 years. By then I won't care.
It doesn't matter what IP they use, whether it's a new IP or not. It's Blizzard. The game will:
1) Be delayed at least 3 years from its initial rumored date
2) Be kept in secret for years
3) Be an immediate favorite for Game of the Year
4) Have a mirror-like level of polish
5) Suck away the life of anybody who tries it
Point #5 is based solely off of the WoW phenomenon, but come on, it's a Blizzard MMO. It's going to be fantastic.
Blizzard teams up with Midway for world of cruisin' on the Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!
...kill me now.
contrary to popular opinion i think it is possable to make a pretty good Starcraft MMO, granted it would have to have a lot of differences compared to WoW but its not totally out there.
given that starcrat 2 is in production i think the most likely candidate is diablo
Guitarcraft: Rocking the Zerglings
@smitty1123: I was wondering basically the same thing. "Next-gen" may just mean new, but it does sort of imply that it will be made for consoles. As far as I know, computers have never been classified by generation.
Gotta be a Diablo-based MMO.
Because Diablo 2 was practically an MMO to begin with. I mean, it clearly wasn't, and you didn't have to pay per month, but it had that sort of structure, where you'd go on adventures and seek out all the rare items, and team up with people online and do your thing.
@Automageddon:
When Joe Satriani posts at [www.satriani.com] his posts show in blue as well.
Coincidence? Hmmmmm.
this news post is missing a major piece of the equation i think, actavision owns blizzard.
next gen MMO? my money is on 'world of tony hawk... craft'
@callahan09: WoW is already practically Diablo. With orcs and elves.
Ooh well thats some interesting bit of information.
Finally a Stacraft: Ghost MMO, sweet!
It would seem that Starcraft would be the logical choice considering that a Diablo MMO would be just like WoW. It is not impossible to consider an entirely new IP either since Starcraft II is already confirmed. Either way, with all the money Blizzard has in its pockets I just hope we get a game in the next 5 years and that they do not pull a Valve.
*cracks knuckles*
Vikings with Guitars: Touring Khanduras While Building Spaceships to visit Auir after Slaying the Horde.
Starcraft MMO would be nice because it could be a better version of PlanetSide. A Diablo MMO wouldn't draw the attention of mainstream gamers and wouldn't be nearly as successful as WoW. On top of that I think Diablo is crap.
Grand Theft Tauren?
As I recall WoW wasn't long after Warcraft 3, and Blizzard has a lot more money now. I would think that doesn't rule out a Starcraft MMO...
World of Lost Vikings would rule your souls.
But I wasn't aware that Blizzard had anyone but WoW whores on staff...
You're telling me that the starcraft2 site is meant to do more than mock us?
It'll be World of StarCraft.
Let it be known now that I totally called it ^_^
@Copesetic: Computers may not be classified by generations, but MMOs are. Very commonly used vernacular in the MMO community.
@tetracycloide: Activision don't own nothin'. Vivendi owns both their asses.
World of Rock'n'Roll Racing.. please Blizzard!
It is hard to fathom what will happen to my life if a Diablo MMO came to be.
If it's a Diablo MMO, I hope they don't announce it long before it comes out.
That will be a very painful time for me.
@hondo:
Whoa, whoa, whoa there....
It'll be Universe of StarCraft! World of StarCraft sounds no fun!
@KaneTaker: Activision and Vivendi are about to merge.
I second that movement for "StarCraft Universe"
World of Starcraft has to happen. Why?
World of Warcraft came out not long after Warcraft 3.
Starcraft 2 is coming soon, and it looks like they're putting new life into the series. An MMO would be icing on the cake.
And how sweet it would be to gank noobs with my uber Protoss zealot with +50 armor and stat buffs!
@Keeko_ca:
Most of the time when its speculated I hear it called "Worlds of Starcraft" which was clever the first time I heard it...
not so much the 65382nd time.
Now that they're part of Activision. Expect "World of Warcraft 2", "World of Warcraft 3: Legends of Rock" and "World of Warcraft 4: Modern Combat".
@tetracycloide:
Actually, it was a merger, they said they weren't going to mess with each others business, and Vivendi is the majority owner. Ergo, Blizzard owns Activision (sort of, not really).
Anyhoo, Space of Starcraft, we shall call it Sauce.
