So what if the Wii cannot handle the awesome 'next-generation' physics engine the other consoles will enjoy when Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is released. They get duel mode! DUEL MODE! LucasArts announced today that Krome Studios is developing a version of the game for the Nintendo console, and players will finally get to use the Wiimote for its intended purpose - as a lightsaber! With the Wiimote saber and the nunchuk controlling force powers, I'll be hard pressed to choose which console to pick the game up for. Adding to my inner turmoil is the aforementioned duel mode, which lets you take your friends in one on one Jedi battles to the death! I am so completely geeking out right now it isn't funny. You guys read the press release, I'm going to need a moment.
LucasArts to Unleash the Force on the Wii in Spring 2008Star Wars™: The Force Unleashed™ Coming to Nintendo's Platform with Exclusive Duel Mode
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Sept. 18, 2007 - LucasArts today revealed that Star Wars™: The Force Unleashed™ will come to the Wii™ home videogame system from Nintendo next spring, offering owners the unique chance to live out their Jedi fantasies by wielding the Wii Remote™ as a lightsaber while using the Nunchuk™ controller to torment foes with their Force™ powers.
The Force Unleashed casts players as Darth Vader's "Secret Apprentice" and promises to unveil new revelations about the Star Wars galaxy. The game's expansive story is set during the largely unexplored era between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. In it, players will assist the iconic villain in his quest to rid the universe of Jedi - and face decisions that could change the course of their destiny.
The Wii version, in development by Krome Studios, will also add an exclusive duel mode in which players can compete head-to-head with their friends to determine the ultimate Jedi Master.
"The Wii is a great platform for The Force Unleashed, because the console's motion-oriented controllers really bring the game to life," said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts. "We've worked hard to make the Wii version of the game unique in order to truly let you unleash the Force."

Welp, they just earned my $50.
I can tell Fahey is one of those people who fancies himself a Star Wars fan lol, noob.
Nice, but I still want Tie Fighter 2...
oh.my.god. this cannot come out soon enough.
omg i'm actually going to buy a wii now...
will there be a dual duel mode? as in dual wielding light sabers with two wii remotes? or even some way to use darth mauls saber?
No 1:1? It'll fail without it.
Hello third party Wii Killer App.
-WPack911
@Whoaness: Agreed. The fun that people will see in this just won't be there if it's gesture based.
As cool as it sounds, I always found using the wiimote as a sword while holding onto the nunchuk to be a bit unwieldy. The cord between the two is a tad too short, and to get a real feel for a lightsaber battle, you want to hold the grip with two hands.
What would be awesome was if it was Wiimote = saber and power glove = force powers. Now that right there would be sweet.
ps3 & 360 multiplayer > duel mode.
if they can escalate from the type of multiplayer in Jedi Academy you got a real winner.
This actually kinda sucks because I'll have hard time choosing what version to buy. Prettier graphics or fancy controls? Then again, from my experience, LucasArts always fucks up Star Wars games with bad bland looking graphics so maybe the choice won't be that hard after all.
Using the Wiimote to simulate saber combat is just insulting. I can't wait to see how many wiimotes and televisions get broken by assholes trying to be an Form IV hero. Good luck simulating anything btw with that nunchuck attached btw.
@Whoaness:
I don't think 1:1 is possible, but good developing will get close enough to be fun and playable. Hopefully that will be the case in this, um, case.
@DashTheHand: That would be so bad...
Thank you for the awesome. This mayhap be the reason weed was cultivated in the first place.
Am I the only one who dosn't care at all. in all honesty this game looks like a snore fest and will most be mini games :)
Fahey, would you say you're in..."duel shock"?
(sorry, had to say it.)
But seriously? This is like the awesomest news ever. Now I have the same problem as everyone else - fancy graphics, or Wii lightsaber? The choice, it's so hard...
@Deadeyereborn: It will definitely not be mini games. Whether it will be good or not, remains to be seen.
That picture is made of win and awesome.
Time for a wii??? I think so!
@Gumbydunzeeto: You do realize he was joking right?
Does anyone else have issue with Wiimote lag? On a 16:9 television, the on screen motion sensing is slow to keep up with the actual wand movement (no matter how fast or slow the movement).
Oddly enough, on my 4:3 TV, the motion sensing is spot on.
The Wii will obviously not be able to handle the physics and graphics engine so i expect a numbed down version and the last thing Wii owners need is more numbed down and low quality games. Won't be worth the money if thats the case. If you watched the developer videos, the physics engine is a huge part of the game too and something that im definetly looking forward to. The Duel thing is just going to be the same as swinging your wii-mote like in Red-Steel and Zelda and the novelty will wear off. And Shirorx is right too; the multiplayer for the PS3 and 360 version is going to be way better then some fancy controls.
