Ground-Breaking Multiplayer Combat Soars onto PlayStation(R)3 (PS3(TM)) With the Arrival of Warhawk(TM)

Fast-paced, 32-player action ushers in industry first - critically acclaimed Warhawk available at retail on Blu-ray Disc(TM) and as download from PLAYSTATION(R)Network

FOSTER CITY, Calif., Aug. 28 /PRNewswire/ — Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA) announced today the North American release of the highly anticipated title Warhawk(TM), available exclusively for PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)). In Warhawk, players experience fast and dynamic multi-modal warfare, featuring white-knuckle aerial combat, armored vehicle assaults and frantic infantry combat in a massive war fought both in the skies and on the ground. In a first for the game industry, Warhawk is available to consumers both in retail stores on Blu-ray Disc(TM) (BD) and as a downloadable title via PLAYSTATION(R)Network.

An eagerly-awaited remake to the original PlayStation(R) hit of the same name, Warhawk was developed by Incognito Entertainment Inc., the acclaimed studio behind the Twisted Metal(R) franchise and cult-favorite War of the Monsters(TM). Warhawk is a multi-player only title, supporting up to 32 players battling at once for both online and offline play. Furthermore, Warhawk's QuickSplit technology allows up to four players to battle simultaneously on a single PS3 — either online or offline — with the press of a button. Featuring various multiplayer gameplay modes such as Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and a new Zone Mode designed specifically for Warhawk, players can engage in strategic team play or fend for themselves against a barrage of enemies from around the globe. Offering a full online feature set, players can also join teams or maintain clans within the Warhawk online community. Full stats, rankings, leaderboards, badges and other awards are supported and reward players for success on the battlefield. Players can also stay organized online with user-friendly communication tools.

"Warhawk's furious action-combat gameplay and brilliantly detailed landscapes demonstrate PS3's many capabilities," said Jeff Reese, director, software marketing, SCEA. "Players will move seamlessly from the fierce aerial dogfights to the heated armed assaults and vehicular attacks on the ground. Warhawk is an exhilarating addition to the PS3 line-up this fall."

Warhawk takes advantage of PS3's immense processing power in a variety of unique ways. For example, the Cell Broadband Engine(TM) — the digital heart of PS3 — provides the player an enhanced visual scope by rendering long viewing distances when in flight mode, resulting in a level of feature density unmatched in the genre. Furthermore, unlike the traditional server model, Warhawk allows players to use PS3s in their homes as global servers to host online games. This helps ensure that along with the SCEA servers, players can access consumer-hosted, community servers that are available to players around the world.

Adding to the thrill of piloting the most advanced fighter in the fleet, players can opt to use the SIXAXIS(TM) wireless controller's motion sensing technology to directly control their warhawk in flight, or "steer" their moving vehicle on land using the roll, pitch and yaw motion controls.

Warhawk is available for download directly from PLAYSTATION(R)Network for $39.99, and on BD through select retailers for $59.99. The retail version of Warhawk includes a Jabra Bluetooth(R) headset that comes in an exclusive piano black color and emphasizes the fun and strategic element of communication during gameplay. The BD version also includes bonus video content.

The independent Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rates Warhawk "T" for "Teen". For more information about the ESRB, visit http://www.esrb.org. For more information about Warhawk, visit

  • Downloading WOWhawk as i type this. I've been itching for this game ever since the beta ended. I can't wait!

  • Can't wait to play :o)

  • Wish I could play it...

  • Great, I really want this game. Im going to the store soon

  • I gotta wait for payday Friday :(

  • Have to wait till I get off work. this game was not on my radar till I got into the beta and was blown away by how fun it was. Getting the download, don't need headset and good to save some money during this busy game season.

  • This wednesday i will have my copy. wooot!! this better be 10x better than Shadowrun. Seems like it will to me anyways.

For me, the timing couldn't have been worse. If this were a launch game as intended, I'd own a copy already, but between Bioshock last week and Metroid Prime today, I'm all out of cash and time.

Since my play time is so limited by the constraints of daily life to begin with, I tend to give single player games precedence.

Looks like a lot of fun, though. Definitely on my holiday wish list.

  • I was very surprised at the speed of the download. I bought it from the PSN Store about 2 minutes after it went live and had it installed and running in about 25 minutes (I'm running on a 5Mb connection). I don't know how it is going now that the rest of the world is up and running, but it at least appears that Sony beefed up the bandwidth for this launch.

