Peter Dille Goes Beserk, Bites Microsoft In Face

Peter Dille, Sony's senior vice president of marketing for PlayStation, is angry. No, actually, he's furious. So much so he's about ready to punch on. And Microsoft, boy, are you gonna get it:

I don't want to be argumentative, but I take issue with Microsoft either having a long tail, or being profitable, because they've never done either. They've never made a dime in this business, number one, and number two, they've never had a tail. They've never been successful enough to have a tail! So the notion of a back half of the curve doesn't exist for them. They stopped the Xbox and I kind of feel for the guy that bought an Xbox the month before they said 'we're out of business, we're moving on.'
Them is most certainly fightin' words. But wait. He ain't done.
With the Xbox 360 you've got an inconsistent design, some have a hard drive, some don't, and none of them have Blu-Ray, and the HD-DVD will be out of business in a matter of months. Is this a 10 year product? And by the way, it doesn't even work. Do they want to be selling it for 10 years and refurbishing them all for 10 more years? I don't think that's a 10 year product. You could disagree with me, or they could disagree with me, but I'd put that up against the PS3 any day.
I'm pretty sure that's about the point the handlers burst into the room and hit him with the tranquilizer darts. Little drastic, yeah, but it had to be done. Any more hulking out and he wouldn't have just been a danger to Microsoft, he'd have been a danger to himself, and his loved ones.

  • Another Sony mentalist. Where do they find these people?

  • He is still 5000% correct, even if he is crazy

  • Plunkett, you find the most interesting stories and by interesting I mean, Meh.

  • Sony is so screwed.

    Sony lol.

  • So he's in charge of Sony's marketing, eh?

Suddenly the dead goat and toilet ads all make sense.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 09:09 AM on 07/13/07 *

    That picture is so fitting.

Gotta admit though, guy has more balls than proper business etiquette.

  • HD-DVD will be dead in a matter of months. You heard it here first.

  • Hahahahahaha. Go SONY!

Considering the issues with teh 360 he is right about it.

  • Someone popped a gasket.

"YOU'RE GONNA FAIL BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO BLU-RAYZ!"

  • Sadly, I'm afraid I agree with him. After all, Microsoft has never made money on the xBox or the 360. Plus, my original xBox broke 2 weeks after the warranty ran out and my 360 is currently being repaired (I hope) in McAllen, TX.

  • So what's he gonna do when the new Xbox comes out before 10 years and it pwns the PS3 at the same pricepoint?

"BUT WE'VE GOT MORE GAMES NOW".

  • I'm picturing he was foaming at the mouth during this interview.

  • eh...shut up!

And by the way: Make and bring out some games. (and a working online mode for every game...rumble would be pretty nice, too)

Sometimes I think, people's I.Q. lowers after they bought a ps3. Or work for Sony anyways.

    Strange...

  • Zing

  • Dille SMASH!!!

If he got fired for this (which he won't), I'd hope Sony would play the sad walking away music from the Hulk TV show as he left the building.

  • Image of RogueSquid RogueSquid at 09:12 AM on 07/13/07 *

*sigh* Sony just have to stop the damn bitching. Just... please, pretty please? Why take issue with them at all? Why not just concentrate on gettings more triple AAA titles into production and on the shelves? You have a good console, now just get on with the job of kicking your own asses before starting playground antics with your competitor. I swear the sooner Kotaku can get that 3-way group hug sorted between Harrison, Reggie and Moore the freakin better....

  • The 360 doesn't have Blu-Ray? Wtf man. It at least has UMD, right? RIGHT?

I hope it doesn't become obsolete in a matter of months though, because I've still gotta gets me one in November, when all the games I want start coming out.

  • intresting. i am surprised Nintendo wasnt brought up in this bitch fight.

  • Wait.... My 360 doesn't work?

    *rushes to entertainment center*

Huh. It still works. I guess he's wrong.

  • I very much doubt HD-DVD will be 'dead' in a few months. And the 360 does work, unless mine is just an exception. What a fucking pillock. People like him should be hung and quartered. Completely unneccassary, you don't see people from any other companis bad-mouthing thier competition.

  • Wow, 3 weeks of good news and all of a sudden sony is ready to start a pissing contest. While i agree with what hes saying, in general, i think sony is in no place to make these kind of broad statements. MS could drop prices far beyond the range of sony this year, but is too greedy to. Still its smart to watch your mouth when your in third place.

  • Holy crap, its Evil Otto in the flesh! Sorry... thought they were announcing a redux of Bezerk.

This is what happens when you get all these execs in one place. They start pounding their chests, getting all antagonistic until someone comes in and tells them to go sit in the corner and think about what they've done.