@ampillion: I dunno. The core of exploration is similar, but the core gameplay is totally different. At least, it seemed so to me. Different level-design, different enemies. I suppose that makes a bit of difference? I dunno. I played a free month's worth of World of Warcraft and didn't even get through the whole month before I was bored of it. Seemed... for some reason nowhere near as fun as Diablo II. Even if WoW were free, I'd still not be playing it. For me, nothing has ever topped playing Diablo II online in that sort of genre.
@callahan09:
The difference is in the loot. The looooooooot.
I think a Starcraft FPS like MMO would be fun. But I'd never play an RTS MMO or a Starcraft RPG MMO.
So, does next-gen mean...current gen consoles(Wii,360,PS3)
or the generation after our current gen consoles. Yeah, that's a long time. But knowing Blizzard, a long time is no surprise.
Also, could this be related to project "Hydra"?
[kotaku.com]
Maybe it's the same thing..
Starcraft Worlds
Did he REALLY use "Next-gen" and "MMO" in the same sentence? That's gotta be one of the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
corporate rule #1 - "If it´s profitable, let´s do it again and again and again, until it´s not anymore and everyone get´s sick of it, but I guess that will never happen."
Anyway, the announcment will probably happen in a year and the game will be released in 4 years from now, so I won´t bother looking for info right now.
The World of Murlocs, a secret in development...
or Starcraft: Ghost World (its bound to come out in some form...)
Oh, that's so COOL! Maybe we'll see a Warcraft MMO! That would be really cool...I'd love to play as an orc and run around and say to random people "stop touching me" in my best orc impression.
This may be the coolest thing evar!
I'm hoping for a more PVP based MMO for Starcraft. Just thinking that players of one of the three races being able to actually change their universe based on their actions makes me hard like nothing else.
Planning raids on a planet controlled by zerg and actually being able to TAKE the damn thing....yes please
Starcraft Universe is my pick, and I think 2010-2011 is the earliest we can expect it. I also expect it to be head and shoulders above WoW, not just graphically but gameplay wise.
@Automageddon: Yes an MMO dedicated to people who learn how to make guitars. It will take off like a rocket. Confirmed!
Great,more lives lowered into the fiery dooms of a MMO...just what we need
Dude, if they ever make another Lost Vikings game, I don't care whether it's an MMO or what, I will play it.
Hopefully they aren't making a stand-alone next generation MMO. WoW was so popular because it had a nice backing of RTS games. Stand-alone MMOs have a more difficult time because they don't offer a familiar enviornment that people are just itching to dive into.
It probably won't be a Starcraft MMO either because, based on Blizzard's history, they are more likely to release SC2 and then an expansion pack before even thinking about an SC MMO.
Im hoping WoS - That's world of Starcraft for you non mmoers out there ;)
world of starcraft...gaahhhh i really hope it's not that cuz...my life would be over!
World of WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2013!
And its only 5 years away!
God god god no, don't fuck up Diablo 3 by making it an MMO.
D:<
They said it's not a WoW expansion, not that it isn't WoW 2. That said, my personal hope is that it's Universe of Starcraft.
@Pezdispenser: you mean vivindi owns (kinda, but not really) activision, who happens to publish blizzards games. =)
My money is on SC because it already has a well fleshed-out universe. Diablo has a nice little story, but the world is small, and in a lot of ways it's been incorporated into WoW. SC on the other hand already has three clearly-defined species, with separate factions within those species and a fairly large amount of story material to draw from.
Plus, they've got to be sick of the fantasy setting by now.
I'd put a side bet on something we've never seen before - because they're also probably sick of the same major IPs for the past 10+ years.
A wow killer!
Oh wait...
It's like that philosophical/theological logic question about omnipotence.
"Can God make a rock so big that he himself cannot lift it?"
"Can Blizzard make an MMO so good, that Blizzard itself cannot make a better one?"
@hondo:
@Keeko_ca:
Super Starcraft Galaxy.
Yay! Another to consume souls.
@Eldragon:
Agreed.
The Starcraft universe isn't much designed for quests and solo-exploration.
Like, seriously.
How could you even be a Zerg without the Hive or a Marine without an army backing you up.
"Oh, my species may be in danger, but I have to gather rock shards to power up my gauze rifle!"