  • I really liked the original Warhawk, with one exception, basically no matter what you did you could not evade enemy fire, but it was really freaking fun to play. I remember playing that piramid stage demo like crazy, the actual game wasnt that long but the levels were fun, and the b movie cutscenes were hilarious. My favorite thing to do was go as high as the game would let you go (which was pretty damn high) then go dive bombing down. I almost wish I had a PS3 to give this one a whirl.

  • Gaaaaa. Metriod 3, Warhawk and Lair all in the same week. I'm going to be so poor...

Typing on my PS3 as I wait on the download. In Japan, but glad I kept my US bank card. Sorry to my fellow players in advance for using a crud headset. Nice bluetooth units are a bit expensive here.

  • I've been hearing really good things from the people who have already downloaded and started playing. One thing though that I've read is probably very important for people to know.

If you buy the PSN version of this game, the only account on your PS3 that will be able to play it is the account that purchased the game. If you share your PS3 with other family members or roommates, they will be unable to play Warhawk using their accounts and will need to either use yours or buy their own (although I'm not even sure buying another copy would work since there's already one installed).

So if this sounds like a pain in the ass for you, you'll probably want to go with the retail version. More info can be found at this NeoGAF forum: [www.neogaf.com]

  • Im going to the store to pick it up rite now. cant wait!

  • It took me around 40 minutes to dl it and install it. The speed wasn't as bad as I expected and the game was pure fun. I slept at 3.30 am last night and I'm struggling to stay awake now...

What's the word on how much space it takes up? The wife likes to fill my PS3 up with all sorts of music and pictures, and I have a lot of game videos, demos, and things of that nature clogging up the piddly 60GB.

I want to just get an external drive to hook up to it, but the wife is being a bit stingy with the upgrade money considering I am trying to buy a new laptop too. Go figure.

So... Anyone that can tell me how much space it eats up? Or should I just get the $60 version?

  • @PapaBear434:

    It's about 800 MBs (780 something)..

Not so bad if you have the 60GB version.

  • Image of PapaBear434 PapaBear434 at 09:07 AM on 08/28/07 *

    @Kra1oS:

Wow, really? Less than a gig? That's a lot of game for such a little download.

Ok, how much space does it take for installation?

  • That's one epic screen there.

  • Eh. I have to wait till Friday to pick up ANY of this week's releases. I may end up picking this up. I need a headset and since Warhawk comes with one I'll be set. But then again, Wild Arms 5 is my priority.

Screw it. I'll probably get both. This week has officially begun the money draining.

  • @PapaBear434:

Not really sure but I'm assuming somewhere around a gig.. give or take a few.

  • tomorrow i will have mine!

  • Image of doubtful doubtful at 09:15 AM on 08/28/07 *

    @PapaBear434:

I want to just get an external drive to hook up to it, but the wife is being a bit stingy with the upgrade money...

Better to ask forgiveness than permission. Buy it!

  • Can't wait til this hits the UK store on Thursday :D

  • Image of PapaBear434 PapaBear434 at 09:19 AM on 08/28/07 *

    @doubtful:

You haven't met my wife. She just got her black belt in Tong Soo Do last weekend, and her breaking demonstration was four one inch bricks with a hammer fist.

I do what she says, thank you very much.

    /cowers in the corner...

  • is anyone else slightly reminded of the overlooked classic Battl Engine Aquilla by Warhawk? I know it's not that similar but I definitely see sOME similarities between the two. If anything, the overall feel seems similar.

  • And... I can fully expect to find no one playing resistance online when I get home. Guess I'll have to pick this up *SIGH*

  • @PapaBear434:
I don't know if the sale is still going on, but I picked up a 320GB external drive for $88 at Target last week...

  • @PapaBear434: So, what you're saying is that you're not the papa bear in your house? ;)
I'm torn between buying and d/ling now... will a Bluetooth cell phone headset work?

  • So... what ever happened to all that red mercury?

  • So is this actually *in* stores today? Or just shipping today? I'm stuck at work & I don't want the office hearing me call 5 EBgames asking for Warhawk for the PS3, just after yelling about productivity :)

  • @PapaBear434: i believe it doesn't matter if you get the retail version. i read somewhere (hopefully someone can confirm this for me) that once you pop in the disc, it uses upto 800 mb of your harddrive for caching or something to that effect; for faster loading. if this is true, you might as well get that upgrade...after some slack from your wife of course.