  • Lol, I like Sony, Nintendo, and MS (on the PC, and the 360 to an extent) but this pure player hating. I can understand where he is coming from since my 360 broke twice, but don't hate the player Pete, hate the game, then brush yourself off and get back in there and kick some ass. Put up, or shut up. At least he has the passion, passion is good, makes you hungry to win.

  • I've heard this some place else...

  • That's the danger of not preparing and getting angry - any valid points get washed away in heat of the moment jive. Still, love the commitment.

  • 10 Year product? Don't they already have plans for releasing the PS4? Not having Blu-Ray is a bad thing? I'd say the biggest failure for PS3 is the fact that it DOES have Blu-Ray built in. With Sony pimping their format, their price point is just way too high. If you ripped that stupid player out of the machine, Sony wouldn't have to drop to these horrible hate-mongering tactics.

  • I think he's just angry about the Kotaku and Arstechnia writeups. Like an abusive spouse that lashes out at everone. I guess he pretty much re-affirms that the PS2 never be cancelled since it's profitable.

  • Wow, hes angry, hehe. I agree with him on the issues but I think hes feeling a little bitter that M$ is actually saying they will be pulling profit for the next fiscal year is it? Hell I dunno. I also think hes a bit bitter that M$ may actually have a popular system on their hands for its lifetime. I do however, like the PS3's 10 year life plan.

  • "Inconsistent design," huh? Kind of like that PS3 that didn't have an HDMI port and a 20 gig hard drive... Oh, and that 60GB hard drive model that you're about to stop supporting after you just announce a price drop, thereby forcing customers to pay $600.

    Mr. Pot, meet Mr. Kettle!

I would also like to point out that I've owned a 360 since day one - never had a single problem with it. I have, however, had plenty of lockups with my launch day PS2 over the years...

  • Im pretty sure the 360 isn't a 10 year console anyways.

  • And to think we were hoping for group hugs not so long ago...

  • William Shatner?

  • i dont think he should be saying those things. I mean the PS3 isnt perfect so why bash the 360.

although after reading it again i sort of agree.
I dont want to sound like a sony fanboy, but some of his criticisms are pretty valid, or am i wrong?

  • While Sony and Microsoft fight... Nintendo quietly takes over the world

  • Image of huginn huginn at 09:19 AM on 07/13/07 *

@Witzbold: Actually business etiquette is looking more and more like sports etiquette. For the most part sane, but the crazies are getting more and more attention and beccoming more visible.

    Jim Crammer anyone?

    But yeah, that's ballz

  • I dont think this guy understands that the reason you buy a 360 is becouse its got a dozen+ of great fucking games. So what if it break every other year, so what if HD-DVD fails, you still bought a console that you actually will use.
Yes, if the 360 and Ps3 had the exact same game catalogue, then maybe I would also choose a ps3 due to its hardware superiority. Today, if I had to choose only one? No

In a few years, when the Ps3 (presumably) has a catalogue of exclusive games worth to mention, we can talk.

  • haha...pretty, pretty good. This guy's ready to throw down!

  • Reading Dille's comments made me think I had accidentally clicked on the PS3 board at Gamefaqs.

    First Reggie, then this guy?

  • ROFL, ROUND 1!!! DING, DING, DING!

In all fairness though, old Xbox was worth the money and still is worth to buy, infact, it is even better then the 360 so far :(

But he does have a point with the core system beeing bad and Elite, he also has a point with HD-DVD, it is dead within next few months. And he DEFINATLEY has a point with broken consoles.

Anyway, I cant wait for Round 2 from MS, like, "we got the games" and "smooth online experience" with "DVD is the format we all use" etc.

PS: He has pretty eyes, you can really see his soul :P

  • The man is nuts. Don't let him near your children!

  • I sense a flame war....lawl s0nay Gaystati0n Tree!

  • The grapes... they are sour

  • Here's what I have to say:

-Inconsistant? Coming from Sony? Where's that 20 GB version. Oh wait, it's gone. The 60? Going. Oh wait, that Emotion Engine that some versions have but others won't? That's consistancy? Yeah, okay. You keep feeling bad about that XBox owner, I'll feel bad for the guy who bought a PS3 a day before the price drop.

-Blu-Ray? Meh. I say that owning a PS3. I own precisely 0 BR-DVDs. Don't plan on buying any. Not for a long, long while. So both HD-DVD and BR-DVD can die a painful death as far as I'm concerned.

-Reliability. Yeah, you have a point. Can't argue there. Although I shudder to think what you'll complain about when Microsoft fixes the problem and 360's stop bricking.

In the end, you're supposed to be a professional. Act like one. This just comes off as sad and desperate, which makes your arguments that much easier to disect, and makes you look like a buffoon.

  • @ixalon: So true. Probably isn't going to happen now. Unless the group hug is just an excuse for Peter Moore to get close enough to strangle Peter Dille!