@sandwhiches: Nope. My TV's native resolution is 720 and it's spot on for me (even the Wii Sports baseball is perfectly timed). Do you have lag on any other systems using the same type of cables? If so, it sounds like your TV is a little slow in upscaling the 480i or 480p (depending on you cables) to it's native resolution.
WOO HOO!!!
@sandwhiches: Did you remember to change the setting in the Wii to widescreen? Any difference in connection (composit/component)? You may need to adjust the sensitivity between televisions too, since... well, it's an entirely different screen ratio and all...
@jaredgood1: The cables are the Nintendo-branded composites. However, I have my TV set for 1080p... I guess that could be the issue.
Oh crap...Somebody better warn YouTube.
@sandwhiches: If you have another system, try running it with composite cables as well. If that system lags too, then it's an upscaling issue.
@Mansteak: The Wii is set for widescreen. I remember reading a while ago how some 720/1080 TVs can have problems translating information quickly enough from game systems-to-the screen.
@jaredgood1: Will do. Thanks!
@sandwhiches: The source of the content determines its resolution I believe. My Directv hd box and ps3 both determine their own settings and the tv goes with it.
I was hoping for a wii exclusive game. Hopefully the control makes this the definitive version so that Lucasarts can justify giving Wii a dedicated team.
@doubtful: 1:1 is definitely possible. It just takes careful collison detection. I actually EXPECT LucasArts to make it 1:1, and if they don't it will be a travesty. After the first dev pulls off successful 1:1 controls on the Wii, it'll become the norm and we can all rest easy.
Fine. Aaaaahhhhhh. Leeeeeeeeey.
1:1 is a terrible idea here. Make it wrist to arm, like ping-pong is to tennis and it will work much better. I doubt that the average Wii-user has the same precision and dexterity expected of a Jedi master.
@DashTheHand:Yes... yes.
Someone needs to make a Wii app where a Wiimote is used in both hands. For this title I'm thinking dual saber style fighting but there must be sooooo many applications for an control config like this. Plus, using the soon to be released sensor board in conjunction with a Wiimote/chuck or dual Wiimote config would also be cool.
How about a skiing game. Two Wiimotes could be used for ski poles and a sensor board for turning. IMAGINE what people would look like playing that! ROTFLOL
god I love post latency.
You know, if you could actually manipulate the lightsaber in the gamespace, if it would actually mimic your hand movements, this would be unbelievable. But given the Wii's track record, expect rabid, inarticulate flailing for all.
@SAKY: Me
@SAKY: too.
Ok, Fahey, breath, breath, breath. Concentrate on breathing in, then slowly breathing out. You'll feel better in a minute. The rest of you, start packing all the knicknacks away in boxes and nail plywood over the windows. Fahey's gonna kill him some Jedi right here in this very room! (His mom's going to kill him if we don't Wii-proof the room, so be nice.)
Am I the only one really not that excited about this? I saw something similar in the nearby Dave and Busters called Mazan: Flash Of The Blade which you can see here:
[www.arcadeflyers.com]
[www.youtube.com]
My husband, myself, and the friends we were with (one of which who fences as a hobby) tried this and all came away rather disappointed. With no kind of real decent feedback (and no the vibration does not count) you are going to wind up just like the guy in the video; waving your remote wildly hoping to pull of some kind of combo move.
Myself, unless someone gives a copy to us I think we'll be sticking with something that will be fun versus something that sounds good in theory but will stink in practice.
@SAKY: a sensor borad for turning...hm.... nope, don't think nintendo has anything like that up their sleeve.
seriously people, face it: the wii fit board is godly.
This is a no-brainer, swinging > pressing a button.
I just might have to buy both
This is the reason why Nintendo needed to truly make this system "next-gen" instead of a rehashed Gamecube with motion controls. Now I'll have to buy this game twice, once to enjoy its beauty and physics... and once to enjoy hacking around with my Wiimote for the thing it was born to do.
Rather it was built from the ground up original...we'll see. Here's to hope!
This will be really good, or really bad. One or the other.
@pjladyfox: I remember that one, and it was bad.
The key to this being a success is 'force feedback' (pun not intended)
How are you going to make sword fighting realistic with nothing to 'strike' opposite too
@pjladyfox:
Agreed 100%. My first thought was, wow, people must have never played Mazan.
This reminds me of the early days of the DS, when everyone said, "It will be perfect for RTS and FPS games!"
Of course it isn't, and there aren't any good ones as a consequence. I just don't think people are thinking through just how poorly this is probably going to work.