  • @rentahero1:
Just any ol' headset will generally work. Actually, go to the PlayStation Underground, dig through the rabid fanboys who have to post a "TEH PS3 IS BETTER THAN XBOT!!!1" threads thirteen times daily, and...

Sorry, went off on a tangent about how I hates me some Underground.

Anyways, they have a thread on there about how different headset models work. The one I use is the same one I have for my cell... I'm halfway tempted to pick up the brick-and-mortar version because $60 for a Jabra headset and a free game isn't too bad.

  • @Killtacular: It's shipping today, stores aren't likely to get it till tomorrow or Thursday.

  • @EvilJ:

"$60 for a Jabra headset and a free game isn't too bad."

That's what I was thinking. I checked allot of retailer(online as well as B&M) and $60 is about the going price for that headset anyway. Definitely worth it IMO.

  • @Kyle81: Thanks. Hope Warhawk turns out to be decent. Oh well, worst case, I'll have a jabra for my phone.

  • Darn it, absolutely no stores in my area have this game. It's super annoying.

    -Jaime

  • Nothing special about the headset?

Bah. I figured they'd at least put a little warhawk sticker on it or something.

  • Is this in stores Tuesday or Wednesday?

They need to switch ALL games to Tuesdays, DVD style.

  • @EvilJ: Here's the thread you're looking for:
    [boardsus.playstation.com]

I'm IceBlue over there. I started that one because of the poor VOIP support for PS2 online, and I didn't want the same problem for PS3. I do hope it makes a difference because playing any team based games is bad with no mic support.

  • ahh i love playing ppl who weren't in beta, was getting 1 or 2 (team and/or overal) for 75% of my matches for the last 2 hours or so. Doesn't look like after game stats are working like they did in beta at the moment to

    PSN: Kxpuc
if anyone wants to friend me to play sometime

  • must....get home.... own some face...

  • @Someguy925: I was wondering that myself. I was really hoping that this would be a sequel in the truest sense of the word, complete with atrocious FMV cutscenes. But, the gameplay sounds good, so I guess I'll have to wait for the single-player expansion pack (hey, I can dream).

  • @crashlanding:
That was an EXCELLENT post. Seriously, I'm not a big fan of the Underground, but I remembered that from a few months ago as being a VERY informative and useful thread. Good work (no sarcasm)!

    @DrunkenTrom:
The ones I've seen are between $30 and $40... which, is still a steal if you consider the game is $40 online. I've pretty much used that to convince my wife that it's worth it (plus, I just saved us $120 on a TV last night, so shouldn't be too hard...)

  • @Kirbytheslayer: no one knnows yet as the box vesions aren't available yet.

I initially planned on getting the d/l but I'm resisting the urge and waiting for the hard copy since we have multiple player accounts.

  • Image of Toasticus Toasticus at 11:31 AM on 08/28/07 *

I've always liked that screenshot. It seems like something out of an anime.

Seeing as I've heard almost nothing but good things about Warhawk, I'll probably give it a shot when I pick up my PS3 eventually. I was wondering about a few things, though... will there be a demo or trial version? Also, does it support split-screen? If the latter is true I'll definitely pick it up; otherwise I'll need to at least try it first.

  • @Mr.Waffleton: I LOVED THAT GAME! BEA was one of the first games I bought on the day it was released, the level where you had to destroy either the rocket or the sub before the levels branched was my favourite. As for Warhawk, you Americans had better watch out! When I get this game on Thursday I will... Well, I'll probably get pwned by those who were in the beta and those who have had the game longer than me. Pricks. (Not jealous. Nope. Not at all. Certainly not me. Maybe that guy who's called PUnastheslayer-PSN, he might be jealous)

  • @Toasticus: It supports up to four players on split screen. You can take your guests online to play and the split screening is dynamic so players can join and leave the game at any point. No word on demo yet.

@afmvdp: Well supposedly some EBgames have got the game in today according to a few folks on other forums, but that is likely to be isolated stores and most probably wont have it till tomorrow or Thursday.

  • The download is 798MB in case people wanted to know.

  • Dammit!

I have approval to pick this up and it's not in stores?

  • STILL debatin whether or not i should get this... gettin MP3 and Bioshock today... also Lair and Heavenly in the next few weeks... should i get this?? hmmm

  • How bout Europe release? Do we have to wait six month for it to get that lame ass french and german localization or have they finally realised that we dun need that and just have an english release?