  • @Noun: Rumors say MS might release a stand alone BR player. UMD, is not dead by far man, but it aint a huge success either, but it is more succesfull then HD-DVD will ever be.

@Devilturnip: My third xbox works too.

  • The comments page is about to explode. It has started.

  • he makes a very good point about product life cycles (not so much the ten year part, so read on)

i mean the PS2 is still a viable system (from 2000) today and is even competing against a supposed next-gen console (the Wii) while Microsoft completely left the Xbox to die, and by the time the PS3 is affordable for everyone it will be above and beyond anything the 360 can do...

i would bet that Microsoft will try to release a new system at that time ala Dreamcast and completely fuck themselves over by their timing and quick alienation of 360 owners (much like they did to Xbox owners)

and screw everyone of you who thinks he shouldn't be saying this, i'm glad someone in the industry has the balls to stand up for their company without playing into some PC and PR bullshit train.

there should be no modesty when it comes to gaming

Peter Dille you are my hero!

  • Every interview this guys in he won't stop saying "a 10 year product". When he was grilled by fox about the ps3 price drop thats all he said.
Fox- "Why are you lowing the price?"
Peter Dille- "We have a ten year product goal."
    Fox- "Yes, but why?"
Peter Dille- "Because of our ten year product goal?"
Please go to youtube and find the interview.

  • @Hills: I'm pretty sure the PS3 isn't either. If they don't pull 50 million by 2011 they'll be scrambling to dump support for the PS3 and get people onto their new platform.

You can only do 10 years when you win the generation.

  • Ok, now it's interesting. *grabs popcorn*

  • Gee...I wonder how hard that is? Lets give it a try.

    I'll even use his base.

"I don't want to be argumentative, but I take issue with Sony either having decent online service, or being truthful to customers, because they've never done either. They've never made a decent game for the PS3, number one, and number two, they've never had 4D like they promised. So the notion of a back half of the curve doesn't exist for them. They stopped the PSP by making it and I kind of feel for the guy that bought an PSP.

    Oh and,

With the PS3 you've got an inconsistent graphics, and crappy games, some don't even have color, and none of them have decent online play, and the Blue-ray is a ridiculous cost to the average gamer. Do they they think people are going to spend that much on hardware thats not even being utilized? I don't think that's a 10 year product. You could disagree with me, or they could disagree with me, but I'd put that up against the 360 any day.

I'm Peter Dille, and I just shit my pants.

  • The more Sony rubbish their competition the more desperate they look. You don't see Peter Moore or Reggie Fils-Aime saying they feel sorry for Sony owners or questioning the system's reliability or choice of disc format.

Sony need to learn some humility and start making some good games rather than wasting time trashing their competitors. It pissed me off the last time they did this when they were busy lying about the "Emotion Engine" to put Sega and the Dreamcast out of business.

  • *clap*...*clap*...*clap*..*clap*.*clap**claps* *APPLAUSE*

  • Image of DigitalHero DigitalHero at 09:25 AM on 07/13/07 *

Is he mad because PS3 isn't performing well against the Wii, or does he just have high blood pressure?

  • @ Ubisoft_Angel:
    1) Games for PS3 are incoming, you did watch E3 right ?
    2) Rumble is also coming, with a revenge, Touchsense ftw !
    3) You just insulted everyone that bought a PS3 and you work for Ubisoft. What does that tell me of your IQ ?
    4) Stop doing BAD ports already !!

  • He makes some valid points. Microsoft's not doing as well as it pretends, Blu-Ray is beating HD-DVD. But a 10-year cycle is in no way an industry standard or something that people expect.

  • While he's right about MS not making money and repair issues...he's missing the freakin' point...Bill Gates doesn't give two sh*ts about this quarter's profit...and he doesn't care about the format war either...he cares about crushing the only obstacle in his way of sliding MS into everyone's entertainment center so that the day coming very soon when NO ONE has disc players and everyone stores their media on hard drives will suddenly find good ol' MS ready to rule entertainment provision like they rule software provision...and he knows that Sony needs the Playstation to make money NOW or they will die...Gates is spending a few billion in 2007 to makes hundreds of billions in 2017...there's your "10 year product" you poor doomed fool...

  • Microsoft has made it their mission to attack the Sony strategy, so I don't see anything wrong with what he's stated. All the comments above don't attack the message of the comments, but the delivery. If you can argue that his comments are false then we can have a real discussion.

    1) Microsoft dropped XBOX faster than they could announce it.

    2) Failure rates are high

    3) They've never reached the customer penetration to become profitable and they can't rely on software or backend profits.

  • Does anyone really want a console that isn't replaced for 10 years? Any current console will look extremely outdated in 10 years at the rate video cards are improving in PCs.
