Wii Demand Kneecaps Indie Wii Movement

Ian Bogost reports that the Wii's potential innovation is falling victim to its success.

Back in November Bogost reported that Nintendo was waiting until this January to start reviewing indie developer applications for Wii dev kits.

Now it looks like that's not happening either, because of the tremendous popularity of the console.

According to our contact, the Wii Independent Developer Program is "on hold" until the end of the month, because "the Wii publishers are taking all of the available inventory, and more." In other words, Nintendo doesn't have enough kits to cover the demand for all those crappy licensed games, let alone more original work. I've confirmed that others heard the same story at D.I.C.E. last week.

While Bogost and other developers like him are still interested in making games for the Wii, you can't help but wonder just how long their interest will remain. For a console meant to appeal to the masses, you sure need to be hardcore to get one, be you a developer or a gamer.
